Game of Thrones - HBO part 2 - Part 2

I have not tried to turn this into anything personal, anymore than it already is and was when I entered the conversation. It is not a dismissal, nor an insult, in stating that your writing about it comes off as close, rather than distant - attached, rather than detached. And that emotional energy feels negative and with its own agenda, though I do admit that is my subjective interpretation.

But being that I'm apparently making this personal, or have otherwise just become a "fan [who] takes it so personally to have something they love analyzed or critiqued," evidently, from that addition, I think this is over with. Not to mention, it's been in the wrong thread anyway.

Regardless, the exception was with the (your) usage of language. Shakespeare also makes for a poor comparison, in both ways the comparison can be taken, but that's another matter.

And thank you, Genesis 1.0. Your words are appreciated.

All the death and grief actually enhances the series in my opinion, yeah the characters often get either (A) betrayed (B) grievously injured or (C) down right murdered and yeah it'll get worse and more good people will die before it's over. That said, with all that grief makes every victory, however small, all the more meaningful. Daenarys with her Dragons is the perfect example of that. These are the moments that make this series truly shine.

This is my observation of the Game of Thrones thread. Certain posters (I am not singling out Bastardo or anyone else) have a tendency to get very defensive when people criticize the source material in even the slightest way. It happened last week when I said the pace was too slow and that the television writers should take more creative liberties. It seems to have happened when Crowe implied that the later parts of the series will need changed. And I've seen it happen in other parts of this thread. Certain posters take a very condescending tone the second that anyone questions GRRM's writing and it drives the whole thread into the ground.

THIS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OPINIONS!

We can have discussions without taking criticisms of an author personally. We can have discussions without taking criticisms of a television show personally. I will not hesitate to close this thread down and ban discussion of this show from the Hype if need be. It nearly came to that a couple times in the Glee thread when certain posters took criticisms of certain characters personally. It did not stand there. It will not stand here. This is a place for safe, fun discusson where everyone can express opinions without being talked down to. Please do not ruin this thread for everyone by feeling the need to take criticisms of a TV show personally.

At any rate, I hope that everyone is having a nice holiday (or a pleasant Sunday for those who do not celebrate this holiday) and enjoys tonight's episode (assuming you did not already watch it. :hehe:).

Great episode coming tonight. Hope everyone enjoys it.:)

One hour to go for me. I really hope this episode isn't as wordy as the first one. I love the complexities of the story, but damn, the first ep. about killed me. I felt that if I missed one minute of dialogue I would be screwed.

It was wordy, but I actually like lots of dialogue. I love the intrigue of the show

Yea I do to, I just hope I get a pee break this time. :)

Tonight's episode was great. The scene with Theon and his sister made me cringe. And I can already tell Salladhor Saan is going to steal all of his scenes.

Liked the scenes with Arya and Gendry, the Greyjoy scenes were good [blackout]but I don't like them because of what will happen[/blackout], I like that they changed up [blackout]how we learn about what Craster does with his son. Gives Jon more to do.[/blackout] Tyrion was great.

However, I really hate [blackout]what they're doing with Stannis. Guess they need an excuse for more sex[/blackout]

^ I think we'll see the result of that scene at Storms End.

Makes me cringe when I read that scene, too. On a similar note, glad they made her look rough - wasn't paying attention to the casting of Asha/whatever her name is here. (Don't care they changed it, just don't remember what it was.) And on another similar note, I'm glad they nailed the ***** on the boat as fugly.

They've done a great job, in a single episode, of pairing Arya with Gendry, giving Yoren an awesome shining moment, and introducing Jaqen in a notable manner. Very good job condensing stuff there by the writing and directing team.

As for Stannis -
I don't know if I approve or disapprove, but I assume it's to give viewers a physical means to wrap their heads around the shadow assassin babies Mel ****s out.
(Ha, conan69 beat me there while I was typing this out.)

I'm honestly going to need a roster and a map for the rest of the season. For about 60% of tonight's episode I had no clue who people were, where we were, or what the hell was going on.

Stannis is really growing on me. I'm gonna say, next to Tyrion, he's my favorite character right now.

SuperT,
More new characters on the way.

Bastard,
The book does mention Stannis men commenting on how Stannis and Mel sharing a tent. I think, like the Renly/Loras thing, they just took a liberty, and yes, made it a easy way for people to understand what happens, prob in episode 5,for this seasons first "big moment", that I dont want to give away.

Great episode tonight.

"I'm not questioning your honor Lord Janos. I'm denying it's existence."

Tyrion FTW.

They did do a good job of condensing a lot of Arya's chapters. [blackout]I just hope they don't forget to reference Nymeria[/blackout]

It's magic. That's enough of an explanation for me. One of the reasons I liked Stannis so much was he was so different from his brothers. He was almost Ned without compassion (assuming Jon isn't Ned's son). I can live with changing his appearance but having him screw Melisandre ruins a good amount of what I liked about the character.

I just hope they keep his zinger to Renly.

Tyrion was on fire with his zingers tonight.

Anyone else notice that they showed Winterfell in the opening credits, yet they never went there in the episode? Something I picked up on when I rewatched the first season was that every location visited in an episode is shown in that episode's opening credits.

Two great episodes in a row. No Robb though:(

Yeah, I've always liked Stannis.

I don't disagree. But assuming it doesn't change much characterization in the long run, I'm not going to condemn it.

I posted this a few days ago in spoilers, but now that the episode's aired here were my thoughts:

That was really good. After, the crackerjack editing pace, it's nice to have a more gingerly pace. By choosing to focus on a few stories (Tyrion, Arya, Jon, Davos/Stannis and Theon) they were able to move those more along. I imagine Tyrion will be in every episode this season due to his importance. Dany may be just because she brings in the ratings (like her 1-minute cameo this week :hehe: ), but everyone else may alternate. We may see a brief bit of Jon next week given the cliffhanger and maybe Arya, but I suspect there will be no trace of Stannis or Robb and instead we may finally be (re)introduced to Renly and perhaps Amory.

This is the first time I really have seen the show cover stuff I already read, as I watched S1 before I read the books. So, I'm kind of thrown by how quickly they'll condense stuff. It works, mostly like with Gendry finding out about Arya's past right off the bat ([blackout]though I hope that doesn't mean her escape with him Hot Pies and the other one who dies isn't cut[/blackout]). But I felt like we didn't see enough of the surprisingly cold welcome Theon got. It also hurts Stannis a bit for me, because we haven't really see him as a strong man of honor/leader. Thus far, we've seen him renounce his religion with impatience and now break his wedding vows after a minute's pestering. I feel we need to know Stannis more as the man of brittle iron before we see that iron breaking.

Anyway, these were just thoughts. It was great to see Yoren kicking ass, Asha make Theon the idiot and most of all Tyrion just owning King's Landing. And letting Jon actually see what the wildling does to his sons instead of just being told by Gilly? A great bit of adapting it for the screen.

Really? I thought [blackout]that it is heavily implied that Melissandre spends too much "alone time" with Stannis. That's why he sends her away before Blackwater to show his men that he is not whipped. But between her "giving birth" to those shadow monsters and her own admissions to knowing Stannis intimately to Davos in ASOS, I kind of just assumed they were getting it on. Kind of like the implications with Renly and Loras.[/blackout]

I'd be interested to hear your own theories about the subject, as you clearly didn't like how the show handled it this episode.
