It is fanboy rage.
The changes are made to distinguish ARROW as it's own thing and seperate from anything that came before.
We knew this from the get-go. This is a real-world re-imaginging of the comics character.
In fact, if this concept is good.. I hope the comics change and adapt to reflect this show. The New 52 GA sucks.
No, it really isn't. And it's really not separating itself from anything, if it's essentially Green Arrow Year one mixed with Iron Man. Besides, I never complained about the way it seems to be handled so far. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by a lot of it. Especially, I'm glad they're bringing in the internal monologue. That's something from the comics that a lot of adaptations throw away.
All I've said is there's no logical reason to change his name in the series from Green Arrow to Arrow. I don't mind the title change, and if this was fanboy rage, I'd swear off the series altogether(which I'm not going to do, in fact, I'll probably end up at the pilot screening in SDCC). Thing is, it would probably even behoove them to keep the name Green Arrow. Because A. it sounds more like a superhero, and that's obviously big now, and B. Smallville fans will most likely jump onboard to see the character's return.

. Because he is a badass now.
