Hans Zimmer Scoring The Man of Steel - Part 2

Personally I think noone should have been hired to score MoS.....the John Williams score is the end all-be all of Superman scores. It should be the standard for anything Superman related.

Believe me, I don't think anyone was more disappointed than I was to hear that Williams' music wouldn't be in this movie. I'm in my 30's and grew up with Reeve as my hero, and whenever I'd imagine him, I always heard the classic theme in my head.

But I've come to realize that this is a new Superman - the Superman of 2013, not 1978.... and he needs new music. I saw a youtube video of MOS footage with Williams' music played over it and it totally does not work.

I think the important thing about the music is that it feels like the Superman it represents, and Zimmer's score does that amazingly well.

There seems to be this paradigm floating around with some fans that Superman music can only be good if it has an iconic, catchy, pop-culture-friendly theme to it. And there's nothing wrong if you insist on having that mindset, it's totally your right to do so.

But I'd recommend keeping your mind open, because Zimmer has a lot of awesome music for this new Superman...I'm just sayin!

I hear that. What I'd really like is for comic book films to start having great themes again. I can't remember the last one that actually did. Most scores sound cheap, generic, or are otherwise completely forgettable. Williams' score added so much to the Reeves' Superman.

I love Williams' score and it will always be the definitive Superman theme for me. Much like Elfman's score for Batman.

That being said I enjoy the crap out of Zimmer's work on Batman and so far for Superman.

What I don't get is - yes, I still get goosebumps when I hear Williams score - but why in the blue hell do people not want new things? It's not like Williams score is erased from existance.

We have 2 awesome Batman styles (and one crappy one - damn you Elliot Goldenwhatever) and now we're gonna have 2 awesome Superman themes!

Why wouldn't we want this?

Hell - even Iron Man has 3 different themes - one from each film in the same franchise lol.

It's just a sign of the times. We don't have 3 minute opening credit rolls nowadays where it's just the music by itself. Today all the music is on-screen with action 99.9% of the time.

I can still recognize the new Star Trek, Batman, Inception, Avengers, etc themes easily though - so I wouldn't call them forgettable.

I'm surprised this hasn't leaked today, I was almost certain we would have this online.

Meh, Zimmer can do what he wants, and he's smart not to attempt to replicate a traditional superman theme just like he was smart not to replicate or compete with Elfman's Batman theme. He went for ambiance, and mood...something that would fit and work perfectly with the images on screen, and it was a rousing success. I can't see Williams theme working at all with MoS and if i recall it was Singer's reliance on Donner's work that contributed to SR being such a letdown to the general public. People can't cherry pick...if Snyder/Nolan were going to go all out with the fresh approach, I'm glad they made the bold decision to scrap the most iconic element of cinematic superman (that is Williams score)

I totally agree. We have 2 awesome versions of Superman (and one that needs to go to therapy for his stalking problem). It's not like you're betraying the old one if you open up your mind a little and see what's cool about the new one.

It's like cars.....I like Jeep AND Subaru because they're both awesome cars, neither one can replace the other!

John Williams' score wouldn't fit in this version of Superman at all. It's epic but I don't think it's as emotional and varied as Zimmer's. There's just something exotic about Zimmer's that fits right in. I think the old score would stick out like a sore thumb. Thank God they moved on.

People need to move on.

Agreed. Marvel really needs to improve in the music department...to me, the Avengers theme is just "kinda cool", but nowhere near the emotional impact of Zimmer's Batman and Superman music, not to mention John Williams and Danny Elfman. Same with Spider-man, both old and new...just kinda "I guess we can go with that" but nothing really great. And when I think of Iron Man, my mind totally draws a blank as far as music....does he even have any? Lol

I agree it was time to move on. However to say Williams' prices wer not emotional and varied is simply untrue. The brilliance in Williams work is that he was able to weave a theme into all prices and convey the same overarching message while going into individual direction as far as emotions and variances are concerned. His work was like a tree. The many different branches came from the same trunk.

I have been wary of Zimmers approach, and although with reservations, I have come to the conclusion that this film does not need a catchy score or a timeless epic piece. It is a new superman for a new age. And Zimmer's score compliments the film (I hope).

Brian Tyler's work on IM3 is really the only significant stride they have made in making an actual score for their films. Other than that...nope.

I didn't say it wasn't emotional or varied. I said Hans' stuff feels MORE emotional and varied, to my ears anyway.

I disagree. If I watch any of the MoS trailers or TV spots with the sound off and the John Williams theme blasting, it's a perfect fit.

It really isn't but sure whatever floats your boat.

^ No, it's too upbeat and lighthearted. This is warm and inspiring, but more slow and dramatic. This isn't a knock on the Williams theme, as it's the best superhero theme. Just that it wouldn't work here.

Yeah the William's theme doesn't fit at all in the trailer. The Zimmer music fits perfectly (and they cut it to the beats).

Does the theme still work when you turn the video off, too? I bet it does. ;)

You can say the same for all new age Superhero films, not just Marvel. Nothing post century has matched Williams' Superman score or Elfman's Batman score, not even Elfman's own work in Spider-man.

It would be appropriate to say Superhero movies in general need to step their music up, like they stepped up their screenplays.

I say Elfman's Spider-Man music is within the same ballpark of his Batman theme. Though it's probably too complicated for many to enjoy at the same level. But yes, music in movies tends to be more cookie-cutter than I want to admit.

I'll take Zimmer's Batman work over Elfman's.

Yeah, I agree. I'm a fan of Elfman's Spider-Man work. I even enjoyed James Horner's ASM score, just not as much as Elfman's.

His Hulk score wasn't bad, though not great either.
