Gosh you guys are so knowledgeable about this stuff. I've learned a lot by reading your posts.

I honestly know nothing about bodybuilding or fitness. All I know is that Cavill physically looked like Superman onscreen. That was enough for me.

Maooz, stop it!! :argh: the last thing I need is for Spidey to get riled up. Again.

:hehe:

The new photos of Cavill with the short hair are making me wonder - do people think he should have shorter hair in the sequel to make him look older and more mature? The implication being he is an older, more experienced Superman. Or does that limit their options for visually distinguishing Superman DP Clark too much. If they keep his hair the same length it was in MOS, they could style it "bigger and wilder" as Clark Kent, kinda like they did with teenage Clark (I know his hair was a different length for that scene) and make his face/head shape look relatively different than it does as Superman with the tightly slicked back hair.

I swear, Maooz, by Rao, I will end you :argh:

Fixed that for you. This is the Man of Steel board afterall. :oldrazz:

Hey!! MOS Board or no, I swear by Manwë, Varda, Ulmo, Aulë, Yavanna, Námo, Nienna, Irmo, Estë, Vairë, Oromë, Tulkas, Nessa and Vána dammit! (Melkor is no longer accounted among the Valar, nor is Sauron, his servant, who was of the Maiar of Aulë) :argh:

Dude is so freaking wide. Gotta admit, despite the slight fit problems, I think I prefer Cavill in those Tom Ford suits he was wearing throughout last year and at the New York of MOS. The lower button stance and strong, wide peak lapels really complimented his physique. This suit doesn't look quite as good.

Excellent posts, completely agreed. That is exactly what I was getting at. Physiques and bodybuilding are all about illusions. The where and the appearance of the muscle is often as important as how much of it there is. Cavill's crazy combination of small bone structure (see how slim his joints like his wrists are) and wide frame is freakish awesome and the perfect raw material for a great physique.

Based on the strength gains that Mark Twight published and his anecdotes about how hard Cavill worked in the gym, Cavill deserves a lot of credit for how his physique turned out in terms of work ethic and determination. However, I think you need to mainly acknowledge Mark Twight and GymJones for how Cavill looks. He is the one who designed the program to bring out Cavill's genetic potential and used his vast knowledge to keep him on track through tough workouts and guard against injury. Also, as you mentioned Cavill and the Spartans in 300 are perhaps the two of most noteworthy physique to catch the public's attention. I think it must be remembered that the common element between them was not really Snyder, but Mark Twight who was hired by Snyder to make it happen both times. Dude deserves mad credit. :woot:

Yeah, I can definitely see the leg mass being part of it, but I think it is equally what slumkat and I are discussing. However, your points about leg mass bring me to another thing about Cavill's physique that makes him look so Superman-ish. He has a relatively short torso and longer legs (part of why they look slimmer and are harder to build as you mentioned). The longer legs make him look taller while his shorter torso exaggerates V-shape silhouette of his upper body. Perfect for making Superman look thick and wide while also tall and not stocky (as Bale was criticized for being in Begins).
I think even Snyder deserves some credit for how he has portrayed the male physique in his movies. He recently said that he wanted to create male fitness icons and you can see that he understands body-building himself and practices it himself.

He was responsible for creating the look of the Spartans in 300, he got rid of their armor and decided to have them in six packs and it looked awesome and revolutionary and the audience took notice. I think we can credit that film for making bringing out the "six pack" out of the body building circles and into popular culture in a big way. That film did as much for body-building as Pumping Iron must have done in its day. I myself joined the gym after that movie and a lot of my buddies.

Some say that the movie was body fascist but Snyder showed the greatness and awe that the male form could reach and he forced the audience to see it by showing the Spartans in their speedos and emphasizing their physical superiority in every single shot. He wasn't trying to intimidate the audience or stare down the men in the audience or make them feel bad, he was actually inspiring them to aspire.

Ditto with Watchmen where Dr. Manhattan is supposed to have the best physique in the world and he went to Greg Plitt for that.

And now again with Man Of Steel, he insisted that Cavill have a shirtless scene to show the audience how great Superman's physique could be. But then you also realize that its a real actor who had to really work out to achieve that physique and you are again inspired.

I think Snyder and Gym Jones have contributed to our notions of fitness in a great and inspiring way.

Why mention Sauron? As a Maia, he was never counted among the Valar. The Maiar were a different type of Ainur, distinct from the Valar.

:awesome: :applaud

I included Sauron for those who only know about LOTR, as opposed to the whole of Tolkien's legendarium

As for the whole bale/cavill physique conversation as amazing as cavill's transformation was i will always have to give it up to bale for where he started his transformation from to where he got to. To put things into perspective,

This is roughly where cavill was coming from prior to MOS

This is where bale was:

Bale going from that to Begins form in about 6 months is arguably the most impressive physical transformation in cinema history.

That's why i always put bale in his own category when it comes to physical devotion to a role.

My body type is actually quite similar (wide frame and smaller bone structure), but unlike HC, I had a very fast metabolism growing up, so it was difficult for me to increase my mass until I reached a certain age. My current metabolic rate is pretty much where I want it to be though, but I don't take as much advantage of the fact as I should, working out only a little here and there. Now, if I had a trainer like Mark Twight, I'd be off to the races! :yay:
