Henry Cavill completely rose to the plate in my opinion. I think it would have been awesome if he go to play more Clark Kent at the planet. The whole movie was mostly Superman. But I think he communicated a modern Superman extremely well.
I have a feeling the sequel is what everyone wants. It will have Superman's alter ego, drama, love, saving regular people, actions, and a badass in lex luthor plus metallo.
Agreed on all counts, though I'm still not totally sold on Metallo as the "physical" villain supplementing Lex. That is slowly changing though. Initially I thought Brainiac was more than overdue on film, but the more I think about it, the more I feel that would both far overshadow Lex and all the other interesting plot elements kalhawj mentioned - as well as seeming too similar to the first movie's "alien invasion" theme.
I think everyone is really chomping at the bit to see Daily Planet Clark. In that regard, MOS pulled off the "origin story" reboot perfectly, where by the end all the elements are lined up for the traditional character we know and love (à la Batman Begins, Star Trek and, uh, Ridley Scott's Robin Hood).
It's funny, because that was my biggest question going into the movie: "How are they going to pull off Daily Planet Clark?" Despite what I'd heard, I was still worried they might do something a little too far from the traditional mythos for my liking. So when I saw everything line up at the end and Clark, wearing glasses, take his job at the Planet - and those perfect lines that end the movie - well, I was on cloud nine when I left the theatre after my first viewing.
At the same time, we only got a small hint of how Henry would play Metropolis Clark, and that was really at the heart of my question. I have a feeling when MOS 2 (knock on wood) comes out, we'll get something halfway between George Reeves and - ironically - Brandon Routh.
