Turning Superman into a campy romantic comedy was weak. Undoubtedly you could draw in new fans of that type of entertainment if you do the same with any character, even Batman, but that doesn't mean it's doing justice to the character at all. It was a misstep.
Check out "Look Up in the Sky: The Amazing Story of Superman." The marriage in the comics was the direct result of DC wanting to draw in women readers. It led to a huge split at DC on the issue.
Only recently did DC come forth and admit that it was a mistake. Not surprisingly the marriage is gone in New52.
