I do think Nolan's sound is exactly as he wants it.

Yes. Presumably, Nolan is trying to elicit an emotional/visceral response from the high sound levels - even at the expense of clearly making out the dialogue in a given scene. Now... we can question whether this actually works as a creative or artistic technique; but it seems clear that it’s intentional (i.e., it’s not an amateurish mistake in the sound mixing :word:).
 
Interstellar is absolutely killing it overseas. There have been several instances of the film increasing from it's previous week in some markets like Korea and China. WOM is definitely strong. Great hold in it's second weekend domestically.
 
Definitely an impressive hold domestically too. It should easily be on track for $500 million at least.
 
Here in the U.S its still doing good but its steadily going to drop. I thought it was #1 last weekend but Big Hero Six took it. This got beat by Dumb & Dumber to which surprised me. And I don't see it regaining any momentum since Hunger Games Mocking Jay comes out this coming weekend, then Horrible Bosses 2 that Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I liked the movie, but it isn't a movie I am dying to see again.
 
First one was a disappointment to me. I thought it was gonna be one of the great modern comedies. So much potential.
 
Probably already mentioned, but I love how CASE was voiced by Josh Stewart, who played Barsad in TDKR.

Which is sad, because the sound mix is terrible. I say this as someone who has a formal degree in sound engineering, and worked for a while in a professional studio.

It's sad because this just shows that Nolan is someone that won't let people do their job, and is delving into a territory that he has no expertise in. You can invoke an emotional response without having a crap sound mix.

I gave the movie a 9.5/10, and if the sound mix weren't so amateurish it would have been a 10/10.

It's not about clarity, it's about each track having it's own space to breath in the mix. When you have clashing frequencies as what was presented what you get is mud.

I had a feeling he would feel this way after TDKR came out and it was a crappy sound mix. What's funny is all of his other films, have a tremendous sound mix. It doesn't seem like Nolan takes constructive criticism very well.

I think since TDK, his mixing has been getting progressively worse. I feel like more people are starting to catch on to it. Before TDK, I never had a problem with it.

Sound mixing in blockbusters is getting progressively worse in general, particularly in movies with UltraAVX sound or in IMAX. There's always a point where I find myself going, "What did he/she say? Shouldn't we be able to hear this??"

Nolan does listen to criticism, he set the humour rating for TARS to 65%.

On a more serious note, he seems to be taking criticism a little too hard nowadays. He needs to grow some thicker skin, because, if he lets it, it's going to effect his films moving forward.
 
I don't know how Nolan let some of Bane's dialogue get into the final version of the movie. He's almost completely unintelligible at points in the pit scene with Bruce, which is a shame as I like some of the dialogue ("shipwrecked men turning to seawater through uncontrollable thirst").

Bane was a combination of A) Nolan letting Hardy go hog-wild with his eccentric voice choices (basing Bane's voice on an Irish gypsy boxer?), B) for some reason adding heavy electronic distortion on top of the wack-ass voice Hardy was already laying on thick, and B) bad sound mixing and poor ADR.

The audience shouldn't have to struggle to understand a verbose villain who talks a lot.
 
I hate to say it, but... Interstellar is the first of Nolan's films about which I can honestly say I have zero desire to ever see it again.
