Seriously. Growing up it always fell on Easter weekend for me, except a few times in college.

same.

Good reviews would do wonders imo. But you never do know.

I agree. But I kinda wonder how many critics/reviews will be able to go in with an open mind?

I think it can open decently. Well above the current projections. I just don't think it will have any legs without strong reviews. I wonder how much nostalgia this movie will have considering it just doesn't look anything like Power Rangers.

I think it can do Kong levels. But the barometer is really hard to read on this movie. Like a know a bunch of people who aren't huge power rangers junkies who are pumped for it because of nostalgia. Then I've talked to people who are upset because Tommy isn't in it....

Maybe I should go see it twice to help....I did see Godzilla 2014 twice opening weekend

Also DS....DAT REBELS EPISODE

A lot of the blog types seem to want this to succeed, so while you might have those who are stuffy about stuff like this, I don't think it will be the majority.

I think the Kong numbers would be do able if BatB wasn't in its second weekend. Even with a big drop it should do over 70m easily, and you still have a movie like Life opening up.

That Tommy thing comes up a lot from what I have read online. So I wasn't the only Green/White Ranger fan boy. :funny:

You will be surprised to know it is rather aggressive. :o
You like it aggressive. :cwink:

I don't see it opening as well as Kong but above tracking? Sure.

PR would have to have overall positive reviews and extremely good wom to even hope to challenge BATB.

If PR opens in the high $40s to $50M, LGF will be very happy with that. (They spend a fraction of the marketing spend that WB and Disney shelled out for Kong and BaTB.) Box Office Pro's tracking seems to think that the multiple will be pretty good, like close to 3x the opening number.

Even if the movie opens to $45M, if the multiple remains 2.8x, that would be $130M domestic. That would be enough for LGF to greenlight a sequel.

In preparation for this movie I just watched for the first time since I was a kid in the 90's the '95 Power Rangers movie and I had an absolute blast watching this. Is this a good movie in the conventional sense? NOPE. But man, it is such a fun, corny, cheesy, action filled 90's fest of a film. This put a big nostalgic smile on my face.

10/10

If it does 130m domestically, it is going to need to do well over 300m overseas. Otherwise those they sold the rights to overseas won't be interested next time.

The new movie has to be better than that at least. Roger Ebert would be rolling in his grave if Nostalgia-ridden Millennial Buzzfeed writers write objective reasons why MMPR 1995 was better.

Bro, you know those editorials are comin either way. Lol

Well I remember when the new FF couldn't be worse in the Story movies.

Be honest, you aren't going to read reviews. You are going to read the RT score. :o

The first two Divergent movies didn't get to $300M worldwide, but they were close at $288M and $297M. But yeah, $300M and up is preferable due to the higher budget.

Nostalgia can be a very powerful thing, much more than a YA book series like Divergent.

Nostalgia is powerful. But I think it is odd to act like Power Rangers is BatB or Star Wars. It isn't Batman. Then there is the expectation of quality.

Also some of the great successes are YA books series. Harry Potter, Twilight, etc. Divergent started decently and fell off a cliff because they were so bad.

That depends on the age group of who you ask that question to.

And I'll be messaging them asking them where they went to school and then spam Roger Ebert's half star review.

But seriously though. They can't proclaim that the computer graphics in that movie to be any better than this? The 95 movie had effects straight out of Beast Wars.

I grew up with the original Power Rangers. They were my thing. The movie was a mini-religious experience for me. That does not mean in anyway it was ever of those height. How could it have the following and reach of the Disney Renaissance or Star Wars?

PR was a phenomenon yes...but to compare it to Star Wars? That's crazy talk

Star Wars kinda transcended the generation of kids that were nostalgic for it IMO. Like once upon a time, I bet Celebration/Whatever Star Wars-specific con was out there was once filled with 70's-80's kids, now that they have families etc and that the movies have continued staying power, it became a lot more. Celebration now would have a mix of every generation of people of different walks of life.

Exactly. Nostaglia is not limited to those that grew up at the time of the release. It is those that continued to fall in love over the years. One of the things that was underestimated about Jurassic World is how many people not only loved the original, but how much it has been passed down over the last 20 years. Like Disney flicks, like Star Wars.

I think Power Rangers is more comparable to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles than anything else in terms of it's level of impact

And this is exactly what I feared:

In fact, from the symphonic music that plays over the opening credits to the film’s glacially-paced origin story and the city-destroying robot fight with which it culminates, “Power Rangers” owes far more to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the “Twilight” generation, and Michael Bay’s “Transformers” movies than it does its own source material. If not for a handful of scattered call-backs and an amusingly incongruous performance from Elizabeth Banks (who plays the evil Rita Repulsa with such go-for-broke glee that it feels like she’s fulfilling a Make-A-Wish request for a dying fanbase), it would seem as though this movie were embarrassed of its origins.

Still, one review.

So one of the drafts I read for this

Had a green ranger teaser at the end, but in the vain of winter soldier...He was locked in some sort of chamber not moving.

From some of the spoilers I read, it seems that changed. lol

That script was bloody awful by the way.

Please tell me the critics-- they're not going go down that route with Power Rangers. Hating it because it's not a 1:1 of the source material.

I don't think it is quite TMNT level, but it is a much better comparison imo. Also nice AV Wheels. :woot:
