BOX OFFICE REPORT: PHILIPPINES

The new, origin film of Superman flew off to a blockbuster start yesterday as “Man of Steel” surpassed the industry's all-time opening day record with a nationwide gross of a monumental P69.52-M.

“Man of Steel's” phenomenal debut bested the opening day record previously established only last April by “Iron Man 3” at P62.9-million.

This was announced today by Francis Soliven, general manager of Warner Bros. (F.E.), Inc. which distributed the film. “This is a day of reckoning for Superman,” added Soliven. “He's a larger-than-life character beloved by millions of Filipinos, and this was proven today. Fans and families welcomed him back overwhelmingly as evidenced by the long lines, the ubiquitous Superman shirts everywhere, and the cheers at the end of screenings.”

Dominating the over all box-office with a 94 percent share, “Man of Steel” also posted the biggest opening day gross ever for Warner Bros. whose previous best first-day performer was “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” at P28.3-million.
Philipino loves superman!!! :)
isn't that a guy who did surgery to look like brandon routh? :D

thank you!!!

Yes! I know it's not much and we don't contribute a lot to BO sales but I'm really happy with the news here in the Philippines. Considering more cinemas screened IM3.

“MAN OF STEEL” BREAKS ALL-TIME FIRST-DAY RECORD WITH P69.52-M BOW

MANILA, June 13, 2013 – The new, origin film of Superman flew off to a blockbuster start yesterday as “Man of Steel” surpassed the industry's all-time opening day record with a nationwide gross of a monumental P69.52-M.

hopefully the US will join the Philippine in the sun. :D

I doubt the Philippines is the only place MOS breaks out.

Usually Hollywood movies break out in many places or none at all.

A billion doesn't seem to be out of the question anymore. The hype is amazing. The king has gotten his throne back in the Philippines, hopefully the rest of the world will follow.

If it starts breaking IM3's OS records in more places, the BO numbers will be crazy big....

But, MOS is not as well known in China, for example... (which will be bigger than all asian countries combined)...

What was the record there again?

I was not expecting this, but WOOHOO for the Philippines!

New Opening Day Record:
MAN OF STEEL (June 12, 2013) - 69.52 M Philippine Pesos (1.62 million US$)

Previous Record:
IRON MAN 3 (April 24, 2013) - 62.9 M Philippine Pesos (1.45 million US$)

Perhaps its time to adjust my OW projections, or is the Philippines not a good indicator of U.S. box office performance?

Hmmm, interesting numbers. I mean, Iron Man 3 was coming off Avengers and here comes Man of Steel and it beats that opening day record a month and a half later....

Honestly, the range for this film is anything from 70 million to 150 million and everything in between.

We...just...don't...know...anything.

It should indicate good things for Asian markets, I expect it to be big in Asia overall.

To be fair, it was a National Holiday here yesterday as we celebrated our Independence Day. But still, those are great numbers. :)

I think the peak will be in the Phillipines, they are #1 US comics nation in Asia complete with that weirdo cosmetic surgery Superfan. Any comicbook film be it DC or Marvel will need no introductions.

Without a focused marketing in China, don't expect an IM3 numbers repeat ...

Right on... this is also mainly due to the fact that English is like second nature to the filipinos... so, US comics are more accessible to them...

I would be more optimistic (about MOS performing well in Asia.) but last minute marketing is not a good thing, take the case of Wolverine, I can already see posters, standees in theaters.

Now, only if MOS did that six weeks before the movie's release date.

"Man of Steel opens officially in North America at midnight and will then be screened from Friday at an incredible 4,207 locations across the country. 850 of those are 2D only, while the rest will be a combination of 3D and 2D. In a bid to combat rival studio estimates of an opening weekend of $95 - $100 million, Warner Bros. are predicting a rather conservative $80 million for its first three days of release. However, it's thought that the added 3D ticket price may help it exceed these numbers, although a big part of that will also come down to word of mouth (Man of Steel may have received a mixed response from some critics, but the majority of fans who have been lucky enough to already see it have had nothing but good things to say). Advance ticket sales are strong and the film will also open at several key territories this weekend before debuting at an additional 26 next week. Ultimately, Man of Steel will be shown on 21,000 screens internationally. It has in fact already opened in the Philippines where it shattered their all-time box office record to become the biggest opening day ever with $1,657,532."

All I can say is SCREW the critics. I can not WAIT to see this movie and then read about it's financial success.

This movie needs a flood of fresh reviews to come in or it's going to hit the "rotten" rating. Poor Snyder, it was looking good for him to have a high rated movie for a while...

Poor Michael Bay. TF RT Scores: 57, 20, 36. Those powerful critics used their Grinchiness to keep the audience from having fun at the theaters. Nobody showed up and the movies were a huge disappointment at the box office and the franchise is dead. Oh, wait...

If the Philippines gives any indication on how it is going to perform that's a good sign. People are believing in the hype of this movie so much that even my grandparents are going to see it this weekend. The only other CB movie they saw was Spider-Man and Batman Begins.

We shall see. This may be a case of the public totally ignoring the critics and speaking loud and clear with their $$$.

Nice Philippines number!

What??!! Is RT blocked from the internet in the Phillipines? How could this happen??! Don't they have the same taste as Rex Reed and like to savor "The English Patient" while having some brie and mineral water?

Hell yeah!!!! I'm telling you guys, these critical ratings aren't going to sway people one way or another. Their *****ings are the exact opposite in what people want to see out of Superman when it comes to the GA. Fans are a different story, silver-screeners and fanboys always have a say, but the GA is big and it will show.

This Is the End is really killing it on RT for a raunchy comedy. That movie is going to take it's toll on MOS...
