If fans could see it accurately they would be super mad.At the campiness, corniness, the lack of a proper character arc for Clark,The fact that it is not an accurate representation of the Superman comics, the incredible lack of action for a Superman movie, the overly bearing Christ themes, the potrayal of Superman as Godman etc.
Superman succeded because it was the first true Superhero cbm.The start of a genre-a new era. That will always put in on a pedestal despite the fact its mediocre at best. The fact it was most fans first big screen exposure to Superman gives it a special place in their hearts-so any bad said about it will be deemed stupid.Truth is its nostalgia talking simply as that
Okay, first of all, let me say that I am not a big fan of any of the old films.
I do own them. I've seen the first 3 movies multiple times. I enjoy Kidder's Lois a lot, and there are moments in all the films that I genuinely enjoy.
That said, I'd be the first person to agree with you that they are campy and corny, missing massive character development points for Clark, don't have much physical action, are a little too 'preachy' for my tastes and I'd also add that I find the romantic chemistry cringeworthy.
And they are often defended with such passion, that you feel like a bad word against them is blasphemy in some people's eyes... which does get frustrating at times.
But what you're saying, and the way you are saying it, is completely wrong.
No one can be told that they aren't looking at a film accurately because they like it and you don't. It's all a matter of tastes. And those tastes don't come only from one age group, or one type of fan. All sorts of people, of all ages, and all levels of fandom, like the old Superman films. Heck, my friend who isn't even all that into movies was telling me he saw STM recently and loved it and loved Williams theme in it.
And I don't think you can call the film itself mediocre. Because you HAVE to regard it's quality within the context of it's time, and what it achieved.
It was by no means mediocre. It was an incredible film of it's time, it was huge.
