MCU: The Marvel Cinematic Universe Official Discussion - Part 4

As an Asian American, I am fine right now with Melinda May and Daisy in the MCU, but I do hope for Shang Chi, Colleen Wing and Wong soon.

I just noticed that Luke Cage has three of the five black actresses with major roles in the MCU in Rosario Dawson, Simone Missick and Alfrie Woodard. That will obviously change with Black Panther, but will the female roles in BP be meaningless supporting roles? With the exception of Idris Elba as Heimdall and Djimon Honsou as Korath, many of the black actors in the MCU have major roles to play in the films and on TV: SLJ, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Mike Colter, Henry Simmons, Eka Darville and coming soon Chadwick Boseman.

Dawson, Missick and Woodard are likely to have major roles in Luke Cage. But in the movies, the only one has been Zoe Saldana and she's playing an alien. There's no guarantee Shuri will be in Black Panther, but if she is, will she have the same amount of screentime as Lady Sif did in the two Thor movies? Or will it be less, like Lady Sif in either film separately? What if the Ramonda character and the Dora Milaje are taken out of the film? That only leaves Monica Lynne. But will Monica Lynne be a one and done character or be a recurring character in the MCU? If she's one and done, I think Marvel goes with a lesser known actress like Teyonah Parris (Chi-Raq) or Tessa Thompson (Creed, Dear White People). If she's recurring they'll go for a known actress. But if she does recur, does she appear in another movie that isn't a Black Panther movie? That is why if Monica Lynne is introduced, make her a cop or even make her Monica Rambeau.

And speaking of Monica Rambeau, who does Marvel cast and how old will the actress be? They want someone closer to the ages of Evans, Pratt and Hemsworth? Or do they want someone closer to the age of RDJ, Rudd or Ruffalo? Or somewhere in between? I got a list of about ten black actresses I want to see in the MCU in any role.

1. Gugu Mbatha Raw
2. Taraji P. Henson
3. Gabrielle Union
4. Meagan Good
5. Kerry Washington
6. Lupita Nyong'o
7. Naomie Harris
8. Nicole Beharie
9. Tessa Thompson
10. Teyonah Parris

Out of the ten though, I am having a hard time figuring out which Marvel character I would cast Taraji P. Henson as.

So, if EVER happened, how do you guys think the MCU would handle the Robert Reynolds, The Sentry? In the comics, he is...just basically god like in power, and that normally isn't portrayed in the MCU, except maybe the Celestials in GOTG. So, taking into account the Sentry would have to be severely depowered. What do you think his powers would be at minimum?

Or would the comparisons to Superman permanently keep The Sentry away from the MCU forever?

I'm not sure if Suerman like characters like Sun God, Hyerion or Sentry would make it into the mcu anytime soon. If they did they'd have to be powered down to fight regular characters. The power leve of the hero or villain honestly depends on what the plot requires it to be. Thats why one minute Hull can beat half the MU and the next he's having difficulty taking on Iron Man.

Personally I would like to see The Sentry at some point, and I wouldn't want him powered down but it would probably happen as all the others have been.

I think him being both villain and hero could be an awesome dynamic.

I wouldn't mind a power down honestly. I'm not really into the whole omnipotent hero, having a power level the same as Thor, with shooting energy beams everywhere would be fine by me.

The potentials with the void and his mental issues, would be pretty cool to see.

Sentry might be better suited for a Netflix series than a feature film, perhaps.

I think Captain Marvel's probably gonna get some Superman comparisons as well, so yeah, I don't expect to see The Sentry any time soon.

I hate the Sentry as a character. An Agrophobic dude with "power of a thousand suns"..wtf does that even mean? How do bring a character like that on screen and then justify him ever losing without some massive plot contrivances. From a writing perspective, he's an absolute nightmare

Him being obviously similar to Superman is arguably the point. Like Hyperion, the fact that he's so much like Superman is part of the joke.

The method and structure of his origin wouldn't translate from comic to screen very well, but he is an interesting character. Worthy if screen time in my opinion. And the fact that he is his own super villian is a perfect representation of that flawed Marvel hero. But he worked best in his original book. He would not be done justice thrown into the middle of the MCU. Hence a Netflix miniseries, maybe 6 episodes instead of the usual 13, would be the fitting.

Though it would be really cool to pair him up with the Hulk, that relationship was intriguing in the comic books. His story just needs some top notch adapting and reinterpreting to be brought into the MCU without being short changed.

Alot of things are linked to TWS. Even still with CW it's linked to TWS, AoU wasn't even about Cap and it was linked to TWS.

Marvel Studios' President on 'Doctor Strange' Gender Swap: "It Doesn't Matter"

Tilda Swinton

The change from male to female for mentor The Ancient One made sense because the character is "very androgynous," says Kevin Feige.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has a message for fans
upset at the announcement that the Ancient One in Marvel's Doctor Strange won't be the wizened old man that he appears as in the comic books, but instead be portrayed by Tilda Swinton: it's not important.

"Look, she’s a chameleon in everything she does," Feige told Entertainment Weekly about Swinton, going on to say that she "has this amazing [ability to] harness of this androgynous sense." That's apparently important because, in Feige's words, "we use the term 'her' and 'she' in the film but, other than that, [the role is] very androgynous. Because it doesn’t matter."

Technically, that's true. The Ancient One — supernatural mentor to Doctor Strange, who offers advice as a ghost following a death which saved the world from an extra-dimensional threat — is a comic book character whose gender is entirely superfluous to their existence. Their entire narrative purpose is to offer vague advice and prognostications to Strange, which allows them to be male, female or anywhere on the spectrum in-between. The comic book incarnation of the character was always presented as male, however, complete with a beard to underscore the matter.

Not that the fact that it "doesn't matter" stops Feige from being excited about the switch, however.

"We’re never afraid to change," he told EW about Marvel's bravery, citing the swap from human butler to artificial intelligence for Jarvis as an example. "I think if you look at some of the early incarnations of the Ancient One in the comics, they are what we would consider today to be quite, sort of, stereotypical. They don’t hold up to what would work today."

For Swinton, the notion of which gender her character is will be left purposefully vague. "I wouldn't know how to answer that one," she said in response to an EW request for comment. "I think it’s all in the eye of the beholder."

Doctor Strange, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular hero, will be released Nov. 4, 2016.

If the sentry shows up in a netflix marvel show,or agents of shield or agent carter it will still be the mcu.
If he does show up like blue marvel and hyperion in the mcu it should be in a mcu show first or the netflix show, like defenders season 2 or 3 maybe as an ally.

He does not have be on the team and he could have his own mcu netflix mini-series later, show or movie/s,or he could show up on agents of shield first or agent carter or the new mcu shows upcoming then have show/mini-series/movie/s later on netflix etc..

The could always show up too in the movies down the road, but if not, that's okay too,at least they will be shown in live action.

The same for blue marvel and hyperion.

Star trek deep space was the best star trek from my point of view and they never had a movie,so everything does not need to be movie or have movie.

If these characters do have a movie/s one day or show up in the mcu movies from the mcu shows, that's just more icing on cake as far as i am concern, but i rather these characters show up first in animated shows/movies and live shows first before they show up in movies anyway.

By the way hyperion has shown up in the new animated avengers show, but that version is evil.

I see what you mean, perhaps something similar to his reintroduction in the pages of the first volume of New Avengers, by Bendis and McNiven. The Avengers could find him and he would be a character surrounded in mystery until a mini series on Netflix has the opportunity to deal with the tougher aspects of his origin in more depth and detail.

Did you guys see Whedon's Q&A where he goes into detail about his relationship with Marvel, AOU, etc?

Saw this last week. Whedon doesn't feel anti-Marvel to me at all. He keeps saying AoU is basically his movie and probably already knew he was done with marvel by 2013. He also was clearly disappointed for the backlash he got for AoU. Even if you listen to his Empire podcast he just sounded tired, seems obvious after spending 5 years being a consigliere and writing and directing all by himself two of Hollywood's biggest productions ever. I think everyone would. Even if you don't like his creative choices or style you gotta give the Man some credit for What he's done. I still believe he could come back in a couple years for something smaller than Avengers.

Like Runaways maybe? That's smaller scale and less well known. He also wrote for the comics. He even specifically mentioned in this interview how much he loved doing that.

Oh I am still a big fan of the guy, despite my issues with AOU, but again, I think many of those problems were down to Marvel as well but Joss wouldn't throw them under he bus.

Anyway, I look forward to what Joss does next, would love him to bring Firefly/Serenity back.
