Cho was even hesitant about getting the Mr. Sulu role in Star Trek and asked George Takei if he was alright with a Korean playing a Japanese guy.
that's right. and it wasn't until Takei told Cho about Roddenberry's vision of a Panasian Union that Cho agreed.

In the specific case at hand it has also to do with the availability of half-Vietnamese actresses with the right age, the right look and the acting skills/comedic timing to act against the other cast members. I'm not an expert of the Vietnamese film industry, have only seen Lửa Phật and Thiên Mệnh Anh Hùng in recent years, so if a person that fits the criteria actually exists I wouldn't know. However, MS has one of the finest casting directors (if not the best) and if she decided for a half-Korean instead, there might be reasons for it.

the important thing is more real world actors getting opportunities in their chosen field. What happens in the fictional universe is secondary to that. Why approach this as "There are no Native American superheroes! :cmad:" and not "Native American performers are **** out of luck in Hollywood! :cmad:" , for example? Priorities. Empathy.

On a tangent, I dislike the notion that a kid can't have a superhero role model if their skin color is different. Steve Roger's message should resonate with everyone.

That is true about Native Americans. Besides, Hollywood can't use Wes Studi all of the time.

Because the MCU is a franchise many people care about and some of them are the same people who also have a problem with the state things for minorities in Hollywood anyway.

Me saying I'd like to see more heroes of color in the MCU doesn't somehow mean I also don't think there needs to be more roles for minorities in general.

I haven't seen anyone here say that little black or Asian or Hispanic kids aren't allowed to view Captain America as a role model. Merely that it'd be nice if not all the superheroes presented as potential role models for children were overwhelmingly white.

To bring up John Cho again, he's talked about why Mr. Sulu was so important for him and a lot of other Asian Americans. When they were younger, he was literally one of the only heroic Asian guys a lot of them ever saw on TV or in movies.

This is true. Before that it's been either Asian actors playing bad guy roles or white actors in Yellow face.

Takei has always been a role model for Asian Americans in Hollywood. It was him and James Hong, but Takei is super famous because of Sulu.

If you divided the Asian American down ethnic lines in Hollywood among the East Asians (not including Indians), Vietnamese Americans have the least amount of famous people in Hollywood and yet there have been a ton of movies about the Vietnam War. We basically have Maggie Q, who's only half Vietnamese. Chinese, Japanese and Korean Americans have a lot of actors in Hollywood.

More often than not, in Hollywood, Pakistani characters are portrayed by Indian actors. An (ethnically) half-Korean/half-alien woman portraying a half-Vietnamese/half-alien woman isn't a big deal to me. Who knows... in the MCU, Mantis might even be half-Korean... or even full-alien, for that matter.

On Agents Of SHIELD, Simon Kassianides (IIRC an actor of Greek descent) played a relatively minor character of Indian descent named Sunil Bakshi. It didn't really bother me since he does (kinda) look Indian and it wasn't something ridiculously offensive... though it would've been interesting to see some horrendous old-school-Hollywood brownface, just for the OMG-ness of it. :)

I suspect Mantis will be a full alien just because I think they want Peter Quill to be alone out there.

^

yup, that would be my guess as well. Which would render the half-Korean/half-Vietnamese thing moot.

To be fair that happens a lot with Caucasians as well.

And latinos, when we actually manage to land an important role.

Pacino isn't hispanic, much less Cuban, but he was still great in Scarface.

I don't see the problem in this as long as they're trying to portray minorities and doing it the right way, not just changing races for PC reasons (like Mandarin).

I think that the problem that many people have with stuff like that is that you're using an explicitly Latino/Caribbean character, and by casting Pacino you're taking that opportunity away from an actual Latino/Caribbean actor who is still waiting for his shot to make it big (and being in a Brian de Palma movie would probably fit that bill). And when such a relatively small number of them even get a shot to do that, much less succeed, it sticks out even more.

I will concede that Pacino was really enjoyable in that movie though. But then again he's one of my favorites and I tend to enjoy him in general.

And that is a very valid point.
What's not valid? "Pacino isn't dark enough to be Cuban", and similar comments. Those show complete ignorance and miss the point of what a character is about.
Similarly, complaining about a Puerto Rican being cast as a Cuban or Mexican, I consider those arguments equally ignorant and counter productive.
Just like the argument that you shouldn't have minorities in villain roles.
If the real issue is equality/equal opportunities for all actors then all roles should be taken into account, not just hero roles.
That was my main gripe with the IM3 Mandarin twist. Not so much the Trevor/Killian switch, but that Killian was a white guy because the director thought showing an asian Mandarin would be racist...

I had a thought tonight thinking about the Infinity Stones, mostly the two remaining. What if they used the Necronomicon in Dr Strange? Its an MU artifact, and it could have the Soul Stone set into its binding, giving it power.

Any particular reason for that?

I suppose the obvious followup question is over how many months did the show take place (same question for Daredevil)?

Having just started rewatching it, you have people in t shirts in the first episode and overtime everyone starts dressing warmer.

Which lends to the idea that the show takes up the late 2014/early 2015 time span. They also claim its only been 2 years since Avengers/The Incident.

Wasn't it shown on the hospital computer that Reva, who died "a year ago" died in January 2014 or something?

I believe it did.

Alsol btw, Sorry I wasnt specific, I was first answering the question for DD

Basically the reasons stated above was my reasoning. There's no mention of Sokovia. Plus, AoS seems to be running parallel to real time as there's several episodes that mention the movie's events(IM3, Winter Soldier, Dark World, Age Of Altron and Ant-Man. So that's why I have it around that time.

To me, lack of mention isn't really all that specific. If someone said two years since the incident, that's much clearer (the question is if they said it early on or later).

Anybody could put it where they want on the timeline. The one I posted above is just comfortable with me and the way I like it.
