hoskins = yes.... hoffman = yes.... but paul giamatti.... would that work?

After seeing the "John Adams" miniseries, I am convinced that Paul Giamatti can handle any role which is handed to him. The man is one of the best actors in America today, and I think he would make a downright perfect Penguin.

JACK Black For The Penguin.

Why would a Panda want to play The Penguin...No...

Indeed...Like I said before...Hoskins, Hoffman, Giamatti...Only people who can do it...I think...

Thats the thing. The mobs been kicked around now. Their new inspiration could be the financial support the Penguin offers. They could flock to him in droves because his idea is to have an all powerful mob rather than a few gangs.

A good subplot would be Catwoman being more of a Robin Hood. Stealing from Bruce Wayne and the Penguin to help the poor. Sure she's helping but she's a theif and stealing for her own good too. I wouldn't show her as a love interest in this movie yet though.

Good thoughts. The real issue at hand is that the status quo in/for Gotham has been challenged and upset. There are always winners and losers and most do not let go of what they had without some form of resistance or fight. On the flipside of that, there will be those who may have not been in a position to try reasonably to make a move for something and may be able to now. A plethora of established interests and perhaps ones that are not very apparent are competing now.

I've always supported Hoskins for the role but I had another idea, it's outside the box and the guy in no way physically resembles the Penguin but he's got this sleazy charm to him that is absolutely spot on for the part.
James Woods!

I basically see the Penguin working similar to how he is in comics today.
He's a gangster with a ligitmate front - a nightclub and likes to dress real classy. So... fat gangster, own's a club which he does his dirty dealings out the back.

That's the best way to use him in my opinion.

So would everyone be cool about the Penguin being british? Because it never really occured to me that he could possibly be a british character.

That, in my opinion, is PERFECT. That's exactly how I think the Penguin should be portrayed.

We’ve always had that one not so main villain who represents the Gotham’s mob… that could be the Penguin. The possibility for the character has already been established in the Nolan-verse… in Gotham Times, in the TDK virals, there is a brief mention of a club named The Iceberg Lounge. Who’s the owner? British businessman Oswald Cobblepot. Why British? Well, I think he should be a newcomer. If the Penguin was in the national scene he should have been more visible.

He could be a good character. Being an arms dealer, he can be as much of a technology-freak as Batman is. Much of Batman's advantage is that he has always a superior tech... but that may not be the case with Cobblepot.

And it is important that he is regarded as an upstanding citizen in Gotham... a criminal that's blessed by society to contrast Batman's situation as an outcast from society. Cobblepot is a member of the rich and respected elite. Without the outdated monocle, of course… just glasses.

Falcone is insane and Maroni took his place, but most of the main gang members were killed in TDK (Gambol, Maroni, the Chechen). So there's a power void in Gotham's mob, and Cobblepot could step in.

I can imagine a mob members meeting in a storage facility during a rainy day... thugs outside check that no one brings guns to the meeting, and Cobblepot doesn't have any... he just enters with his
umbrella.

Next thing you know, that penguin-dressed guy doesn't like the deal he's being offered and every mob boss at the meeting is killed by machine-gun fire coming out of that
umbrella.

That'd be cool. And we also have a main female character who likes to rob rich people, Catwoman. But she may fin that stealing from THIS rich elitist guy is not easy at all. And when the guy is controlling part of Gotham’s mob, then stealing from him comes with a price.

I want Oswald Cobblepot in this next film. I will be very disappointed if either he or Roman Sionis don't take over the mob element of Gotham City. We need the "freaks" to take over now that the Joker and Two-face all but eliminated the traditional gangsters. I feel that Cobblepot (Penguin) or Sionis (Black Mask) fit this bill PERFECTLY, also you could use Arnold Wesker/Scarface (but that's more difficult to not make look silly).

My candidates for Oswald:
1.) Phillip Seymour Hoffman
2.) Bob Hoskins
3.) Paul Giammati

Ricky Gervais, in his first dramatic role, as the Penguin. I like when comedian do darker material. I really liked Robin Williams in Nolan's Insomnia and in 1 Hour Photo.

Ricky Gervais is a comic-personality. All his movie roles have played into to this personality. It's what he does in his stand-ups, his films, his tv chat-shows and down the pub.

Robin Williams is a comic-actor. He acts.

There is a distinct difference.

The fact that you are seriously (are you seriously) suggesting (?) Ricky Ger-fricken-vais as an actual casting choice for this franchise astounds me. Really it does.

[Ricky Ger-fricken-vais has a ring to it, don't you think?]

You are easily astounded. I think Ricky Gervais is a fantastic actor with a certain underlying sadness like most comedian and a sharp intelligence that would fit the character well. I don't think we have seen all that he can do yet, but it's just my opinion.

Ricky Gervais can only play one character, whether it's in the Office, Extras, Stardust or that new movie. I never want to see him near a Batman movie, let alone someone major like The Penguin

I like Toby Jones, Bob Hoskins, or Paul Giamatti for the Penguin

As much as I like Hoskins, isn't he a little old for the part now? 10 years ago would have been perfect imo.

The penguin isnt young, it doenst really matter. Hoskins is still great, his age doesnt matter he still fits the part.

Hoskins is awesome but I'm not sure I want a penguin in his late sixties, (early seventies by the time they shoot the film), just my opinion though. Anyway, he was so good in Mona Lisa and Long good friday. He is the man.
