and after all that anguish about spider-man etc, the ultimate lesson of the tale is...don't go round to Carnage's place for a cup of tea, no matter how big his telly is.
I haven't read any Ultimate spider-man , but I will probably take a look at them at some point now that the movie is going to be based on them.
But, from what people have been saying about how different the villans are....to me, making the villans *that* different is just the same as them changing them for the film. Like they did with the Penguin in BR.
that's kind of okay for some villans, ones that arn't *that* developed, but for others, changing the classics, ugh, forget about it. If they change the villans that much, I don't care if they have been in 'Ultimate' comics, it will not be a true adaptation of the universe of Spider-man. It would be more like only releasing Mozart's music as played on banjos. A novelty version done just for a change, not something that should be commited to an expensive medium like film that will come to reflect the characters in the general public's mind.

They never debunked it to begin with. All they did was deny it. Studios, actors, reps, etc. lie all the time about leaked stories. Them saying something isn't true means absolutely nothing.

I think Gwen Stacy's death was handled better in Ultimate than in 616. Instead of a villain throwing Gwen off the bridge and her dying, resulting in Peter's one dimensional guilt. In Ultimate it's more deeper than that Gwen is a teen that has tried to commit suicide on multiple occasions, but finds comfort as Peter's friend. After her father is killed by a criminal wearing a spider-man costume she turns her hatred towards life into hating spiderman, even after learning it wasn't the real spiderman who killed her father. She feels that Spiderman is the one responsible for breeding the people he goes after. When Aunt May has Gwen Stacy move into her house this adds more guilt to Peter, he feels just like Uncle Ben he's responsible for another death, and another family member whose heart is broken. Gwen learns that Peter is spiderman and pulls a gun on him, she runs away and forgives Peter for the actions of another. When Gwen dies by the hands of Carnage at his home, that death sends Peter into a deep depression.

Well, up until the part where Carnage kills GS, the story seems much like the one in the original comics. Apart from the fact that they have made her a tough bad-ass with emotional problems.
Which could be alright, but could also come off as contrived if handled in a cheesey way.

edit: Ok, I am just going by the synopsis and pics that have been posted, but the ultimate character *could* be better. The Gwen in the original comics is basically an ideal, every guy's idea of the perfect girlfriend to have, one that is loyal, beautiful, smart and never ever, ever thinks about going off with another guy.
She is actually kind of unrealistic in a way. In the real world, any girl who had as many suspicions about and problems with an absent Pete would have at least considered going off with Flash T, who she seemed to have feelings for.
Sure, the Ultimate one seems idealised in the way of the tough bad ass girl who can take knifes off big bad guys, but that could be toned down and she could just be a take no crap kind of tough girl who does not necesarily conform to 'girly' stereotypes. But they have to have her killed off by the Goblin for sure.

And just as imporantly as the Goblin killing Gwen (Goblin Legacy), or being responsible, is Peter try8ing to save her, thinking he has... only to find out.. he has not.

Greatness.. and befitting of Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Ultimate Gwen's death was lame, lacked any real emotional punch, and more importantly, there was no real villain who caused her death.

Carnage was a mindless entity. It wasn't even called Carnage.

How anyone can say that the Gwen Stacy story is not as well written as...USM's garbage version of her is beyond me. She is EMO, has no distinct personality, whiny, annoying, and existed only to die in USM. In ASM, Gwen was THE one at the time. Killing her was a genuine shock, and the fact she was THE one for Peter makes the story all the sadder and more impactful. Plus, she dies at the hands of Spider-Man's greatest enemy in ASM. That is an honor for a character. USM, she gets killed by a somehow even lamer version of Carnage

lol, maybe i won't be spending money on these Ultimate books after all, maybe a visit to the library.

As loveable as the original version is, I think she has to be a little less perfect for her to feel real, but still keep her as loyal and brave etc. Just so we don't feel like she is merely a wish fulfilment character, or that we are being *totally* manipulated into loving her before she is killed off. She cannot be defined by her death, she has to be an interesting and likeable character in her own right, so that the loss is felt by the audience too, not like Rachel Dawes in TDK where folk were not that bothered, and whose role in TDK seemed to be geared towards making Dent and Waynes more interesting as a result of her death.
