Late questions : which part of the Gov is using The Machine ? The Machine is Northern light right ?

Late questions : which part of the Gov is using The Machine ? The Machine is Northern Lights right ?

The original terrorism-detection project (by Finch and Ingram) was called Northern Lights. But as the opening narration describes, Northern Lights could also flag ordinary crime - the so-called “irrelevant numbers.” Finch left the project, but still had backdoor access to these numbers. And it’s this part of Northern Lights (which communicates with Finch, [occasionally] Reese and [now] Root) that is typically called “the Machine.”

If I’m recalling correctly, the Machine has taken various actions to make itself (herself? :word:) autonomous from the original Northern Lights system. E.g., it has switched over to “contingency/secondary” and then “tertiary” operations. Thus, the government’s shutdown of Northern Lights would have no effect on the Machine.

That’s my understanding at any rate. If someone else wants to provide a more accurate tutorial, please do so! :cwink:

Yes, as far as I know, that's correct. But now that Northern Lights isn't operating anymore, apparently Root is getting the relevant numbers the government used to get, while Reese, Finch and Shaw are getting the same 'irrelevant' numbers as before.
I don't know how Samaritan affects the prime machine, though.

Thanks, I remember the things I had forgotten.

The Machine = part of Northern Lights program
The Machine = copied and moved itself outside of Gov reach
Control = try to get access back to The Machine
Decima Tech = private contractor building its own AI ( I thought the Old Man was a Gov spy or something ... )

Well, I still miss many things in the process, I watch all the show in original version w/o subtitle ( unless the accents are too strong ).

Yeah, it does get confusing after a while with all this names: Decima, Northern Lights, Vigilance, Control, Samaritan and so on.

I thought Reese had killed that guy, but Finch's squeamishness is going to cause them all a lot more problems. I wonder why he disappeared at the end despite Reese doing what he wanted.

It was a great twist that they were the actual threats to the person they were protecting, this show never fails to deliver.

I wonder what Root must be doing during that time? There has to be a reason why the machine didn't send her instead to kill the congressman.

That's a great point, if the machine really wanted Maccord dead then surely Root was the one to send, she what not have hesitated, which makes me think that was not what the machine actually wanted and that somehow Finch's faith will be restored.

Was it too much to hope for a bikini scene? :O

This show needs more car chases and less shooting.

I half expected Sam and Mike (Burn Notice) to show up during the Root Shaw scene in Miami

Calling it now - I think Reese will die this season, probably sacrificing himself in order to save Finch. I mean, I don't want it to happen, but I just can't see another member of Team Machine NOT dying before the end of the season with the way things have been set up recently.

That being said, I'm probably going to be totally wrong and end up being surprised. :woot:

it would be a an extremely bold move to do that considering they just killed off Carter

This show is amazing. I thought the congressman had been killed. Now what happens since they listened to Finch over the Machine? Is someone else going to die?

The moral debate of what they were doing was excellent, with good points made by everyone. I'm truly surprised at the choice made. Great choice for the final song. It worked with everything, including the escape which was well shot. I actually thought the gun shots were part of the song until Shaw was hit.

What will happen in 24 hours? :wow:

If you want a partial answer:

"As Decima uses Samaritan’s feeds to hunt Reese and Shaw, Greer exploits Finch’s greatest weakness in an attempt to lure him out of hiding: his love for his former fiancée, Grace Hendricks."

NEW PROMO

''If they harm her in any way ,kill them all''

Daamn Harold

Reese's grinned when he heard those words. At least that's how the spot looked.

[BLACKOUT]Grace has a yellow square, guess she'll find out about the Machine this episode.[/BLACKOUT]

Its most likely a flashback scene, if I recall they (Grace and Harold) had the same scene at a similar place at an art museum in season 2 when they went on their first date,it seems that when the machine accesses past events it puts the yellow box on some of the characters, for example this season it did it for Reece way before he even knew about the machine existing (2007)

Yes, but (as far as we know) she doesn't have knowledge of The Machine. So she'll have to find out this episode to be given a yellow box, flashback or present day.
