RoboCop Reboot - Part 4

People with differing opinions are scary and not to be trusted.

Just read that Cracked article.

I think they raised some good points, but I still don't know how much you can infer about a movie after watching a two-minute trailer. Granted, there ARE times when a trailer can make a movie look like garbage (the trailers for the first G.I. Joe movie and all of the Resident Evil films come to mind) but I don't think that's really the case here. The trailer at least gives the impression of a well-made film. The backlash has more to do with adherence to the original. And whenever you have that, you always have people coming out of the woodwork telling you how this director doesn't "get" the concept they way that THEY do.

And I'm not even saying that they're wrong here. They might very well be on the mark. Admittedly, there are things about the film that concern me too. The most troubling aspects of it to me are more typical red flags, however (the February release date, the fact that it took SO long before we saw any footage). But if we're just judging the film by the trailer, I don't know that you can accurately conclude that it is a monumental failure. Yes, they've clearly changed some things but would you rather have the film copy the original, shot-for-shot? Ask Gus Van Sant how good of an idea that is.

I just rewatched the trailer and I noticed something HUGE that we all overlooked.

In the original script, Robocop's final design had 2 modes: A black SWAT mode (the one we've been seeing all this time) and a blue Social Mode.

Well, the Social Mode is in fact in the trailer. It's very easy to miss as it flashes really quickly and does look alot like the Silver one we see him wearing in the trailer, but this is in fact the Robocop 3.0 armor yet its light blue (like a cop's uniform) and slightly modified as described in the script.

If this is featured throughout the film (likely through CGI), then I would be fine with it. The blue tint is reminiscent of what Robocop had in Robocop 2 and onward and it makes for a fine compromise for fans looking for something closer to the original design.

they never filmed 3.0 with a brighter color on location. in the script what color is he when he is presented to the crowd?

Black.

But there are multiple moments in the script where he changes between the two. The black was his primary form though.

I took some screenshots from the trailer of the various suits shown. Easier to see and compare. Click to make larger.

The third one in the pic (modern silver) looks really good and I wish they would just keep it instead of... going with black.

The fact the biggest complaint about the movie so far is the (poor) choice of color for RoboCop gives me hope it will be a good / decent remake.

This doesn't look bad at all. The fact that I can see Michael Keaton and Gary Oldman acting together is reason enough for me to check this out.

The black suit just pales in comparison when next to the silver versions, how did the creative team not see this?

Damn right. It's about time Batman got to work with a Jim Gordon who is worth a sh**.

I wonder about the on set talks they had, I'm curious the jokes about Batman that they had, I'm sure they had a riot.

:lmao:

From YT:

finally he moves like a human and fast ... I grew ten years in 90 minutes watching the old Robocop move about. .

Have been dying to watch the original since the trailer for this came out, finally got it on Bd and watched, still a classic movie, but the trailer gave me hope that the re-make will be good as well, really looking forward to it.

ok. it's just my knee-jerk reaction to someone bashing the original movie.
it's the same as saying classic sci-fi movies like blade runner aren't that* good.

anyways...Gordon's ally, when you get the chance, i think you should watch the original robocop :woot:

OK this is accepted LOL.

I promise I´ll watch it .I am really curious why all the people say it´s a masterpiece .:yay:

I just got the trilogy, I've owned Robocop in one form or another all my life pretty much but never the second one as I remember not liking it as a kid. But I'll give it a second chance in was it can't be any worse than Robocop 3 which I don't think I'll be watching again anytime soon. The first a Robocop is one of the greatest films of all-time, in my top ten of all-time for sure and for he it's better than a The Terminator which I also love.

As good as the original Robocop is and as much as I love it, for me at least it could never top the first Terminator it's on the same level for sure but I think Arnold pushes that boundary for me.

Each to their own, it's very close but a Robocop just edges it for me.

On that subject I'm surprised they never tried to make a a Robocop vs a Terminator film

I just had a thought about why remakes/reboots/re-imaginings are so popular and "in". It's not only because you have to retain the rights by making something after a certain number of years - or because they want to cash in on merchandise and keep the franchise relevant / people want to see what they already know...

The DVD/Blu-Ray sales of the old movies go up, up, up because people want to "catch up" before seeing the new one in theaters.

Really, this type of movie is a no-brainer for studios, and it's a win-win situation all around. Even if it doesn't make a lot in theaters, the franchise will make money because people are re-discovering the old films. This is why Green Lantern was such a risk: there's nothing that came before it that people can consume at your local Target or Walmart. They tried to start a franchise. Starting a franchise is almost impossible now. It has to be a sequel or a pre-existing property.

I notice this every time there's a new X-men movie. They repackage / re-release the films on DVD/Blu-Ray with new covers, package them together in a "Trilogy" / "Collection" box-set, and sales skyrocket for people who need to refresh their knowledge or be introduced.

I'm telling you, home video sales are a HUGE part of why these theatrical movies are made.

Probably an obvious/"duh" observation, but I like having "duh" moments, so there. :o

I'm pretty sure when Orion owned both franchises they had no idea what they could've achieved with it, by the time T2 came out the Terminator franchise had been sold off and was such a huge hit I don't think they even felt it was necessary at that point.

But hey we did get a crappy video game based off the idea, I remember wanting that game to be good so badly but it sucked.

I love, LOVE Robocop 1, but better than The Terminator? No, not for me, both are in my top 10 of all time, but Terminator is in the top 5 and i dont think Robocop would be for me personally, love both though.

Robocop 2 was always a decent sequel, its not as good as the first movie, but its much better than the 3rd in every way possible. Plus, the fight between Robocop and Robocop 2 at the end is still great, even with the dated effects.

I just recently re-watched Robocop 2 for the first time in years recently and the film has a lot of good to it particulary the effects and action scenes, but comparing to the first film it just looks bad.

^In all fairness though the 1st movie is an absolute classic of the genre, the 2nd is a decent sequel and doesnt get the credit it deserves. It was miles better than R3 and at least had a few good points in the movie.
