Star Trek Beyond - Part 3

It will be interesting to see what they do with the inside of the ship. I expect they will shy away from Abrams' Apple Store bridge and Brewery Engineering.

Also, here is a great, insightful review from a writer I follow named Vyce Victus. Let's just say his own background as a black serviceman brings some interesting angles to his thoughts about the film.

I'm hoping the Enterprise-A has a more toned down bridge like the Franklin's bridge.

While this film has always been up front about the fact that the Enterprise gets destroyed, I actually appreciate how long its destruction took.

They really put up a solid fight and escape attempt and the ship continues to be an important factor and setting in later sections of the film.

How did you all feel about Jaylah?

Personally I don't know how I feel about her role in the film.

The new Enterprise-A had some significant design changes. The nacelles were further apart, the saucer edges were angled instead of perpendicular, there was a ridge running from behind the bridge bubble on top of the saucer with some red on it and some other minor changes give it an overall sharper profile than the first Enterprise.

The average moviegoer probably can't distinguish those in 10 seconds of screen time for the new Enterprise.

I saw it last night. Loved it. Thought the villain was much better this time than Khan last time. So glad to see Sulu get more screen time and his husband and kid were adorable and I want more of that.

I've been saying this for three movies now but I want to see more of Uhura next time. Zoe is such a great actress and she shouldn't be wasted

Uhura did more in this movie but she still felt like she did the least. It's just hard to make a communications officer be more active in a feature film's plot because that's their only job. I can see why they gave Uhura and Spock a romance. It gave her more to do than just sitting there.

Uhura was the one that had the most screentime with Krall regarding his plan, so she felt more important.

Screentime sure, but she really just stood around and followed so Krall could have someone to talk to. Not that great, but better than the last two films.

I was disappointed that:

Carol Marcus wasn't there, nor was she mentioned even.

But that's one of my few relatively minor critiques of the film.

Here's a little something to make up for that.

I think this film does a good job of showing how the different circumstances of this Kirk's life and his father's legacy effect him. There are doubts we see with this Kirk that maybe we didn't see with the Shatner version until the later films.

Three movies(and potentially a fourth) on Kirk's father issues is a bit much. But you're right, it is different. But I honestly wouldn't have mind putting that time into Kirk/Bones or Kirk/Carol or anything.

They could go into the repercussions of a destroyed Vulcan but its hard to explore in terms of films. In a show you can have a more Spock focus episode or arc. In general destroying Vulcan just wasn't a great idea.
I don't think so. This universe still has history behind it. The reason TNG is so remember is because it built memorable villains with visuals and cultures.

The Vulcans are at their weakest and no other has taken advantage to get revenge and wipe them out of existence? The Klingons? Andorians?

We've had three movies of one man with anger against the Federation for it's actions but we've not really seen the Federation making tough decisions. In a position of making tough choices that protecting the Vulcans would have.

Oh man did i love this. I'm sorry but here's a big time Trek fan who loves all 3 in the JJ verse so far and i think it comes down to the thing i love the most in both TOS and TNG, the cast and their chemistry. Just loved the character work and interactions in this one.

They had a chance once in Into Darkness when it really seemed that she was going to be doing some negotiating with the Klingons... but it was like you could literally hear the film itself say 'Screw that! Lasers now!" and a fight broke out.

I agree that going back to the George Kirk story in the 4th one is not a great move. This movie really seemed to put that to bed as Jim seems to have found his own sense of purpose.

And again, TNG is a TV show. Cultures like the Klingons, the Cardassians and the Ferengi were built up over years.

I really enjoyed this film. I agree with the opinion that given the circumstances, Jaylah would be an excellent replacement for Chekov to fill in the gap. No one can replace the actor or character but Jaylah has the right kind of personality to fit into it nicely.

So it made about 60 mil?

Yes. Ok verging on not great. International grows with each film though.

To this day I hold they dropped the ball by waiting 4 years to make a sequel to Trek 09 after all the buzz and hype that came with that one.

They pretty much sacrificed it ever getting bigger domestically than it did with that one.

If the 4th one really is going to come out it's going to be based on how strong the OS markets go.

Yeah. It's starting to feel like Abrams has really Lukified Kirk's character in this series.

That's great cause the work has already been done. I've watched Trek so I don't need to see the details.

I'm just pissed seeing Star Wars making so much of it's property but Trek isn't doing the same. I appreciate the old timeline but let's just stick to one. I feel like it's becoming too insular.

Maybe the next movie would feature an unknown new alien species as the villains in which no one knows their language and Uhura has to figure it out and decipher it or else they're ****ed.

Seems like in a world of franchises of superheroes, Star Wars, Fast and Furiouses, and Transformers, this one just doesn't have enough coolness to it anymore.
