Star Trek Beyond - Part 3

So because YOU seemingly don't like it, they need to "ditch this version". Ignoring the fact that pretty much everyone else outside of the Trekkie community seems to really enjoy it.

Got it.

Where did I say I don't like or maybe stop and actually read what i said?

I said "now that this timeline is established" as lets tell new stories in this timeline instead of "wow, this is just like TOS" redux over and over again. Exactly like the Ultimate Universe devolved into.

Let's see the larger repercussions of nuKirk and the Federation without the restrains of TOS.

If they were actually going to go and do something with the Vulcans being wiped out or Uhura and Spock's relationship being substantial, I'd love it. But for now, it's all window-dressing to just relive TOS.

People have to put the box office in perspective. All of these reboot films made far more than any of the previous incarnations. I think there is a ceiling for this franchise as Star Trek has always been kind of "nerdy" and had trouble crossing demographic boundries for movie goers, which is ironic when the theme's of Star Trek have always been universal and crossing ethnic boundaries.

I think nuTrek has potential but I think it needs to branch out. Similar to how Rogue One got a lot of hype from being different from the main series.

I think people just feel like they know what to expect from Trek. Ships, aliens, space so it's hard to get non-sci-fi people's attention.

Really enjoyed this, seemed to have a lot of the heart and fun that Into Darkness was missing for me despite having everyone in pretty dire situations the entire movie.

Justin Lin is quickly becoming one of my favorite action directors, even if Fast 6 was meh for me. Even had the same Superman moment! Gotta get this guy another action tent pole.

I might actually see this twice in theaters. I usually never do that

I thought it was great. I actually feel this should have been the second film after Star Trek 09, as it makes a better follow up story to that film than STID did imo.

Just saw it! I think it's a great movie! Maybe the best nu-Trek movie to date. :)

A complete alien villain and/or a villain without a revenge motivation

I'd like to see a conflict that eventually works out to be the Klingon/Federation Alliance. Something along the lines of Khitomer, but doesn't have to be exactly that obviously.....I guess it doesn't have to be Klingons. As long as it's not the Ferengi.

I also watched this today and I though it was great. I've been a huge fan of the new Trek films and I'm happy to see that this turned out as well as it did given the turmoil that surrounded it. I eagerly await a fourth film.

Awesome, but not quite as awesome as it could have been. Felt they could have handled Krall a little better. 7.5/10.

I think Star Trek Beyond is a very good film. I'm surprised that it is.

I didn't even dislike Into Darkness but Beyond was definitely a step up. I felt engaged, charmed and uplifted. It's the Trekiest Star Trek out of the new series. I can't help but agree that this should have been the follow up to Star Trek 2009.

I also liked Into Darkness, but I agree this is the better followup, and what's funny and somewhat ironic is that after gaining the creative freedom of creating an alternate timeline to do any story they could possibly do without being beholden to the existing canon, the first thing they did was try to do a remake of Wrath of Khan.

Like I said, I did really like Into Darkness, and I'll practically see anything with Benedict Cumberbatch as he's such a terrific actor, but I certainly get those that thought less of it, or those that even outright hated it.

What made the original series of Trek so great was they had some of the best science fiction writers of the day working on scripts for the show. Back then many science fiction writers would get short pieces in Reader's Digest, or other selective magazines, and Star Trek gave them another outlet for their work. So you would get story lines that were all over the map.

As I've said before this story is very much a throwback to science fiction of the 1950's mixed with Lin's ability to do exciting action films. I don't know that there's anything particularly groundbreaking in this film, but it sure is pretty damn refreshing, especially in a year where a lot of big films were pretty disappointing.

I thought Krall was the weakest baddie out of all the villains.

Yeah it's not groundbreaking but I thought it did what it did well.

I really really enjoyed this. My expectations were low after getting burned by Into Darkness but my doubts were unfounded here.

They finally did it. They delivered something that really delivered on the promise of the rebooting the franchise. The 2009 film spent time putting the pieces in place and this film finally makes use of them to make something just truly feels like an extension of the original series.

In the last decade we've had a lot of reboots and prequels of old franchises but the real frustrating trend is that so many of the sequels don't just move on from the prequelizing. They re-establish characters, be it Jim Kirk or James Bond and at the point we should be able to just move on and get new stories...but instead they spend the sequels continuing to drag out the origin story. "Oh NOW he's the James Bond we know and love...no wait NOW!" This film finally gets to a place where Kirk feels like Kirk and especially Spock feels like Spock. The writers here, unlike Orci and Kurtzman, know that you can show Spock having a conflict without having him scream and punch people.

The Motion Picture and the later series have kind of made people forget how much the original series was mostly about the characters and a general vibe of optimism and humanism rather than even really the science fiction at play. This film really delivers on that.

Obviously the York Town is huge and all that but the scope of this film really felt paired down in a necessary way. People use "feel like an episode" as a criticism for Insurrection but here it really does feel like the most well budgeted episode of the show. The rescue mission, and the villains real background and the doubling down on the ideals of the Federation (and the franchise itself) really could be an episode...which is great in a world where we aren't getting any Star Trek episodes.

I will say a lot of the thunder of seeing the Enterprise destroyed is really stolen from the fact that we've seen many Enterprises destroyed and even the last film before this featured the Enterprise falling out of the sky on its poster.

This is definitely the best of these new films and among the
best of the Star Trek films.

I've heard that a 4th film has already been more or less announced. Before seeing this I had hoped this might just wrap this up so we can just get back to business with the new Trek show this January. But now I just hope Lin and the writers stay on. This is the film we should have gotten second. What's great is that Into Darkness can literally be entirely ignored. You can draw a direct line of character development for everyone in this back to the first film with the second film contributing nothing. It isn't referenced at all and everything is better for it.

Damn this film is refreshing.

I'll give it an 8 out of 10.

I admit I was quite lost when it came to Krall for much of the film but they brought it around by the end.

I think this film does a good job of showing how the different circumstances of this Kirk's life and his father's legacy effect him. There are doubts we see with this Kirk that maybe we didn't see with the Shatner version until the later films.

They could go into the repercussions of a destroyed Vulcan but its hard to explore in terms of films. In a show you can have a more Spock focus episode or arc. In general destroying Vulcan just wasn't a great idea.

I was disappointed that:

Carol Marcus wasn't there, nor was she mentioned even.

But that's one of my few relatively minor critiques of the film.

It allows for Into Darkness to be completely disregarded so I'll allow it.

Not me. One, I like that film. Two, I like that character. And three, it's lazy and doing that has always bugged me in both film and TV shows.

I loved this movie! My favorite film in this trilogy, easily. Ill probably watch it again in theaters.

My only have two complaints.

1. The cinematography was a bit too dark at times. It definitely wasn't a theater issue because the outdoor day scenes were fine. But the Commodore's office scene at night, the subterranean tunnels, the Enterprise bar scene, and some other moments were just too dark. Yes, they are meant to be dark, but the actors weren't lit well at times. Other than that I liked the cinematography. The lack of len's flares was a definite improvement.

2. My other complain is that at times the camera was moving so much and was so close to the action and the editing was so quick that I had trouble telling who was hitting who and what the hell was going on.

The characters took center stage and all got just the right amount of love which was a big improvement over JJ's films. Bones was ****ing fantastic in this film. I really really really want Jaylah to at least be a recurring character. She was so sweet and badass and likeable. And Krall and the third act reveal [BLACKOUT]and his story actually tugged on my heart strings some. [/BLACKOUT]

All in all I was very very pleased. Well done Lin, Pegg, Jung, cast and crew! Y'all knocked the 50th anniversary film out of the park.

9.5/10

I saw it yesterday, loved it. I wasn't surprised to see the enterprise destroyed, but I did expect to see a upgraded new ship, look wise anyway.
It would have been cool to see it look more like TMP or WOK enterprise at the end.
Overall 8.5/10.

I thought this was pretty solid and the action sequences were thrilling. People clapped at the end of the movie. The throwback to the original cast was nice. However, the "realistic look" of the film was a bit jarring... I mean if it was unintentional for them, to have a lot of scenes dim-lit, then the shaky cameras, then eh. I thought it made the film look cheaper and the set (the villain's HQ) during the final act, looked really like sets, I felt like they had a smaller budget compare to the last two and I would have preferred better lighting and there were noticeable CGI works in the film like from the start. The villain was meh just as the villains for Star Trek 2009 and Into Darkness. But whatever, the main cast carried the film.

I don't really want to watch it again in a cinema, I feel like waiting for the home media release but this is the last blockbuster film of Anton Yelchin and his indie films aren't being screened in a cinema from where I live, so I might watch it again in a theater.

Carol Marcus is non character in Into Darkness. Everything that film offers would have just dragged this one down.

Every bit of character development in this film just picks up where the first film left off and it is stronger for it.

As an aside, my fiance has offered up the head-cannon that Spock's parents are connoisseurs of vintage Beastie Boys and Spock himself is actually named after the line in Intergalactic.

So, any WW predictions? I say, around $500 million.

The new Enterprise-A had some significant design changes. The nacelles were further apart, the saucer edges were angled instead of perpendicular, there was a ridge running from behind the bridge bubble on top of the saucer with some red on it and some other minor changes give it an overall sharper profile than the first Enterprise.
