I believe avatar holds the record to fastest billion 17 days.

As for whether TDK transcended any genres, it was the first major comic book blockbuster type film that was considered legitimate awards caliber cinema. I mean it affected the oscars, its the reason the academy expanded best film nomination from 5 to 10 the year after tdk came out.

That's almost as sad as the academy making a little genre for animated features. Next they'll be making a best motion capture performance category.

So, the new excuse of the nolanites to counter Avengers tremendous success is that it doesn't ''transcend'' the genre...

Nah its just one of the arguments a lot of overzealous batman fans use to put down Marvel Studios films when trying to tell us film-ignorant folks why TDK is so heavenly and so much better than the bland cookie-cutter crap Marvel puts out every year..:whatever:

no films transcend their genre, because if you take a horror film and add comedy and mystery, it does not transcend the genre of horror, it simply becomes a horror/comedy/mystery and THAT is its genre

^ Thanks! :woot:

And wow, 10 years? I feel old now. :csad:

And where are those posters going on about superheroes/comicbooks movies fatigue?
They were all over Thor, Cap and Ironman 2 threads the past 2 years.

The people who argued in earlier parts of this thread that the movie had no chance at a billion will be the same ones who act as though this movie making a billion is no big deal.

People are funny that way

I'm sure they'll use the "transcending" argument to try to marginalized TA in the future.

Taking my little cousins on Saturday, and going with a bunch of friends midnight. At this point I think the only question is does it catch Potter 8.

I think 180 million OW is in the ball park. Should be a good 80 million next weekend. Finishing anywhere from 1.2-1.4 billion in all likelihood.

I'll say 1.278 billion WW. I think that is slightly conservative but a good estimate.

Detractors are so predictable :whatever:

The minute Fox get's some creative talent behind FF(and they may just have), the likes of Whedon, then they've got a mega property on their hands. Tim Story lol.

Blaming Tim Story again? The man is a capable film maker. Lets not kid ourselves and now say that FOX is blameless along with the writers. Tim Story was brought on board to shoot the movie. He had little say in the direction of the film. That was all FOX. Story's latest film "Think Like A Man" has been number 1 for 2weeks with a budget of 12mil and lessor screen count at around 2000 and it got d@mn near all positive reviews. It is very good and the man can juggle and give development to numerous characters. He did it with Barbershop to. That film was a hit too. Taxi was mediocre and another film he was brought on to shoot and little say. People here at these sites dismissed Story as a black film maker of black movies and blamed him for the mediocre F4 films.

The director of F4 was black? There's something I didnt know.
BTW, 260 million so far. :)

The director of Fantastic Four was black?

I did not know that, that's even more shocking than the guy who plays Thanos being black.

I still don't understand why Fox wants to hold on to the FF rights, even though the previous two FF movies were crap and were disappointing both critically and financially. I guess they just don't want to give them up and would rather risk another tens of million dollars for another go rather than letting Marvel have the rights back.

You can give up hope that FOX is gonna let them rites go back to Marvel for F4 and Xmen while we're on the subject, i've said it before, Marvel is gonna have to pry them rites away from Fox's cold dead hands. As for a F4 being a financial failure well that's not case. The movie, well both of them turned a profit. FOX didn't loose one red cent. Both films had budgets about 120-140 mil and both grossed in the ballpark of 400 million WW. When you add in DVD sales and rentals neither F4 and F42 flopped. This has been discussed before and someone gave a link to box office totals and budgets a while back. The F4 has been profitable for FOX. Sure neither film made 600 million and beyond but they made enough for them to see they better hold on to them rites.

Silver Surfer may have a chance of going back to Marvel. It doesn't look like a plan is in motion of doing a SS movie.

Very aggressive figures here.
These days, anything could happen.

wow love the avy.
Now that's the type of stuff that I was hoping to see from thor all along.

Not sure how the whole black thing figures in, myself being African, I personally couldn't care less. Story being brought on for both the first and the second begs the question of just how much creative control he had. Let's not kid ourselves here and act like he was in a Bret Ratner position(X3). If he was brought on simply as a shooter, he did poor job, one of his better moments being the trailer footage from FF2. The rest, no so much. In fact it often looked made for TV.

Story coming from Barbershop is precisely what I see in FF's failures. It lacked the real scope of the genre, it's focused on rather group banter set ups and i'll staged set pieces(see final bout). The casting aside, because Fox has never let a director of their genre material cast their own actors(I doubt this). I just don't think he was the man for the job. I'm of the mind that writers tend to get away scott free in these discussions, but even from a visual stand point he added nothing(I've seen better achieved with far less). He's more suited to these other projects that see him enjoying moderate success.

Lastly, I'm more interested in numbers then I am a film's ability to open and hold the top spot. That's almost always a matter of who it's opening and competing against. I doubt even Avengers could open at number one if a batman film was around(or vice versa). What James Cameron's films do with their numbers is amazing, but I'd love to see his films pull that off in the middle of the summer season(Nolan should have really gave a winter release a shot). He made a solid comedy that performed well(really well) with just about nothing else around to give it any real trouble. Just two weeks earlier and it probably wouldn't have been top anything. And of course two weeks later...Not taking anything away from it, if anything he does very strong work with that material.

As much as I'm not a fan of the MS approach(till now), Silver Surfer would be awesome in a Whedon built Avengers film.

I've got my 14 (yes 14) IMAX tickets in hand for Friday and that's just the "family" portion of my weekend fun!

Me and a friend are paying to see it at Midnight just to check out crowds and maybe the start of the film. Why watch it all at once right? Draw it out, savor it and pad the box office at the same time. That's my battle plan anyway...
