Action-Adventure The 'Back To The Future' Appreciation Thread - Part 2

The first one is one of my top 5 fave movies ever. Didn't like the second one, too dark. The third one was much closer to the first and a good wrap up.

Generally speaking a lot of sequels are darker than the first, going in the style of the Empire strikes Back and the Two Towers.

It seems the general opinion is people love the first one, aren't crazy about the second one, and like the third one.

For myself, I would say the trilogy probably has the biggest drop off of enjoyment for me than any trilogy that quickly comes to mind because I love the first one. One of my favorites. The other two I don't watch anymore.

But there's no way to continue the franchise unless you have Marty's son become a time traveler like his father but even so...or you have Doc's sons Jules and Verne become the time travelers instead

I preferred the original Jennifer, Claudia Wells to Elizabeth Shue.

It's a shame she couldn't come back because of her mother's health.

I'd say the original had the perfect cast. They even lost Crispin Glover for the sequels.

well Claudia Wells did the voice of Jennifer in the Back to the Future video game

It's a shame Michael J Fox can't voice any video game versions now. I saw him on Designated Survivor the other day. He doesn't sound very intelligible when he speaks now, and it's hard to understand what he's saying. That's the toll that Parkinson's has taken on him.

Is the second and third worth a shot ? I finished the first about 2months ago and it was absolutely brilliant.

Having seen only 1 film for each of BTTF and Indiana Jones franchise, I think the 1st BTTF dated much better than Raiders of The Lost Ark

You should definitely watch the entire trilogy. The original is a classic which is hard to live up to, but the second and third ones are still good films. When seen all together, it's a great story. The 2nd one is clever how it references the first one.

I liked the second one and how it played with the timeline of the first one. It was a little disappointing they didn’t spend more time in the future but I always get a smile when Marty runs out 10 seconds after Doc sends the other Marty back to his present.

Even though I don't like 2 and 3, you should definitely give them a shot if you enjoyed the first one.

Having got over the shock of you not seeing them :woot:, yes, absolutely, they are worth seeing, but each film is very different to each other in style & approach. One of the most complete trilogies ever made.

I still really like the sequel. Haven't seen the third one in years but always preferred it to the third.

As a kid Part II was actually my favourite for a while.

What I love about the trilogy is that it covers everything you can do with time travel in this contained environment: present, past, an even further past, future and alternate reality. It checks all the boxes. They don't pull the same trick twice, each sequel had something different.
Revisiting the first movie from a different angle is just genius. The first one will always be the best, but as sequels go (and we know how bad sequels can be), what they did with both parts is kind of amazing. They managed to use time travel wisely without losing what made the first one so special. I think as a trilogy is perfect.

Same, actually. I've seen both in theaters over the past 6 months or so with Flashback Cinema. Hopefully they plan on showing the third soon

I agree with EVERYTHING you said :awesome:

lol, I don’t understand why people have a problem with 2&3? The entire trilogy is amazing. I love them all. When I was younger, 2 was my favorite, The I got older, and I was a hard 1, but 3 has been growing on me a LOT.

Just a great trilogy. You can’t go wrong with any of them.

Same here. I love all three of them!

Never really got all the dislike for Part II, despite tinkering with a lot of the same ground from the original. I guess the original movie's the "best" in an objective sense, but neither of the two films following it up seemed to have any drop-off in quality to me.

What makes this trilogy are the characters. 2 & 3 are probably inferior (in terms of structure and plot, respectively) but Doc and Marty are so likeable and endearing they carry the films by themselves. Personally, I love 2, and thought the use of time travel to revisit the first film's events was a stroke of genius. I'm a bit more tepid about the third one (not the biggest fan of the setting) but, as said, I think it concluded the characters' story very well.

Just finished the second. It's entertaining but certainly not as good as 1. The plot is much more ambitous but the first one is just better written and executed. The acting is the only thing I don't like about this movie. So fecking cheesy and atrocious. Especially the guy who plays Biff and Griff.

Overall the first 2 of this trilogy is so damn good and entertaining.

PS: Off-topic: I enjoy SW Original Trilogy and this Trilogy but can;t understand why I don't like Raiders of The Lost Ark. I mean it's not because the movie is old (apparently I like Star Wars OT and Back To The Future).

Thought Thomas F. Wilson swore off Back to the Future events (thus his lack of appearances during the promotion for the 30th anniversary). Nice to see him embracing it again.

Yes. I think he said during the event that he had not seen Michael J Fox in more than 20 years. It was hard to listen to, but I think that's what he said.

The first film was just awesome. 2&3 were a nice continuation of the first, even though they didn't capture all of the same awe. I was obsessed with there being real hover boards when I was a kid. I think Zemekis trolled everyone in an interview back in the day.

Now that all the films take place in the past, it would be interesting for the 4th film to explore why the future Marty saw didn't come to pass.
