But, Joker got to wear war paint.
Permawhite, darnit!
Am I the only one hoping they do away with the eye makeup?
I honestly think that they need to start acknowledging it in the film, or just do away with it all together. Preferably the latter.
There are ways they can get the "white eyed" look without using eye makeup.
It depends what you mean by doing away with the makeup. If the eyelids and surrounding flesh are left uncovered, I think it looks really unsatisfactory. The illusion of the man-monster completely shatters, and you are left with the resemblance to a Halloween costume.
Sculpted eye sockets and white lenses/goggles seems like a good idea in theory, but it would probably completely remove the actors ability to be expressive with his eyes, and might lead to the weird bug-eyed look we got in TDK. I realise that a good actor can do the job with his upper face (
Dredd) or even his whole face (
V for Vendetta) covered, but Batman is an exceptional case, where his eyes are implicitly visible. You expect them to be doing something.
Given the problems emanating from Bruce needing to wipe black boot polish off his face, I personally think that the compromise of the actor wearing unacknowledged face paint is probably the best solution. I think the costume designers on
B89 probably knew what they were doing: the approach has lasted for seven movies and over twenty years, and I'm sure different solutions have been attempted in that time.
You could always white out the pupils and iris in post-production- that may be the way to go.
