The Daily Planet - Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

I think it'd be a missed opportunity not to tell a Superman story that looks at journalism at the moment.
The nature of news and the role of reporters is a major issue around the world right now, trust in "the media" is falling and journalist are being persecuted and even killed across the planet.
And here we have a character who is a symbol of truth and justice recognised around the world, the two main characters are journalists. It's a perfect set up.

Also the terrifying rise in xenophobia and that people are looking to a xenophobic billionaire who demonizes aliens and became President as their idol. It has President Lex Luthor written all over it. Lex wouldn’t be able to be President, but could be like a Dick Cheney - the puppet master pulling a President’s strings to get them to hate and fear Superman as well as other alien beings.

I was thinking earlier in the gym, similar to you, that the real story, as it were, was Clark, Lois and Jimmy, in the Planet, stopping crime via their work. The risks are so very real these days when the public are hidden from real news and pointed towards celeb apps/channels.

I thought of approaching a superman film like this - the protagonists are Clark Kent, Lois Lane. Lois is strong, smart and attractive and throughout the movie we can't help but be in awe of her, we care about her. She's not in your face, but you appreciate her work. Clark is split into 2 people, private Clark Kent, smallville, his apartment, moments at work where he steps up, he is a strong character and we like him, but the flip side is we also see a side of Clark at work, where, with clever writing, direction, we see him as low key in public, in the office, the editing room, meetings, he is a side character. It will take good writing and a competent director, but in most scenes, he is in lois's shadow but we see more of him throughout the movie and realise he purposely steps back and lois notices this too as their relationship grows - basically clark can hold his own and is this mysterious figure, way more to him.

Superman - we never see, when he is on screen, the event from his perspective, always from others. Sure, he gives good dialogue, but it's almost at us, not with us. It's almost as if Superman and Clark are seperate Characters, what i mean by this, as an example - int he planet there is a scene, lois is talking to perry and our attention is on them, clark is in the background, if you are watching him, you see him twitch or react to a noise, like a dog hearing a whistle and he leaves the room - now we obviously know, but it's understated - then someone calls in and says turn on the tv - they do - it's a fire down town - news team are there and superman appear - we see the tv monitor and the events and it's cool - the scen cuts and we are there, in the fire, superman doing his thing - cuts back to lois and perry watching and screaming at jimmy and clark to get down there but clark is no where, then as the news anchor closes up as superman left, clark walks in with a coffee and lois gives him this look and Perry swallows a few tablets and makes a comment.

I would also take inspiration from lois and clark - have lois in trouble - clark try to save her but he gets held at gun point and held hostage with her too - jsut before things get tricky, clark is like, ok enough of this and gets lois out of there.

The overal message for the film, clark is who he is, superman is what he can do.

I'd do a solo lex film, from childhood to adult hood. Show what makes him tick, how he becomes the head of lexcorp, and his hatred of superman.
We would see it all from the point of view of lex, with little superman scenes ( other than see what lex sees on TV and from online footage )

You could introduce a new superman this way, without really committing to any one actor.

Lex would be Bryan Cranston.

It's an interesting idea but would it have enough GA appeal? Even with a name like Cranston's attached?

It probably wouldnt have a super high budget, so that wouldn’t matter as much.

This^. There shouldn't be any need for close up scenes of superman saving or fighting anyone, hence a lower FX budget.
This would be a Lex film with little time spent on superman.
All the superman scenes would be seen from a distance, ie, TV, internet, lex looking out from his tower and seeing supes fly by, etc.
Except for one. Toward the end I'd want superman hovering outside lexcorp. He and lex would have a stare off for long moments.

So are we still uncertain on Cavill's future? I keep seeing articles saying Affleck and Cavill are done.

I see lots of comments around the web saying 'Of course they're done' but all I've heard officially is a deafening silence on both.

I think it's still undecided. Reckon WB aren't planning any Superman films right now, and will keep Cavill as a possibility until they make up their mind about what to do with the character.

That Variety article about The Flash confirmed that he and Affleck are done.

They strung routh along for a couple of years till it was obvious no sequel was happening.
I suspect the same with this, they'll not be any sequel. It will die with a whimper

I know I'm not alone in having seen this coming.

I see where they come from. They aren't (and shouldn't be) confident about more movies. It's a lot of money thrown away with false starts and failure to build a franchise.

The thing is: should a tv series be made? I don't know. I'm more confident about Supergirl actually having a movie. It's a bit sad, if that happens, to see this inversion happening: superman being relegated to the small screen and supergirl getting an upgrade to the big screen.

If this is true, I can see both positives and negatives about it.

It will be good to see Superman have time to develop on TV, with time for Metropolis and its characters to be developed. That being said, it should've been done in the movies after MOS, with a movie budget...

This could be a chance for a Superman TV show to really focus on using the comic book lore and mythology, villains etc. that is pure Superman. Rather than something like 'Lois & Clark' or 'Krypton' (which weren't primarily focused on Superman.) The George Reeves TV series didn't really use much of the comic book characters.

If successful, this renewed interest in Superman can create hype for a movie, as the Supergirl TV show seems to be doing now for the Supergirl movie.

Yes. Smallville was on air for 10 years, 10 seasons. Lois & Clark ended on 4 seasons 3 years before that.
Supergirl since 2015 got criticized for ripping off his material- being a reporter, genderflipped supporting cast, etc. Her last big screen foray was 1984.
It's time.

It'd certainly be a reversal, having Supergirl front and centre on the big screen whilst Superman fills a weekly spot on (I'm assuming) the CW.

Could be. Are Supergirl's view ratings in CW any good?
There's a ratings thread on the Supergirl forum. I've had a quick scan (it's 40 odd pages) and they look pretty good. The most recent entry (from LL2K2) is,

The CW's return to Sunday night programming appears to have been a success. The season premiere of Supergirl and the series premiere of Charmed had almost identical preliminary numbers of 0.5/2 and 1.53 million viewers. The figures for Supergirl are similar to the Season 3 premiere a year ago (0.53/1.9 million):

TV Ratings Sunday: ‘Charmed’ premieres well, ‘Shark Tank’ ticks up

Nice! So there's some solid ground where they can build a new series.
Oh, absolutely. The popularity of the Supergirl show and the hugely favourable reception that Hoechlin's Superman has had so far (plus a lot of fandom already asking for a Supes show) should provide a great foundation for a series

Is the guy from Supergirl playing Superman in the TV series? I honestly have not watched Supergirl, so I know nothing of his portrayal of the character. What's the general consensus of him?

I'm just now catching up with Flash/Arrow/Legends. Now adding Titans in the mix. Lord.

Tyler Hoechlin's been a huge success. Fans love him and his interpretation of the character. They've been clamoring for Hoechlin to get his own Supes show pretty much since he first appeared.

The only complaint, that I've seen a lot, is that Supergirl is more powerful than him.
