The Daily Planet - Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

Why the extreme skepticism? It is a fact that we had a scooper last fall say that the movie's story involves Lex Luthor creating a Superman clone called Ultraman in the movie. A scoop which Gunn did not debunk in his usual direct manner.

Nine months later, we get set photos of a big dude in a full face mask with a big U on his chest manhandling Superman.

Now we are getting some slightly unusual actions on set like a crowd scene where the crowd reacts weirdly to Superman and he shuffles off walking funny or alternatively him stopping mid-flight to talk to a squirrel.

Naturally, we could be wrong, but it is more unreasonable and illogical to consider those who suspect a clone/Bizarro storyline crazy or without any basis for their theory.

Also, how is shooting these potential Bizarro scenes an obvious spoiler? Clearly the public are far enough away that we don't know for certain.
I mean you guys "figured it out" rather quickly ;)

My skepticism is not necessarily extreme, it just doesn't track in my head. I try and play it out and I can't make it make sense. Every way makes it into a complete mess at some point in the story and I just don't see them taking any real chances on this particular film. But as I said, I am not very creative so there is just as likely a chance I am wrong AND it will work as I am that I am right. I personally don't see it.

Like I said though it is an intriguing idea...but I fear the outcome in a major way.

Why does green lantern wear mostly white in this? Like I've seen all of his comics outfits.... We'll at least Gunn is keeping with all the superheros are wearing motorcycle jackets....
Corporate uniform worn by the JLI.

But Superman 2 is a sequel so we had time with both Superman and Clark before he loses his powers and runs off with Lois. Plus, we were following the machinations of the villains so we were occupied elsewhere. That can work in a second film, but will feel off in the first film.

And just because it isn't called Legacy anymore doesn't really change the point. I doubt the story changed when the title did. And I just don't see Gunn telling some side story with a SuperClone and making it work in the way you have it set up. It is too messy, and I can see the criticisms coming a mile away even before people watch it. It would make more sense if the Clone was a reveal much later on hence him wearing the Black Suit when they arrest Superman. I dunno it just feels completely disjointed and out of place in the first movie of a franchise.

But we shall see :)
Ultraman and Bizarro would be the villain.

When Gunn finished, he changed the name. For a reason. What that is, we don't know. We don't even know what legacy means in this context.

Do you think I think the Clone is in it from the start as Superman? I don't. I think he grabs Clark's suit in the second/third act, after Clark is arrested.. At least right now.

Then just be nice to the people who are trying to come up with theories to entertain everyone else and pass the time between now and release! :hehe:
I am in no way trying to be mean...I hate when I come off that way it is a major flaw in my ability to communicate even in person. I apologize if I came off as anything but having fun with this discussion :)

I have literally had all these thoughts. I'm just trying not to vocalise them because I'm really HOPING none of it is true.

I'm not a fan of Bizzaro at all, and I especially don't wanna see him in a 1st movie of the franchise.
I get you. I’m not a fan either, but I suspect IF this is Bizarro, it’s some sort of Ultraman/Bizarro/Nuclear Man hybrid scenario that will be a uniquely Gunn character and bear little resemblance to to versions that came before.

I think it works in terms of the legacy angle in that it is meta-commentary about how there is only one real Superman. You can't replace him, etc.

Even with the current theories, my guess is the reveal is latter on. It's not like we are following the Clone for some long period or something. It could be a short montage of him trying to be Superman before he is shunned by the Public and lashes out as a result.

The main reason I buy into Ultraman/Bizarro, beyond the big masked dude on set, is the theoretical utility of such a "villain" is it keeps Lex hands off for a flick (though he could always power suit up), while giving Clark and the other heroes someone to deal with. Him tossing around the other heroes works well. Also, if this Superman suddenly "buys in" to working with that group, another nice little dynamic.
That is not bad actually...I think it works better (personally) if that happens later in the film though. And the Ultraman idea I think works better than Bizzaro.

Nope, your smilies definitely help convey your tone. It just felt like a lot of people dumping on those with actual theories lately. :funny:

Ugh, but those guys suck too... 😤
You’re ignoring the “but uniquely Gunn that won’t bear much resemblance to what’s come before” part, which feels pretty key. :funny: Gunn likes to do his own thing with the more obscure characters. Could be good or bad, but I don’t think any of those could actually be used as a real reference point if that’s what he’s doing.
