The "Keep Hope Alive" (that the rights can revert back to Marvel) thread - Part 10

Considering the number of non-FF fans who actually think this trailer looks good, I fear that this movie will at least make it's money back and FOX will keep on raping the FF.

Really? You know that for sure?

Because they are making their movies "Gritty and grounded." Duh! What's grounded about a guy eating planets or riding a surfboard to different worlds? :whatever:

I feel like Fox struggles with solo characters since the various X-Teams and the FF are really packaged together. They won't relinquish Silver Surfer.

What I feel that Fox will do is offer up rights to share the Shi'Ar and Brood so both studios can use them. The FF seldom interact with them and the X-Men have plenty of stories that don't involve the Shi'Ar at all. I mean we've had 7 X-Men films and no sign of the Shi'Ar at all. None. Marvel wants to make Ms. Marvel a thing. She benefits from the Shi'Ar. Marvel will presumably want to do a cosmic crossover between the Inhumans and Guardians. They benefit from the Shi'Ar. The Brood have much stronger ties to Ms. Marvel than they do to the X-Men in addition to the potential of seeing them face off against the Guardians.

Marvel get to expand their cosmic universe with an entire new multi-species empire and Gigeresque monstrosities. Fox gets to do X-Factor.

Is the reverse true? Could Marvel do a live tv-version of the X-Men? That would be hilarious if they could and did. "Hey, FOX, you can't have your X-Men tv show but thanks for the idea!"

No. Marvel needs Fox's approval as well.

Wait I thought Fox owned the X-Men TV rights?

Technically, Fox don't really 'own' anything Marvel, but they apparently have airtight contracts that allows them to keep the live action movie rights for the X-Men & FF as long as they want, as long as they keep meeting whatever the deadlines are between flicks. It seems they can do whatever they hell they want with the movies too.

For a TV series Marvel cannot do a live action one for X-Men or FF, but Fox can, however they will need Marvel to agree to it as live action tv rights are not automatically granted by Fox's contracts (contract details do confirm that*), hence the apparent negotiations.

*This detail was perhaps the closest thing we are ever likely to see about these contracts, coming out in the court paper rulings after the Mutant X case ruling. Fox have the live action rights for 'theatrical release movies', but Marvel retained the right for permission to any TV shows to be made.

Fox seem to want the X-Series big time so I would think the Mouse is gonna want a good deal in return. I cannot see it being a rights reversion for the FF, but they could end up getting a good few supporting characters back (like Galactus and the Surfer, The Watcher etc, who, going by the trailer, wouldn't fit in well with Trank's FF anyway).

I can't imagine Marvel ever taking that deal. They would be giving up the TV rights for peanuts. If I was Marvel and Fox offered that I'd hang up on them.

The Shi'Ar and the Brood. :funny:

You mean an Inhumans/Guardians crossover and two Ms. Marvel sequels with a setup for a third? That's not peanuts.

Plus the Shi'Ar will open up Marvel to launch Darkhawk who right now is in Limbo with neither Marvel nor Fox able to use him. The Sony deal fell through so Marvel lacks the rights to Spider-Man but Darkhawk could work as the teen hero who becomes an Avenger.

So you get three movie sequels (one of which has the potential to score 1.5 billion) and a new film franchise.

Explain to me how this is a one-sided deal that favors Fox? And explain to me why War of Kings wouldn't be profitable?

And I'd sacrifice Fox's cut of merch. Fox doesn't care too much to commission merch since it didn't sell for the first two X-Men movies and I don't think there was any commissioned for the Tim Story FF films. Marvel doesn't want to produce it without Fox paying up since they have to give Fox half of what they make in royalties. Marvel makes money off the FF and X-Men movies. Fox gets brand exposure with no risk.

I just felt the merch rights were a given for any deal. Merch plus sharing the Shi'Ar and Brood in exchange for exclusive live-action TV rights.

The Shi'Ar and the Brood. :funny:

This is like one of those sports message boards in which posters propose trading three scrubs and a draft pick for another team's superstar. FOX makes millions with an X Men TV show and Marvel gets to put a bird lady in the background of GOTG 2 -which they can do anyway. Great deal!

Gunn had the Brood in his Guardians script, then did a search and replace with Sakaarans when he found they weren't available. Easily replaceable alien races are pretty much worthless.

1. That was the Badoon, not the Brood.

2. The Shi'Ar would give Marvel the right to use Deathbird in a Ms. Marvel sequel.

3. The Brood would also factor in to yet another Ms. Marvel sequel as the antagonists. Fox will probably never use the Brood. Marvel absolutely would.

4. Again, Darkhawk movie.

5. Guardians/Inhumans: War of Kings which has the potential to make a boatload of money, will probably gross $1.5M and may even gross $2M if Marvel is lucky.

6. Avengers: Galactic Storm

So that's six things that Marvel would get out of this. Fox just gets one TV show.

I bet a X-Men live action tv show would be a bunch of kids who don't have flashy powers wearing colorless costumes....wait, this sounds familiar.

I wonder what Feige's reaction was when he watched this trailer this morning. Probably just shook his head, closed his laptop and walked away.

I like to imagine him laughing and then snorting a half lb of diamond dust off a high class stripper through a tightly rolled $10,000 bill.

1. That was the Badoon, not the Brood.
Good catch!

2. The Shi'Ar would give Marvel the right to use Deathbird in a Ms. Marvel sequel.
The success of the CAPTAIN Marvel franchise won't be determined by the availability of Deathbird.

3. The Brood would also factor in to yet another Ms. Marvel sequel as the antagonists. Fox will probably never use the Brood. Marvel absolutely would.
If they had them, sure. Otherwise they would simply search and replace. Marvel certainly wouldn't pay to get them when they have dozens of alien races and can create new ones.

4. Again, Darkhawk movie.
We'll all be in the grave before that one is greenlit.

5. Guardians/Inhumans: War of Kings which has the potential to make a boatload of money, will probably gross $1.5M and may even gross $2M if Marvel is lucky.
Search and replace Shi'ar.

6. Avengers: Galactic Storm
Search and replace Shi'ar.

So that's six things that Marvel would get out of this. Fox just gets one TV show.

Those six things represent approximately zero dollars in new revenue for Marvel Studios. If you think FOX is going to get TV rights for your proposed package of crap, take another look at the deal they cut with Sony.

That's exactly what I fear as well. I'll be damned if I give this movie a single cent.

Marvel will care much more about increasing their profits from X-Men and FF films, merchandising, and a percentage of television profits than they will about using particular characters they can just replace with something else.

I think Marvel should make a deal with Fox for the following.

Fox gets approval for live action TV adaptations.

Marvel is allowed to use Dr. Doom, Galactus, Silver Surfer, Annihilus and the Absorbing Man as part of the MCU under the understanding that these characters are a part of the greater Marvel Universe.

Fox can still use them the same way they can use Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

So Marvel is free to give us a 500 metre tall Galactus, a chrome man on a board and the ruler of Latveria.

While Fox can go make whatever crap they want, be that an online forum troll doctor doom, a giant cloud Galactus or a bald pro surfer who huffs chrome paint or something.

Absorbing Man was a featured baddie in Agents of Shield. Creel is with Marvel.

Whoops I meant to write Molecule Man.

Yeah Absorbing man was actually done really well in Season 2 of shield.

Did Fox just license "Gotham" to Netflix for like 1.5 million per episode? If I was Marvel, I'll want THAT, including any syndication profits.

Syndication is where the money is. There is no point in Fox even doing the show if they give that up.

Though Perlmutter will want to wet his beak on revenue from the TV show, I doubt money alone will get this deal done. Marvel asked for Galactus and the Surfer as compensation for merely extending the Daredevil contract. So there's your starting point.
