The Official "Ask A Brotha" Thread - Part 3

An even bigger mess I'm watching MJ anniversary with Jackson 5 and they're performing I want you back, I'm convinced this isn't the real Michael Jackson. Something is off.

Prince vs Michael Jackson is harder than people give it credit. What couldn't prince do? Arguably a better dancer, a better singer, obviously a better musician, but he didn't have the longevity MJ had, but in the 80s prince to me made better music.

 Prince still puts out albums. Dude probably has 10x the albums Mike ever put out.

We get that I get meant good music. Maybe you like it, but I haven't liked many prince records since the 80s

Of course there are but do you all know any black people that hunt?

No one can tell me adele isn't influenced by black music

My point is a black artist can clearly can do this music and wouldn't have 1 quarter of this exposure. It's not fair.

Shes the female Eminem. Obviously more talented

My god does she have the most talented voice going today. I just wish she collaborated with black artist to pay back.

Well I said she could at least do a chorus on a rap sing with Jay z to show her respects

I haven't seen many homages that you speak of where she admitted this. If she did fine. I've been a fan of Adele when she made chasing pavements. I went to see her perform. Now I couldn't even afford a ticket to her concert. How about recognizing those before her now that's she no1. I just don't understand why you can't do a song with a hip hop artist the music that spawned what she was inspired by. It's not a big deal

I'm very confused by your logic.

Not to be insulting but i assume he was drunk. He was jumping from topic to topic saying random or illogical things

Don't think you offended anyone really. It was just bizarre to read

Just another day on the hype.

Plan B is a British white soul singer/rapper who deserves to be bigger than he is.

there is a lot of songs I hear on the radio that on first listen you'd think is a black chick but in reality is a blonde, blue eyed chick from the UK, haha.

It seems like most black British female singers have been doing the whole folk thing for the last few years. Corinne bailey rae, Lianne la havas and Josephine Oniyama. The Independent even did an article about it saying folk music is no longer the persevere of bearded white dudes.

So, I have a question. I've been making friends with some Jamaicans and Haitians from my work, and last couple of times, I've been invited to their parties where I am the only white girl/person there. And I am country girl type white. When the parties are closing near the end and we end up chilling outside by the cars, alot of the guys are impressed that not only did I come, but I actually mingled, drank, danced and ate the food.

So, brothers, what do you think of the white country girl that has no problem going to parties and participating in the culture and activities? Is it really that rare? And what if she is the only white person there, do you feel intimidated or feel like it's nice to see there are some open minded people left in the world?

I take it you are not privy to the "where da white women at" meme. :o

But seriously, we're pretty open about any woman joining the festivities.

exactly as Terry said and quite the contrary! white country girls usually dont go to parties unless "rascal flats" or "Little big town" is playing and theres no mechanical bull in the middle of the room!:cwink!
if they do we give them honorary afo-coolness points for that!!
it takes DMX street creed to show up a Afo-centric party and not feel imitated! of course there will be looks ( like the ones i get while attending "Mama- Mia")
but after all... deep down... we are all just people anyway!
Eveything's cool unless someone takes the CD out and start putting "Hank Williams jr" CD on that they brought!!
after all "You never touch a black's man radio or CD!:cwink:

Can Black people be racist? Or just prejudiced? Or is it just semantics?

I ask because recently Orange is the New Black (I don't watch the show) recently had a scene in which characters were discussing this. Some fans didn't like it, especially since they know that none of the writers for the show are Black.

And there's the whole "reverse racism" thing.

The scene (with parts missing due to language, but I typed it up)...

"I'm gonna have to call ******** on that."
tumblr_o92siocLo91t1628oo3_1280.jpg

"... like, put people in a ghetto, send them to ****** school..."

"But we sure as **** can be racist as everyone else, 'cause this is America."

Yes, we can be racist. But the unwritten rule is only we can call each other on it.

I once heard someone speaking on this, and he explained it more eloquently than I can but basically he was saying that minorities can't be racist in the sense of Indiscriminately abuse their power when it comes to race. So in effect, blacks will never be able to place themselves above any other group. They(We) will never be able to segregate or subjugate or oppress anyone else. That's what racism is.

Now if you're saying racist in the same vein as being prejudice or bigotry or simple stereotyping than obviously anyone can and in a small way, everyone does that.

I'll give an example of how every single Soldier in my unit had prejudged a guy who had just arrived in our unit. Now if you are an Asian-American serving in the U.S. Army you are highly likely to be stationed in Korea at some time in your career. For whatever reason it is what it is. We had a Staff Sergeant arrive whose last name was Kim. Kim is a very common Korean name so everyone assumed his lineage was Korean. Our Sergeant Major asked SSG Kim if he had family in Korea. His response was that he had no clue because he was adopted. Most people just assumed that if he were adopted, his adopted family would be either White, or Asian. He later revealed that his adoptive parents were Black. What are the odds? People w/o thinking about it generalized and stereotype people all of the time. My statement of Asian soldiers inevitably ending up in Korea isn't based on any factual evidence. It's just something I observed while in the military but still it's a borderline racist conspiracy theory. lol

Yeah, that's how I pretty much view it. It's the whole thing of simply looking at the dictionary definition compared to how it really works in society.

That's a pretty interesting story. Maybe the army thinks it's helpful in someway to have Asian Americans stationed there. Like how Hollywood likes to hire Asian actors to help sell films over there. And I'm not going to lie, I assume the dude's adoptive parents were White or Asian. :woot:

On a sort of side note, I highly recommend 30 for 30's OJ: Made in America. It's 5 parts so it'll take some time to get through. It's pretty fascinating and was a good example of how race works in the US and its effects on certain things. And a warning, they show pics from the evidence used in the case. I wasn't expecting it, so it threw me for a loop.

Yes, black people can be racist.

Just because calling someone a racist is more inflammatory than calling them bigoted or prejudiced doesn't mean people should all accept a "new definition" just because it gets harder and harder to defend black racists and just calling them what they are when appropriate.

Though unless you're like some hipster or have mostly black friends, I doubt some black chick calling you cracker is going to shut you down
