The Official "Ask A Brotha" Thread - Part 3

Are we forgetting rock music comes from Black people?

Please.

It was created by a white guy at a high school dance in California.

“Chuck! Chuck, it’s Marvin. Your cousin, Marvin Berry. You know that new sound you’re looking for? Well, listen to this!”

Strolling has now moved onto the US...

I just heard about "Strolling"...I gotta check it out.

It's a great series. Very interesting to see the perspectives of Black people in various countries.

I once read the funniest response to some White girl expressing her want of a mixed baby. Probably too much for this site. So, I'll just use this...

Subscribed. I like her already.

My point is a black artist can clearly can do this music and wouldn't have 1 quarter of this exposure. It's not fair.

My god does she have the most talented voice going today. I just wish she collaborated with black artist to pay back.

I mean...you can say that about so many things even taking race out of it. Yes, there is a racial component to it, but let's be real: a lot of people who are popular are not the best at her craft.

I love Beyonce, but I think Alicia Keys, for example, is a much better singer.
Drake is NOWHERE near the best rapper out but he arguably is the most popular.

The same can be said of other actors, musicians, what have you.

Also, I mean what do people want Adele to do? Not take her fame/fortune? And "payback" I dont see why she has too. I mean isn't her paying back making music that is influenced by them. And I dont think she collabs with artists that much anyway. Just doesnt seem like her thing
And ADele is nowhere near as blatant or disrespectful as an Iggy.

There are problems facing blacks in entertainment and not getting their due, but Adele imo is not one of them or is so low on this list.

Well I said she could at least do a chorus on a rap sing with Jay z to show her respects

Well, that's your opinion. If you borrow ultimately you have to pay something

You're logic doesn't make much sense.
1) Why should she pay homage or do a track with Jay Z? She's not a rapper she's not clearly influenced by rap.
2) She's said she's been influenced by Beyonce, Destiny's Child, and Aaliyah.
3) By your logic everyone who has rapped should hop on a song with the first rappers? Every black male singer should try and do a song with Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, etc? Or everyone who made a dark, mature TV show should somehow collaborate with the creators of SOpranos?

Just be respectful, don't act like you weren't influenced, and do you.

I think that's so petty-like to expect her to collaborate as payback. What is that?

There is so many important things then "Adele doesn't collab with black artists". That's just ridiculous

white people that do stuff black people are known for excelling at will always get more attention. Sometimes it's a gimmick, sometimes they were just influenced or grew up around it. Like Eminem, he pretty much was raised in the hood, so he gets a pass. Right now the only people doing the best American r&b are white brits ironically.

I haven't seen many homages that you speak of where she admitted this. If she did fine. I've been a fan of Adele when she made chasing pavements. I went to see her perform. Now I couldn't even afford a ticket to her concert. How about recognizing those before her now that's she no1. I just don't understand why you can't do a song with a hip hop artist the music that spawned what she was inspired by. It's not a big deal

Yea. but it sucks when he gets the most recognition when he's no where near the best

We talking best in quality or in sales?

Because quality I think a lot would put The Weeknd and Frank Ocean (Personally I would also put Miguel) ahead of Sam Smith

The Weeknd sells like gangbusters too. Frank Ocean, if would stop being a jerk would sell well too.
So I wouldnt say the best American r&b acts are british. I would say 1 (Adele) is up there and honestly I would say Beyonce might be just as big if you count her as an R&B act.

You keep saying she was influenced by Hip hop but I dont hear it. R&B sure, but not hip hop. There's a difference

there is a lot of songs I hear on the radio that on first listen you'd think is a black chick but in reality is a blonde, blue eyed chick from the UK, haha.

You can take influence and create something original out of it, and quite different in the end though. People will harp on Eminem, hell go further back and people would harp on Elvis, yet if you ask many of the black artists back then they'd tell you something unique was created out of the influence.

REally? Like who other than Adele?
And honestly to me the Adele thing was always a stretch.

EDIT: She's Australian but Sia. When I first heard her on WIld Ones I just assumed she was black. I dont know if I would say she "sounds black"
