Gotham The Official Cameron Monaghan As Jerome Valeska/(Possibly) The Joker

Ben McKenzie pretty much confirmed in an interview with CBR that Jerome was to be a one off.

Cameron [Monaghan] came in in the middle of season one as what we originally thought would be a one-off, a sort of precursor to the Joker but not necessarily the Joker — but he was so magnetic and so committed that it felt like we had to go further, there was more that he could do and more that we could do with the character, certainly. Now we’re in a full blown — the end of the season really kicks it off but it becomes even more of a story of his machiavellian plans to either take over Gotham or destroy it trying.

I'm happy they kept him around!

Yep, knew it. This is one of those instances I'm happy they changed their minds on eventually letting Cameron go.

I'm hoping Cameron's new character will be a series regular in S5! That is, if his schedule allows it and the story planned!

As expected, Cameron delivered this episode. :joker:

Cool fan art I found on GothamHub. Contains potential spoilers for those who want to avoid them:

Might make it my new avvy once season 4 is over.

That was awesome and not as many spoilers as I thought there would be! :hmr::ilv:

So excited for the next six episodes!

Plus, there was a potential leaked version of the season finale script (IDK if it was a April fools joke or not) but *potential* SPOILERS!:

[BLACKOUT]

-Lady Shiva, Mother and Orphan (potentially Black Bat/Cassandra Cain/Batgirl) and Man-Bat appears in the finale (maybe connected to Hugo Strange)
- Ra's Al Ghul returns in a physical form
-Jeremiah/Potential Joker and Bruce interacts in an interrogation scene paralleling the scene in the Dark Knight, after Jeremiah tortures Alfred and shoots Selina
- Jeremiah's bombs around the city are being monitored by Ra's as he uses Joker as a tool, killing a few characters in the process.
- The old commissioner dies in an explosion
- Someone saves Jim from being arrested
-The bridges are destroyed, the national guard is called in, parts of the city are completely overtaken by criminals. It's almost exactly like No Man's Land, although the why of everything is a bit different.
-Bruce just spots Gordon shining the spotlight from the roof of the GCPD after the whole city goes to ****, and decides to meet up with him because they both want to help people, closes on an iconic batman image (like the script says) and has a callback to one of the pilot's most memorable moments/Jim and Bruce's first meeting which is supported by this image:

So it's interesting to see how Jerome really escalates the threats in the up and coming episodes. Especially against Bruce and Jim Gordon.

Jerome's talking to [BLACKOUT]his twin here.[/BLACKOUT] Check out the upper left corner of the gif.

You can see the edge of Jeremiah's glasses, and it's obvious the footage was cropped to conceal him.

I enjoyed the twin storyline more than I thought I would! Cameron did a great job as always!

He was great. Guess this is what he meant when he said he had one of the most difficult tasks in his career last year.

Someone remind me later to PM one of the mods about changing the thread title.

Is a different thread going to be made for Jeremiah since he's now officially The Joker? Or does that just become an extension of this one since Monaghan's still playing him?

Nah, just change the title of this one to "The Official Cameron Monaghan as Jerome Valeska/Jeremiah Valeska [The Joker]."

Hm. Monaghan's setting some high expectations, but given how much the show has done with Jerome and now the actual Joker, they'll probably meet them. And I do like that Monaghan is pointing out that he'll be different because I am genuinely curious how Jeremiah's Joker will differentiate from Jerome without feeling like a retread, given how much of the Joker's character and personality was put into Jerome.

Probably gonna be the Heath Ledger equivalent. Methodical, doesn't laugh much (and when he does, oof), but can still get under your skin.

I’m thinking based on those quotes, we’ll see Jeremiah/Joker closer to Ledger or John DiMaggio’s take from the animated version of Batman: Under The Red Hood.

So, Jeremiah won’t be referred to as Joker, and may not even be him! What?!

Finally, after multiple seasons of waiting, it seemed like Gotham had introduced the one Batman villain everyone had been waiting for: The Joker. With Jerome's tragic death, to the transition of madness to his twin brother Jeremiah (both played by Cameron Monaghan) the One Bad Day legend had been fulfilled, and Gotham City's Crown Prince of Crime had been born.

Well, at least that's what we all thought. Despite all of the obvious references to the iconic villain, and the Killing Joke pose that ended last week's episode, this newly-insane man is still going to be known as simply Jeremiah Valeska.

ComicBook.com spoke exclusively with Gotham executive producer Danny Cannon to get some clarification about Jeremiah's role. When we asked him whether or not the character would actually be referred to as "The Joker," this is what he had to say:

"I don't think so, no," Cannon confirmed. "This is an origin show about the beginnings of everything, therefore we just wanted to do the beginnings of why. When we first did the pilot, we were trying to create a world where someone like Batman would be necessary, and that's what we've done these last four years. If you want to survive as a villain in Gotham, you've got to think big.

"We just wanted to really make an origin story of not just one character at a time, and how they got made, but why things get so out of hand in Gotham, and where criminality is going in Gotham. How far it can get, how bad it can get before someone dons that black suit, becomes a vigilante that will change the city forever."

While Jeremiah won't be the Joker by name, he and Jerome were both very heavily influenced by the classic villain from the comics, which actually makes what Gotham is doing with him even more exciting if you're a fan of the source material.

Just before Jerome died, he told Jim Gordon that he was so much more than a man. He's an idea, a concept. The spirit of madness will continue without Jerome walking the Earth. That's exactly the twisted foundation that the Joker himself is built on.

"Well, I think that just spawned the conversation of the idea of it, of the Joker not being a one person, but like I said, it's a personality," Cannon explained. "It's a way of thinking. It's more powerful than just one person. Therefore, that sparked the conversation of, if it's the opposite of good, the opposite of Bruce Wayne, is somebody who just wants to destroy, and wants to do it in a chaotic way, then that could be anyone, because you are literally just going the opposite of your main character and take it as far as you can go. I don't think that's just one person. I think that is a way of life, it's an ideology."

So, while Gotham may not ever use the word "Joker" in reference to a specific character, the villain so clearly rooted in the DNA of the series, just as he should be. Batman can't be born without the Joker, and the Joker is alive and well in the spirit of Gotham City.
