Eternals may explain the existence of mutants and x gene but how will it be incorporated into the world and history? Mutants have always existed but everyone thought it was all meta powers?

My assumption is mutants have existed in small numbers, but the frequency of mutants is going to start increasing exponentially. Likely due to some type of Celestial experimentation in the past.

Feige even said the "Michelle/MJ" thing was used because it would be a "fun easter egg" for fans :whatever:

Fun, like how Ang Lee decided to rename Nick Nolte's character who was the main villain of his Hulk movie to "David Banner" after the hero of the Incredible Hulk TV series instead of sticking to Brian Banner. :o

Seems like it could be to do with legal restrictions. That could even be why they have MJ instead of Mary Jane. Maybe the Mary Jane character is off limits?
It’s hard to see how there would be limits to a character like Mary Jane when she’s hardly a character Sony could use in their own cinematic universe. Marvel still used Spider-Man characters that have already been in movies before like Flash Thompson and Betty Brandt so I don’t think the omission of Mary Jane and Jonah Jameson(so far) is due to any limitations placed on Marvel by Sony but merely due to Marvel’s creative desire to differentiate their version of Spider-Man from the previous iterations.

I think there will be some sort of event, similar to the Terrigenesis bomb in the comics, that will activate the dormant X-gene in certain folks and bring about the mutant paranoia we know and love from the comics.

Exactly right. I followed the production of Homecoming closely and their big thing was "Let's be different than what came before"
Making a lot of supporting characters a mix between characters or making them characters in name only.
I just hope they don't make a lot of the same unnecessary changes to the Fantastic 4

Yeah I can accept that. One reason charles forms the team

If they do, and it's even more drastic than Fant4stic, then Tim Story's version, or even Roger Corman's version is still going to end up the most faithful of all the films.

Feige: Well, we never even looked at it as a big reveal necessarily but more of just a fun homage to his past adventures and his past love. She's not Mary Jane Watson. She never was Mary Jane Watson. She was always this new high school character, Michelle, who we know there's an "M" in Michelle and an "M" in Mary. [laughs] So we're so clever and we thought, "Wouldn't it be neat if her initials were MJ?" And then I think it leaked that she would be playing MJ and then it became a whole headache for Zendaya to have to navigate. It was never a big, "Oh my God, it's a big reveal!" There are big reveals in the movie. That's not one of them.

That's realllllly dumb. That's like calling some random character "Wolverine" because their name starts with a W and ends with an E.

Feige had to have known fans would react badly to this.

I think we've discussed this before, but I think they could get away with a casual verbal reference to mutants or the Baxter building. Maybe even a mention of the Fantastic Four's I'll-fated space mission. Imagine seeing a reference to a private space mission on a newscast regarding Reed, Sue etc?

Yup we've thrown this idea around before in here. I think that would work splendidly.

I'd love to see a credits scene after Eternals showing Professor X's wheelchair. Just that slight tease.

Considering the other films weren't nearly as successful and remembered like the Spider-Man movies, I think they'll just make it as accurate as they can. With some of the typical MCU changes, of course, but they'll get the characters correct.

You would think, wouldn't you? It's not like MJ was used recently either. It'd be 10 years since Spider-Man 3 and she wasn't in TASM series.

Why would he care, the movie still made almost $900 million. We comic book fans are irrelevant

I think that Feige quote might be fluff he just thought would sound good. I'm sure I heard the writer originally intended her to actually be Mary Jane and Feige put an end to that, yet inexplicably kept the initials.

Because he seems like a fan himself. I bet he actually grew up reading Fastistic Four

Yeah that would actually be a nifty explanation for the sudden appearance of mutants. A movie where you find out the origin and then you flash forward to present day at the Xavier School.

Sidebar, but I hope we get a Nate Grey movie somewhere down the line. That whole Summers family drama with Cykes, Jean, Cable and all of them would be good.

And the sad thing about it is, the 616 MJ I grew up reading was nothing like the Kirsten Dunst version. Raimi seemed to have burrowed elements from Liz Allan and Gwen Stacy to create his version of the character.

Zendaya is basically MJ in real life. When the rumors came out, it seemed like a no-brainer that's who she was going to play. The MJ thing is definitely one of the few missteps in the MCU's history. It just baffles me why Feige went that route instead of doing 616 MJ who is very different from Raimi's version.

I'm guessing this is the route they are going to take as it makes the most sense and stays true to what mutants are and what they represent in the comics

Of course they'll keep making Deadpool movie. The question is, will they be set in the MCU? Fingers crossed that they won't.

Doctor Strange is Feige's favorite hero. Have you seen the movie? Not exactly one of Marvel's best efforts.

But...it's Feige's MJ!!! Lord Feige makes no mistakes with any characters :o

Sorry man, but I just had to say that given past conversation on the Netflix guys :oldrazz:

Wait do people still think there is gonna be a separate, white redhead MJ in these movies? That ship has sailed, y'all.

Because he seems like a fan himself. I bet he actually grew up reading Fastistic Four

He's a fan himself and these movies have still had plenty of changes under his reign. Being a fan doesn't mean you aren't ever gonna allow liberties to be taken in the adaptation process.
