Gavin Feng (China BO expert) has pretty much said Disney sucks at marketing over there and it shows.

Even the Infinity War fan event in China was a DISASTER (the main show was a concert of irrelevant singers).

The Avengers: Infinity War The Official News and Speculation - - - - - - - - - - - Part 26

Avengers: Infinity War stars sidelined at Shanghai event by Chinese artistes

Before the singers went on stage the hosts also told the actors to step aside, and they finally went applauding aside while the singers got the spotlight

Just when fans thought that things could not get any worse, Hong Kong singer Eason Chan had to top it all off with possibly the most cringe-worthy moment of the event.

During his speech, he said:

“What are they called? Superman? Oh, superheroes. Superhero, whatever.”

This is true, in the China the film was marketing explicitly as “From the director of Fast & Furious 7” which helps tremendously since that franchise is one of the biggest Hollywood franchises in China but I also think there’s something about Aquaman that’s also particularly appealing audiences there. Keep in mind that while Aquaman in the West mostly has a mixed response in China the film has been really well received(better than BP another new superhero film that joined the billion dollar club). Aquaman has a rating of 7.8 on Douban(which is basically the Chinese equivalent to Rotten Tomatoes) while BP got a mediocre 6.8 score. Aquaman also received an extension for its a theatrical run in the Middle Kingdom something only few other Hollywood films such as Infinity War get -- which indicates how well the movie is doing especially in repeat viewings. It seems audiences want new characters so to me the answer seems to lie in doing a really fresh take on the X-Men that;s so different from what we've seen before to the point it kind of feels like you're seeing the first ever X-Men film.
Yes it needs to feel new.

Thanks for the other info too.

Yea Venom and Aquaman appeal to the Chinese audience in different ways. They love crazy visuals and weird monsters. I knew Venom would do well over there. Given how popular Godzilla is etc.
Yeah, I was confident Venom would do well in China (not so much the West though), but wasn’t sure on Aquaman. But they made it with a lot of spectacle which goes down very well there.

Here is what he said for reference:

It's worth to keep a close eye on there, not only for SH movies, but other movies in general as well. Disney - and Fox - seem to be behind the marketing compared to other studios, including Paramount.

Random question:

Should Sue Storm be the Invisible Woman right off the bat or do we do a slow burn for character development around MCU Fantastic Four 2 where the Girl becomes the Woman?

She shouldn't be invisible until the last 15 minutes of the third movie where she'll only be called Invisible Girl. Until then, everyone should be able to see her.
She needs to earn her invisibility. :o

I didn't realize that the name being changed to Invisible Woman had historical significance to the mythos?

I was hysterically laughing thinking of you when I was googling some vintage F4 art. Jack Kirby literally gave EVERYBODY the same face.

Basically she has a miscarriage, gets Dark Phoenix’ed by a Fantastic Four villain, she snaps out of it and becomes stronger because of it. Thus she becomes the Invisible Woman and suddenly the most powerful member of the 4.

Originally in Stan & Jack's run Sue Storm's superhero nickname was actually 'Invisible girl'(sort of like when Jean Grey from the early X-Men comics codename was 'Marvel Girl') then when John Byrne took over the book he decided that Sue needed to retire the old Invisible Girl name in favor of 'Invisible Woman' which of course sounded more mature and he used that slight change to signify Sue had 'grown up'. This was after Pyscho-Man took advantage of Sue's negative emotions she felt from her miscarriage that transformed her 'Malice'-- An evil version of herself.

The name change was done to signify a sense of empowerment for the character as well as to progress her beyond the weak, needy, misogynistic stereotype she was in the 60's. In a way, it was Bryne symbolizing growth for the character. It was a major leap forward for her and it would be interesting to see that somewhat mirrored in the MCU.

That's very interesting, but personally I don't want a "weak, needy, misogynistic stereotype" Sue Storm in the MCU; they can find other ways to give her character development without making her (the only female member of the team) to be a weakling who needs other men to rescue her. In fact, Sue has the most powerful abilities in the Fantastic Four; I think that should be the focal point of her character.

Very interesting. Thanks for summarizing these events. In this case - I think... She should be called "Invisible Woman" from the start. Simply because Sue is a grown woman (likely in her 30s as opposed to early 20s) and I doubt Marvel will want her written to be the stereotypical 60s archetype. She can still go through similar development.

I think another question is whether Sue should be a scientist in the MCU or remain an actress/celebrity as she was in the original run. Trank and Story both reinvented her into being a scientist like Reed but for differentiation sake and to make her unique from Reed - maybe it would be best if they stuck with her classic occupation

So i suppose people hated the darker skinned colour of the people in black panther? She said the people being racist were mostly black people. Because they were. She was the victim of abuse, don't try and make out that it was her fault. For what? She had a white parent? That makes her entitled?

Have a long hard look at yourself and find the prejudice.

Lol are u Alexandra shipp? Cause u seem very defensive. Like I said. Dark skin women aren’t represented well in the media so people wanted a dark storm? What’s wrong with that? No one attacked her. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a dark skin version of storm. Black panther was fine cause..... uhhhh duh it was set in Africa and had dark skin people. She knew she got the role cause of her light skin. And yes her being mixed is also a factor as she’s not fully a black woman. So instead of giving the role to s black Woman they decid to give it to a light skin mixed woman. I mean come on. That’s like if they gave black panther to a mixed guy with light skin. Imagine that outrage

That reminds me of an article I saw about a black panther broach that had light skin instead of bosemans dark skin. Also reminds of how it came out that shuri could've been cast as a light skin actress. Thank goodness they didnt because she wouldve felt out of place in the family imo.
But colorism is a real thing, especially in the black community. it's always been 'light skins vs dark skins' darker skinned actors and actresses are criminally underrepresented in most media. And light skins are often persecuted for getting more opportunities. It's not right but it's the way it is, It's a vicious cycle.

Indeed should the three MCU movies make the Venom/Aquaman numbers in China in 2017 (Guard 2, Spider-Man and Ragnarok) they would have all joined the 1bn club.

I’m not sure whether it’s all about marketing since the brand recognition is there and the three key selling elements for that market — silly fun, actions find visual, were there too, particular for Guardian and Ragnarok.

Oh Colombia approved the merger btw not that it really matters just a side note.

Jack Kirby literally gave EVERYBODY the same face.

Not uncommon, and when some artists do that it really works even though it's familiar from another character ........ Look at Steve Dillon's work for instance.

Yeah, Disney had the third best avg gross of Hollywood films and Paramount was clearly boosted with a higher avg. because of only having 2 entries, one being Mission Impossible.

Also, last I checked Marvel films have generally done better then DC over there prior to Aquaman, so they (apparently) didn't know anything either. Were they a bit lucky (and likely surprised by the degree of success) with China loving spectacles and offering a new twist to the genre by a director of Chinese decent with a previous hit there? Or did they truly discover the secret sauce of marketing in China? I'll lean toward the former much more then the latter. Certain franchises just connect over there, like Venom. I'm not saying the marketing can't drastically improve, but sometimes it's just about the content of the film or the freshness of the character itself.

Since Colombia is in Latin America, I think that its most likely that Brazil and Mexico will follow in such footsteps and approve it too with conditions most likely attached.

Skip to 29:50. For the Loki and Daredevil crossover we all want:funny:

Meh, I kind of wanted the other Tom who plays everyone's friendly neighborhood arachnid man to be the one who came on stage to see Charlie Cox(for obvious reasons).
