Shipp is definitely the victim in this situation. People attacking her for the color of her skin is wrong and there's no other way to frame it, there's no justification for it. I understand why she's a bit upset by everything that has transpired since the moment she was cast in the role. She has come under more scrutiny than any of the actors Singer cast for Apocalypse. She genuinely loves playing Storm & she loves the X-Men... It's really a shame.

The backlash Shipp got for taking on the role is still confusing to me. Zendaya didn't look anything like Aaliyah and looks more racially ambiguous than Shipp, that I could understand.

For the entire cast it’s gotta be awkward to be in a lame duck situation like this. Even when Amazing Spider-Man 2 was out, it wasn’t supposed to lead to a reboot immediately after (even though it ultimately did).

How will they handle those type of questions? Can they really just pretend that they're going to be back for the MCU X-Men when in reality they'll eventually be recast? When Dark Phoenix comes out Disney will be control by then so I wonder how they handle the marketing for the film?

There should be no 'blame' to assign. I can understand preferring someone darker skinned to play a specific character, but it's not a hate crime if a black role goes to a black actress.

Alexandra Shipp and Halle Berry are biracial. I know people hate to acknowledge this, but black and biracial are not the same.

Exactly. Mutants are like normal superhumans but dialed up to 11. One single mutant with the ability to level a city block could cause as much or more damage than Scarlet Witch did in Sokovia. This really writes itself. And as for how somebody would know who is and isn't a mutant -- the Government would make sure people know. "These are the good ones and these are the ones you should be afraid of"

And let's not forget that some mutants become terrorists who attack "normal" civilians in the name of mutant rights. There would be a public backlash against all mutants after just one major terrorist attack, such as the Brotherhood and Mystique are wont to launch in the comics. A certain segment of the public would support the Sentinels, mutant concentration camps, genocide and everything in between. There could be demands for genetic testing in utero, too, as James Watson recently proposed to identify and abort fetuses with a "gay" gene. (Just typing that makes me feel sick to my stomach.)

My uncles had old issues of Marvel Mystery Comics and 1940s Captain America that they gave me to read when I was about 3 years old. They also had tons of EC comics they gave me because I was into monsters and horror movies. When I think back to that it's shocking. Those books could have paid for my college tuition if we had saved them.

(My uncles also had Tijuana bibles, but the less said about those, the better. )

There definitely is a preference for lighter skinned actresses, and that’s been a whole debate for decades. One of the main reasons Black Panther was a big deal was the sheer number of darker actresses onscreen together. Amandla Stenenberg was even in the running to play Shuri but dropped out for that reason. So I get where people are coming from even if I think personally going after individual actors isn’t gonna solve anything. It’s the studios and casting directors who need to change.

She apparently tried to low key shade Kiki for wanting to take her job, lmao.


I see where she’s coming from, even though I haven’t liked her Storm. It’s gotta suck when you ain’t even out the door yet and people are already taking about potential replacements.

Everyone in Hollywood knows that the entire X-franchise is being recast* once Disney closes on Fox. Actors lobby for jobs all the time, so that isn't disrespectful at all. Shipp needs to keep it moving and look forward to her next roles. Snarking on Twitter isn't going to change anything.

What I think is going to be interesting is how the rest of the MCU heroes react to mutants. In the comics, the Avengers and the X-Men have always had a strained relationship. Spider-Man has had close ties with different X-Men (especially in Ultimate Marvel). I could see each member of the Avengers having their own opinion about what should be down about the "Mutant problem".

Will be interesting to see how their relationship is handled in the MCU

Omg. She flipped out on the people who said they want a darker storm and people retaliated. Plus she’s a horrible storm so it’s not a huge loss if she leaves. Her portrayal is terrible. Fox in general did a terrible job imo with both Halle and shipp. So shipp crying about being replaced is annoying cause she adds nothing to the character. It’s both peoples fault. She’s the one that baited the argument and people said they wanted a darker storm. Ain’t nothing wrong with people wanting a dark skin storm. She’s just upset people casted when the deal was being talked about and she knew her version of storm will be buried when mcu storm is introduced. No one attacked her. She basically got upset over people wanting a new version lol

in all seriousness, discussion of actor pigmentation is more than a tad squicky. But if Ororo is going to be depicted as African in the MCU it makes sense that the actress portraying her would be a darker skinned individual.

One thing I disagree with is Ms. Layne being accused of trying to take Shipp's job. MCU Storm is a completely different role.

I just don't abide the victimizing of light skinned black people (mixed race or otherwise) as though Africans can't be light skinned. It's one thing to prefer a darker skinned actress, it's another to categorise them as 'not black enough to be African'.
