So Fox needs to have a FF film in theaters by 2022 in order the keep the rights, correct?

None of us can be sure, but that seems likely to be in the ballpark to at least get the cameras rolling.

Key year might be 2017: Fox announced their FF reboot 2 years after ROTSS in 2009. Scripts were drafted and so on (appearance of intent), Trank officially given the directors chair in 2012, then bugger all until late 2013 with the casting of MBJ, 6 years sfter ROTSS. Cameras rolled in spring 2014, 7 years after.

I believe they would have to begin principle photography within 7 years of last release date (or August 2022).

That would mean they'd have to start putting things together (script, director, production design, locations etc. ) and make a firm decision to go or not go by 2021 at the latest.

But I also think that part of the reason the last film turned into such a mess was they were under the gun and couldn't fire Trank or re-think anything because of the looming deadlines. I would expect them to learn from that and try to give themselves more of a cushion in the future and not take it right up to the deadline.

If Fox hasn't announced anything and isn't seriously pushing ahead by early 2021 (or a little more than four years from now, I think that's the end).

They'll leave it even later this time round and just cobble something together at the last minute. They'll hire a director named Posh Skank who has one film under his belt named Chronic. :o

Yup, no news by 2020 I'd say Fox are thinking real hard about whether trying again is at all worthwhile. Nothing by 2021 then it's surely done.

Can't see them trying to cobble something together again last minute. FFINO had a script for years, a director attached for near 2 years before filming...And it was still a colossal turd.

An obvious photo manip, and probably old, but I just found it funny

Any realistic option for Fox to carry on with this series would require an assist from Marvel. This project would take a collaboration between the two companies. That's the Spidey deal......highly unlikely. The other is the Universal option. Turn all production rights over to Marvel and keep a distribution deal for Fox in place. No way in hell they do this.

Those two options are more likely than FOX attempting to reboot this thing again in a limited time period. They just lost money....LOL. They can't do a cheap FF. And they wouldn't dare spend big budget to save the franchise knowing they will lose big time. This thing is over.

Some context:

- In early 2015, Marvel started putting a "ban" on merchandise and - specifically - videogames. No XMen or FF characters in games (i.e. characters whose movie rights belonged to Fox)
- Previous games, under previous licenses, can still use whatever they want. The last game under previous license will expire in 2019
- Highly anticipated Marvel vs Capcom 4 video game is probably going to be announced next week at PSX. It is heavily rumored and pretty much confirmed by some video game sites
- Some of the most iconic characters in the series are Wolverine, Magneto, and Dr. Doom

The interesting part is no one knows if FF characters will be allowed, but sources are adamant about no XMen/mutants. Not a whole lot said about FF. We will know for sure next week (and if the game is really happening). Depending how it pans out, it could have some meaning for the MCU.

I've seen some discussion of this, but I know zero about video games. Could they just slot other characters in there or would gamers say: "What the f***?!?!" if Doom and X-Men characters weren't there?

When I was at Disney World, it was very glaring that FF and X-Men were missing. I was in a store that had nothing but Marvel merchandise, but there weren't any Fox characters even inadvertently popping up on anything.

Well think about it, Marvel doesn't need the F4 characters. With Dr Strange and breakout characters like Black Panther and Giant Man, not to mention others like Ghost Rider and Blade, they are deep with characters right now.

No FF chars either.

The leaker specifically said he heard no mutants, but hadn't heard one way or another on FF characters. The ban is for FF characters too, but I'm mentioning specifically for MvC.

Gamers are already saying "WTF"? As I said, Wolverine, Magneto, and Dr. Doom are classic characters in those games. Especially Wolverine. I have seen some folks saying they won't buy the game.

We will know for sure next week

So IF (big if) we find out next week that X-Men characters aren't in it but FF characters are, that might be telling us something. . . :yay:

It could be a very good indicator.

I can't believe Disney had been so uptight about FF/X-Men. ESPECIALLY X-Men since that's a very popular franchise and they could be profiting from the merchandise.

It might tell us that Fox are saving the FF characters for a new Fant4stic video game and voodoo dolls/ target practice dolls in time for Christmas. :o

The X-Men have their fanbase, but the MCU characters are much more popular at the present time. And Marvel has an awful lot of them through the movies, network and Netflix shows.

The original Capcom lineup included 18 Marvel characters, half of which are under licensing agreements with FOX. But Marvel could swap them out, as in the following example, and not miss a beat:

Deadpool - Deadpool
Dr. Doom - Ultron
Magneto - Dr. Strange
Super Skrull - Groot
Wolverine - Black Panther
X-23 - Black Widow
Storm - Captain Marvel
Sentinel - Ant Man
Phoenix - Thanos

Who does Deadpool get replaced with?

It would at least support (but not confirm) our suspicions a deal has either been made (perhaps in return for the TV show expansion), or one has been agreed with Fox officially handing the FF rights back at some point in the future.

If (and like you say, a big if) this is so I'd say the latter the more likely as both Fox & Marvel can honestly deny the rights have reverted, and Feige's statement on having a Sony like deal with Fox being an impossibility 'at this juncture' would also be very true.

Maybe they'll keep FF characters out either way, so as not to reveal their hand that any kind of deal has been made. So even if Marvel have somehow gained the FF back, they might still choose to obscure that fact by not featuring any of them in any video games.

Or, run with me on this, they just don't have the Fantastic Four film rights and nothing has been reverted.

I would agree. Though I am still convinced that the First Family will come home to Marvel in time for Phase IV, there's quite a bit of time before we see our next FF film. And Marvel has a crapload of popular live action characters right now.

Officially, as things stand, Fox do indeed still hold the FF rights. I for one would not dispute that.

And I can only speak for myself, but even if the FF turn up in a video game or merch I wouldn't see that as confirmation of anything. It would add weight to my suspicion something has happened, but a suspicion is what that would remain (for me at any rate).

Bottom line: We can only wait and hope. No matter what else happens that may or may not add weight to thoughts a deal has been or might be done, I won't beleive Marvel have the FF back until it is officially confirmed.
