It counts just like marathon shows for Avengers, DH2, etc. counted. But it does not provide a huge boost. There aren't that many marathon shows, so it's a minimal amount at the end of the day. Maybe a $1-2m boost, but not much more than that.

Yes most people don't have that much time to take out of their day. I can't immagine those who sat through the MCU marathon. that's 5 freaking films and then Avengers. Some of us don't have that big of an attention span. :)

3 films is enough for me but how can one do 5?! :wow: did you attend the marvel marathon?!

It might get a bigger boost though because school is out.

I would have quit the minute i hit Thor.

I own all the mcu films but i can never sit through them all...once captain america hit i would have gone for a walk

I'm not sure that your attention span is really what is standing trial. It's more like your roundedness as a human being and your ability to tolerate monotony before your will to live falters.

I love me some comicbook geekiness, but a "marathon" like that is a day of your life without sunlight, birdsong, or the gentle reassurance of palpable reality.

Subtracting the 3D costs, The Avengers grossed about 160-170 million on OW. Now, with TDKR, I wonder at number the film would have to reach to match The Avengers totals after subtracting the IMAX costs... hmmmm.

Avengers is around $180-185m without 3D but including IMAX. TDKR (including IMAX) would need above $185m for us to definitely say it had more admissions.

TDK grossed approximately 15 mil in IMAX OW. Adjusted for inflation, TDK makes roughly $152 million OW without IMAX.

TA subtract $21+ mil for IMAX and also 3D lets say $20 million, if released in 2008, $152+ million.

My math might be wrong but TA benefited from 3D/IMAX surcharges.

Its closer than I thought, both movies with no 3D and IMAX are nearly identical with TDK making $152 million OW with no IMAX and inflated for 2012. So, I'm not surprised Rises is tracking just behind TA. If there was 3D, Rises would set the OW record.

Really? That's not what a few sites stated. One concluded a 175m opening while another called it at 169m.

If we assume that TDKR outperforms TDK's theater average by 15% ($17,692 vs. $15,384), and opens in the same # of theaters (4,366), and has the same % drops from Friday-Saturday-Sunday. We're looking a at a $182 million opening.

Friday: $77,241,525.60
Saturday: $54,841,483.18 (29% drop from Friday)
Sunday: $50,454,164.52 (8% drop from Saturday)
Total: $182,537,173.30

If it performs similarly (opening weekend is 29% of the overall dollars) we're looking at a $629.4 million box office run.

Opening Day will probably be higher considering the potential of midnight shows. Also do not see it having that high of a multiplier, closer to 33% which is still really good.

^^^

Wow. I predicted a while ago that TDKR would not beat TA's opening weekend but could very well beat it's domestic total. As TA's bo grew i wasn't so sure but that prediction looks hopeful.

182m sounds very likely. It's what I'm predicting. 190m would be outstanding, but I'd marvel at a 180m opening too.

If it grosses $90-$100 million single day on opening day it has to drop no more than 40% on the 21st to have a shot at the record. I just don't think its gonna happen without 3D.

I actually think 15% is conservative, considering inflation and that it's already tracking to be bigger than TDK was in 2008.

I don't think there's a chance it'll be bigger than Avengers. It would have to outperform TDK by over 30%, which I don't think is realistic.

10% - $174.6 million
15% - $182.5 million
20% - $190.4 million
25% - $198.4 million
30% - $206.3 million

But I think it'll end up having better legs than Avengers, mostly due to the 2 month IMAX exclusivity and the Oscar buzz that's already attached to it (regardless of whether it gets nominated or not), so I don't think a similar multiplier as TDK is too far off.

TDK didn't make anywhere near $15m in IMAX. It made $6.3m from only 94 screens. Avengers made $15.3m on 275 screens. TDKR will be on 350+ screens.

LOL

nahhhhhh ....

If they alowed for heavy pot smokage some would be able to do it more then others

These numbers are all over the place. Back in 2008, several sites claimed that TDK made approximately 15-17 million off of the IMAX screenings. The Avengers is said to have raked much more than 25 million via 3D.

WB's THE DARK KNIGHT RISES will drop into an estimated 4,375+ theaters next weekend--that already ties it for 3rd most of all-time.
