I'm wondering if WB is upset they didn't convert the film to 3d for the extra cash.
I imagine some guys at WB are smarting a bit about the 3D issue...
Chattanooga residents are ready to take a trip to Gotham City again.
A week out, three local theaters already have sold 534 tickets for the midnight premiere of the newest Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises," and managers expect ticket sales to skyrocket as opening night approaches on Friday.
"This is going to be one of those big ones for the summer that we have been preparing for," said Paige Walker, assistant manager at Carmike Battlefield 10 in Fort Oglethorpe.
While her theater has sold only 56 tickets so far, Walker expects sales to pick up this week. She's planning to open up all 10 theaters 1,536 seats for the midnight premiere.
"More toward the end of the week, it will start selling like crazy," she said.
......
Gary Tremble, assistant manager at Rave Cinema in East Ridge, said the entire building sold out for the premiere last year of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II," the last in the film series.
"We have 18 theaters and all 18 theaters were filled," he said. "We're expecting [Dark Knight Rises] to be like that."
Rave Cinema seats 3,274 people when all 18 theaters are sold out, and the theater has sold 270 Imax tickets and 123 regular tickets to the film so far, Tremble said. He is making plans for the midnight premiere based on the crowds he saw when "The Dark Knight" premiered four years ago.
"'The Dark Knight' was the busiest movie we ever had here, and it stayed really busy for a month," he said. "I don't doubt that this will be another one of those movies."
.......

Yes, yes, yes, yes! This is awesome news! My friends just bought their tickets to the midnight release as well yesterday when we went to our local theater to see Moonrise Kingdom. Of course, the IMAX version has been sold out for a month so they're seeing a regular sceening. Our theater is already putting up 3 am showings of the IMAX as well now.
While I personally agree with your sentiment, you have to reflect that there is no business in the world that would cheerfully say "no thanks" to an effortless $200m.Oh yes, instead of 1.2 Billion dollars they're only going to get 1 Billion dollars. Oh, those poor studio execs, how will they ever feed their children?

I understand that, studios are greedy, but the person at the offices at WB who is shaking his fist in the air and cursing the lost opportunity to rip people off needs to have a long hard look at himself given the amount of cash this movie is going to bring in.
I understand where you are coming from on moral grounds, but they have a business to run. For every Batman movie that has billion dollar potential, WB also has gigantic flops like Green Lantern where they dump $400m into it and then don't get anywhere near the return on their investment that they would like. It's easy to think of 3D for Avengers as Disney ripping people off, but the flip side of it is Disney made up for some of their massive losses due to the John Carter fiasco. An executive even got fired because of that movie's failure.
It is a rip off because it's post-converted, and that's all Rises would have been a post-converted rip-off. I don't care if WB lose out on and extra couple hundred million, I'm glad Nolan had enough pulling power to tell them to shove their BS 3D crap elsewhere.
The only 3D films I actually rate are Hugo, Avatar, and Prometheus. And those films have got two things in common 1) shot in 3D, 2) made by three of the best directors on the planet.
This is exactly where I stand.I am glad too. I'll take 70 minutes of 2D IMAX footage over any type of 3D. I'm not against the concept of 3D, just the current execution of it. I can't stand the fact that we have to put on those stupid glasses just to be able to watch the movie. 2D IMAX is stunning to watch. TDK and M:I4 had some of the most jawdropping theatrical experiences because of the IMAX footage. And it appears we are getting around 40-45 minutes more in TDKR. Should be one hell of a sight to behold.
This is exactly where I stand.
Also for some reason the thrill of watching on a huge screen IMAX is somehow diminished when I put on those 3D glasses. I don't know why, it kind of makes it seem like I'm looking through a virtual reality headset rather than at a real (& huge) wall of film.
