Those figures were off. Avengers admissions topped TDK's about 500k, it was quite close. TDK had about 23m flat while Avengers was roughly 23.5.

TDKR is going crush both though

Maybe we'll see. As I said there hasn't been a double digit increase in attendence since Spider-Man, which was the original point I'm making.

From Box Office Mojo

Bar for Success
The Dark Knight's opening weekend theater average adjusts to approximately $40,000 in 2012 dollars. The Dark Knight Rises needs to match that figure, which translates to $175 million across its 4,404 locations.

I think the bottom scenario is inevitable. And they're predicting as high as $228 Mil. I've been waiting for WB's expected figures and after hearing $170 Mil, they're easily underestimating the OW.

Interesting, they're predicting $214 million for opening weekend. I don't think it'll go that high but we'll see.

228 million would be :awesome:

Movie Critic Assassins Predicts $211 Mil OW for 'The Dark Knight Rises'

"Actually had the number of 197 whistling around my head the last couple weeks for this. But after reading more into it, film isn’t just the next chapter, its the finale. A Batman finale, a first of its kind we may never see again. This makes it more than historic enough to power past The Avengers. The largest opening in film history is well within grasp."

More from Box Office Mojo:

Since the main selling point appears to be that it is the final installment, a good way to come up with a range for the opening weekend of The Dark Knight Rises is by looking back at other popular series finales. For its five-day opening, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King earned $124.1 million, which was a 22 percent improvement over The Two Towers. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith jumped 44 percent over its predecessor with a $158.4 million four-day start, while Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was up 35 percent to $169.2 million over opening weekend. Based on these figures, The Dark Knight Rises should be in line for somewhere between $193 million and $228 million.

I agree with this being the final film, it'll generate more dollar easily.

They are going off the theory with digital projection they are going to push other movies off screens and show more TDK viewings. Interesting theory, I just don't know. Avengers nearly pushed most theater chains to the brink as there was alot of walk up demand, which TDK will seem to have as it has much lower presales than Potter 7 did.

It was well documented that Avengers caused AMC's credit card system to come to a screeching halt. Now maybe they are more prepared for that, as they had a couple of months to adjust.

To get to 200M would require a 20% boost in attendance or about 28M ticket sales. It would need 29 or 30M to break the record. This seems like hype to me, but if it does happen, this will be unprecedented that two movies in the same year were underestimated by that much of a margin. We'll see.

Just spoke to a fellow friend who manages an AMC chain and he says there are discussions with 'upper management' to keep the doors open a full 24 Hours after the stroke of midnight to meet the demand of 'The Dark Knight Rises'

:wow:

Wait a second.

So now people are saying The Dark Knight Rises is expected to at least meet The Avengers' opening weekend record?

I guess a storm is coming . . .

HP DH 2 was up 35% from its predecessor for its OW. TDKR is expected to exceed that and if so, its a new OW record and due to the increase of box office dollar the past week/few days for Brave, ASM, Ice Age, its a peek into what is about to happen when this monster of a film is released on 7/20.

HP7.2 increase is deceptive since it was in 3D.

Its gonna be a madhouse tomorow night, heck I may even ride past the theater to see how crowded it is.

True then again, look at LOTR ROTK, SW ROTS. This is the finale and basically what they're saying, if Rises matches TDK's figures and has an increase due to it being the final film, it will pass TA OW record.

This feels like the few days before the avengers when predictions were in the 160-170 range than the actuals exploded. Actually scratch that this actually feels bigger.

The Box Office Rises.

and Excel is going to be spot on, btw.

Yes, he was. His figures are quite a realistic shot of actually happening but, he could be way off. Rises could gross $225-$250 Mil for an OW for all we know. Like the guy from Movie Critic Assassins said, this isn't just a finale -- It's a Batman finale. The likes of which we may never see again. That alone he believes will be enough for Batman to RISE above the OW record. It will be exciting to watch this all unfold and even if it falls short, I'm still going to love this conclusion in what looks to be arguably the greatest trilogy of all time.

Woah, now most sites are predicting it to hit over 200? even without beating Avengers, 200 million opening sans 3D is just mindblowing, if it actually beats the Avengers opening....that would be a statement that would probably overshadow any statement inside the film itself!

A win for 2D.
