The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR Box Office Thread III

The movie will have legs in the coming weeks, that is for sure.

Deadline & Nikki Finke are frequently wrong regarding numbers. It's better to wait for the numbers tomorrow.

It's nice to think that the movie will have good legs, but an opening weekend is something that is impossible to get back.

For example, the average NFL Sunday afternoon broadcast draws less than 5 million viewers. The NFL's weekly showcase, Sunday nights on NBC, draws 20 to 30 million. The Super Bowl gets over one hundred million viewers. Years ago I read an article in the New York Times that stated that something like half of the Super Bowl audience had not, in fact, watched any other football that year.

Studios try to create an event with an opening weekend, something like the Super Bowl- an unofficial national holiday. It becomes the thing to do- and particularly the thing to do for an audience of millions who have no particular interest in Batman (or Spider-Man, or The Avengers, or Harry Potter or Pirates, etc.).

Once this tragedy happened, and also the Warner marketing machine went dark, that audience was gone forever.

That's quite a hyperbolic statement. There IS still an audience for this film, life does continue after tragedy.

Though they decided not to cancel screenings which we aleady know but, it was discussed to pull TDKR from theaters in the US and re-release it in December.

All the estimates/predictions so far are reporting a lower OW while there are still a ton of admissions to account for. Pre-release tracking, I'm told was realistically at $180-$190 mil. The estimate is more closely to be $170-$175 mil after the events on Friday.

The shooting definitely didn't effect the opening weekend in NYC. I arrived at a 2:20 showing at 12:45 and there was already a massive line -- when I was leaving (around 5:30) there was already a massive line for 7:00 shows...

Pretty much every showing was sold out. Won't beat the Avengers (because it's not in 3D) but it will open at almost 200 million and will end up around 550 I'd guess.

I just got back from my second viewing. The 10:30am IMAX showing was almost sold out, very few seats left once it started, and the 2:30/6 showings are all sold already. The lobby was full, no room to move when we were leaving. It was like a flood of people had come in.

Yea, all these estimates are iffy to me... I've NEVER seen a movie sold out in so many theaters like this is. Hell, the only time I have ever seen these crazy lines 2 HOURS before the show starts is the midnight showing of TDK... now it looks like a midnight showing all day long.

Ppl will go see this movie...ive seen the movie 3 times and all showings were sold out n it was packed...but there is way more security though...they even do bag checks now

Our theater had an attendee who looked like he was watching to see if anyone would go for the exit door's during the movie. One woman did but it was to escort her son out, I think he got scared as it was right after the breaking of the Bat scene.

My theater(s) are stupid... even after the shooting... no bag checks... NOTHING... I didn't even see a cop inside the theater, just outside.

However, you have to think they would put some undercovers inside... i mean...they HAVE TO right????

They have cameras and for sure they had security. You don't want to see cops roaming around just like we don't see cops walking around Disney World, but we all know they are there.

they always have cameras. I just didn't see any type of security that wasn't normal.

Undercovers, I'm sure... but bad checks and **** should be imperative.

I'd have to find the link but on the BOT forums they were showing that not only was TDKR behind Avengers in sellouts it was behind HP7 in sellouts. I'm sure alot of theaters did sell out but the data doesn't lie.

The studios aren't reporting returns, but the theatres are still reporting sellout data and they can get the data from that.

I don't think anyone was expecting it to surpass two 3D movies anyway, it's unrealistic. As long as it gets as close to $200 as it can and still beat TDK, it's a win-win.

I don't know how it works where you live, but in mine you can not be searched by theater staff. It has to be a police officer doing it, and he has to have probable cause. Even then you can refuse and he either has to detain you for a real reason or escort you off the premises. Even after that the officer risks an unlawful detainment lawsuit. That would cause a lot of trouble. Less trouble than a shooting, yes, but its still trouble. Just because one nutjob shot some people in colorado doesn't mean a copycat will do it again this soon. If there is a copycat it will be for another movie most likely. So they can gain their own recognition.

All this aside tho, to begin searching at theaters would be a kneejerk reaction. It will most likely catch no one. Remember that the shooter went into the theater unarmed, watched 30 minutes of the movie, snuck out a side door, and brought the guns in through that door. Searching people at the front door won't be effective, and will just make customers think that they are looking for someone specific and that there is a possible threat in the building. The most effective method is to have police officers patroling the building and checking side doors from the outside. My theater already does this at night.

AMC almost immediately instituted a policy that no costumes could be worn to theater showings. It's unfortunate that had to happen. Whether or not they'll change it back after this madness.......who knows?

Can't see a legitimate reason why they would allow it again. Yeah it increases the experience for fans but oppose to being able to spot someone more suspicious easily, I don't think so.

It got an A on Cinemascore. People liked it, so it should have legs.

Deadline revised their OW number down to 161 million. This movie is going the opposite direction, don't be surprised if come Monday TDK still holds the 2D record.

They must be seeing Sundy sellouts doing worse than Saturday.

Walkups are killing a lot of movies this weekend. I mean ASM took a pretty hard drop also.
