"Even when Gotham was being blown up we never saw ONE ordinary citizen reaction shot. Even the shelters were with characters we sort of knew. One was full of St Swithens orphans and the other was Wayne Enterprises workers there still weren't ordinary citizens in there.

I can't help but feel that a two parter would have explored these things more."

This was a quote by someone from the previous thread and I just wanted to respond to it. I don't really think reaction shots of citizens was necessary. The whole point was that things had gotten so bad people wouldn't leave their houses. We saw this in it's most extreme form when they talked about cops being hunted down and the discussion about hiding indoors.

We saw people being hauled before a kangaroo court and being exiled to death. We saw a bunch of orphans trying to escape and survive.

I'm not sure what seeing "regular" citizens would have added. I imagine they would have undergone the exact same experiences as we saw others go through. Bane was pretty to the point what would happen if they tried to escape, and when the government gave up on them there was nothing for them to do but hide and survive.

I felt that the total ghost town vibe from Gotham is what gave the film this great atmosphere of danger.

I disagree. Nolan's always made Gotham about the people, and showed us how they felt/reacted to events in the movie. We got to sample some personalities. Give us a taste of the fear/anger/panic etc they were feeling.

The ghost town vibe didn't do it, IMO. It would be like if they just showed the ferries evacuating Gotham in TDK. Wouldn't be nearly effective enough compared to what we got seeing Joker's chaos turn Gotham into anarchy.

I keep shifting from agreeing with this to disagreeing with it and back again.

I wonder if the person responsible for the 'Hiest' error was wrestling w/ themself about "I before E except after C, so this has to be right" .... then seeing the correct spelling and thinking 'I before E except after C, my ass.'

The Dark Knight Rises - 9/10. :disbelief:

I absolutely adore Nolan's trilogy, but anyone who says that Rises is one star from being a perfect movie is just plain wrong. This is coming from one of Nolan's greatest defenders too.
Some people rate films differently. Some people rate purely on enjoyment factor and some rate on 10 being the most flawless film ever told. I personally rate on what I feel the particular film should be doing.

I rate Airplane 9/10 because it does everything I believe a comedy should do for I also rate TDKR 9/10 that doesn't mean I think they are on the same level nor does it mean I believe both films are one problem away from being flawless. From TDKR I expected an emotional and satisfying ending with a great story with great performances with a bucket load of wonderful looking action and on that Nolan pretty much delivered.

The quote was mine :D

The only people we saw being trialled was people high up (Dagget, Gordon, Miranda....) like high-end buisness men and detectives no one just average.

Seeing regular citizens would have brought a lot more to the film I feel and would have made it look like the Gotham in TDKR expanded outside Bruce, Blake, Gordon, Fox, Miranda, Bane and Selina. Once Harvey is outed as the madman he turned in to we should have seen these struggling Gothamites somehow looking up to Batman.

In BB we have a dinner conversation with Bruce and random people saying how they feel about Batman, we have the kid who says people have been talking about him everywhere then in the final act we have several moments of people running away in fear and even moments with people we don't know. It's not much but we know how these people are reacting. Then in TDK it takes things further with the chaos outside the TV station with people trying to shoot Reese, the busy Bar when Joker's threat is played on TV and them pushing out, chaos outside hospital and ferries then also the people sat down when Dent outs himself as Batman but you also have the moment inside the boats with the civillians and prisoners. Say what you will about that scene and the acting or whether it is a scene too far for the morality theme it gives the film a great sense about the people of Gotham.

TDKR just seems to abandon this completely. We don't a single moment about how the people of Gotham react about Bane's occupation. There isn't one scene/moment/reaction shot I don't believe with a character or group we haven't met. It doesn't expand Gotham IMO Gotham looks in pretty good condition after 5 months of terrorist reign. Just a few shots of people in shelters or out looking for food or a way to survive, small groups of rebellions against Bane the only moment (which does slightly contradict my previous point) we get is when we see people huddled up for the truck of supplies outside the store. Like I said before many times even shots of ordinary people joining the police in battle probably would have done it.

I keep shifting from agreeing with this to disagreeing with it and back again.

A two-parter would have done everything it detail and let everything breath and I truly believe TDKR had more than enough content to fill two films. The hospital scene for example could have lasted a few minutes and had bucket loads of emotion but instead it was cut/talk/cut/talk/cut/talk/cut/talk/cut/next scene yes it gets the job done but you don't feel a thing.

Speaking of that hospital scene, I just love when Bruce says, "We won". Such a great delivery, and it harkens back to him telling Jim that "The Joker cannot win" at the end of TDK.

I think TDKR had enough material for two films, but then again so did TDK. Two-Face's story could have definitely been expanded upon. In the end, I'm glad we got a trilogy where each film has its own identity.

I pretty much agree with everything you just said Deserana

Given that the groundwork was laid out in TDK especially, where Harvey mentioned at that press conference that one day Batman would have to face for the laws that he’s broken and how everyone was quick to turn against him when they were pushed into a corner by the Joker, it would have been rewarding to see on how everyone in Gotham was slowly changing their minds about Batman and how they were starting to rally up behind him for support.

A lot of my friends said that it was kind of underwhelming to see that Batman’s acceptance in Gotham was just confined into a short scene where a memorial statue of him is shown.

Heck, I thought that one thing that would have been cool especially is when during the big city fight between Bane’s men and the GCPD, that instead of Foley being killed off by Talia, that we could have seen him die trying to protect Batman. In this scenario, before Batman reaches Bane, while he’s fighting off random mercenaries, Foley spots someone aiming a shotgun at him, so he runs up and takes the bullet for Batman, thus showing on how his opinions of him have changed for the better.

And we should have seen a lot more citizens being the ones to put up those chalkboard marks of Batman’s symbol around town instead of it just being Blake.

:wow:

I think the reaction of the citizens existed only in the stadium scene and the kids on the bus. The lack of people, ordinary citizens, is something that I really missed in the movie.

The kids on the bus are still people we had sorta met before in the film (St Swithens orphans) so pretty much it is only the stadium people.

I agree with whoever said Gotham was a Ghost town and reactions were unnecessary. And let's be honest, if they did include it there would be so many complaints about hammy dialogue from them on the level of 'That's not good!' (not that these things ever bothered me).

I think Nolan cutted alot of the scenes in fear of dragging the movie too long - which, let's be honest, most 2hr 30+min films will do. Still, with more fans clamoring for more deleted content and even a Director's Cut, do you think Nolan/WB might want to appease them to that?

I believe someone posted this yesterday... whether it is official or not

Gillberg (the supposed TDKR insider) commented on it saying "Interesting".
It was supposed in 2004.

We know better now. :o

Wait, did I miss something about Gill? What happened?

Nothing happened but apparently Gill has been here for years and apparently the guy has meant to be posting a thread for a good month now. Basically some people are questioning if Gill is genuine. I don't know much about Gill so I'm not 100% sure myself.

Everything he's posted seems to be genuine, I don't recall there ever being something he said that pissed everyone off.

I think he was genuine, I just don't think he really wants to tell his story.

They couldn't just make the base that little bit bigger?

It almost looks like Bane is about to fall off the base if he just takes a few steps back.

Bane sure has a strong grasp on the rarely viewed Bat Ass.haha
