The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion Thread - - - - - - - Part 156

One of those things is not like the others, so let’s get hypothetical: Branagh in Nolan’s Gotham. Who would he play?

I feel like he could’ve been a good alternate candidate for Gordon, but for funsies, I’d say have him throw a bit of extra weight on and be Nolan’s Cobblepot.

Ooh Branagh as Copplebot is interesting--I've always been the Philip Seymour Hoffman bandwagon there.

Branagh would have been fine as Daggett (although, again, I think that should have been Penguin), or he could have even turned in a good performance as Deputy Commissioner Foley.

Especially watching the films close together, does it feel weird that TDKR would have had the Joker unable to escape from prison/being inactive for years and otherwise doesn't at all reveal a fate for him? Especially given that OTOH there are a lot of references to and following-up on of Harvey Dent?

To be honest, for a take on the character whose origin was a total mystery, I think it’s kind of fitting that his ultimate fate remains a mystery too.

We all know Nolan made a conscious decision to not reveal the Joker's fate out of respect for Heath's memory. TDK showed him get captured at the end. As far as audiences are concerned that was his fate. But the repercussions of what he did was felt throughout Rises.

Am I the only one who feels like this trilogy is being a bit swept under the rug, in recent years?

I can't explain or articulate what exactly is making me feel that way, so do pardon.

After revisiting The Batman in theaters this week, it kinda hit me what was missing from it that the Dark Knight Trilogy has in spades.

Soul.

There's this intangible heart to these three films - with characters you connect with emotionally, rather than ones you analyze. There's moments of heartfelt reflection in each of these films that just endear.

These might be among the most 'human' of films in Nolan's filmography.

The TDK trilogy is the only live action films to have Bruce Wayne acting as a playboy, which gives the movies these fun scenes and moments of lightness to contrast the darker moments. Pattinson's Batman doesn't have this.

I support this wholeheartedly.

Should John Blake have been the little blonde boy saved in BB? Would that have seem too contrived or would it have been a nice tie-in and revisiting?

I have a hunch there was a recent period where WB was ignoring the TDK trilogy on purpose out of spite because of Nolan parting ways with them after the whole streaming feud, which is why I believe Bale's Batman wasn't really included in the 85th Anniversary campaign. But since Nolan and WB seem to have mended that fence I think that it'll be business as usual moving forward. They're probably the most recognizable Batman movies of all time to general audiences, they're too big to be ignored.

Apart from all that, there's still merchandise based on the trilogy in stores. McFarlane and Hot Toys are still making collectible figures from the movies and the last time I was in the toy aisle at Target I saw these on the shelf:

I’m still pissed I haven’t seen those Spin Master figures anywhere…

Target.com has them.

Buzzfeed made a poll For "Research Purposes," I Must Know Your Opinion On These Divisive Batman Questions
For best Batman films I think the results are interesting.
Tdk came it at first with the Batman 2nd and tdkr and begins right behind at 3 and 4

Wow they're hefty polls too. Thousands of votes.

TDK trilogy took the lead in the majority of those categories it was included in (not counting the least favorite ones). Best Batman, best Bruce Wayne, best live action Batman movie (TDK won), best Alfred, best Joker, best villain (Bane won). Only one it didn't win was the best Catwoman category. Pfeiffer deserves it though. Where's the category for best Commissioner Gordon. We've had at least four live action ones now.

Surprised the votes between Burt Ward and Chris O'Donnell for best Robin are so close.

I voted

Best Batman: Bale
Least Favourite Batman: Clooney
Best Bruce Wayne: Bale
Least Favourite Bruce Wayne: Pattinson
Best Villain: Bane (The Dark Knight Rises)
Most Annoying Villain: Two-Face (Batman Forever)
Best Joker: Ledger
Best Catwoman: Hathaway
Best Alfred: Caine
Best Robin: Ward
Best Animated Batman Movie: Mask of the Phantasm
Best Live-Action Batman Movie: The Dark Knight
Least Favourite Live-Action Batman Movie: Justice League

Just watched this retrospective (again) last night.

Recommend this (and the YouTuber’s videos on BB and TDK too) for any fan of the franchise. Does a great job of tracking the film from pre-production villain and casting rumors up til release and reception

Had the trilogy ended differently, sure, I'd be all in for a sequel. But I don't need to this Dark Knight return again, nor do I have any interest in the further adventures of Robin Blake.

The only legacy Batman actor WB should ever consider calling is Keaton for the Batman Beyond reboot.

I think I can still vote for best, generally not for least when I haven's seen Affleck.
Best Batman: Keaton
Best Bruce Wayne: Bale by a hair
Best Villain: The Penguin (though surprised, in part because BR Catwoman wasn't an option)
Most Annoying Villain: BF Two-Face (though TB Riddler is close)
Best Joker: Phoenix (though it would have been Hamill if for MotP)
Best Catwoman: Pfeiffer
Best Alfred: Gough
Best Robin: Ward
Best Animated: Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
Best Live Action: Batman Returns

Edit: Also haven't seen LEGO Batman, still have to find it sad it's winning.

It should probably be left alone.

I think for me it’s just more the curiosity of imagining what a post-2012 Nolan could do with a Batman movie. It’s a fun brain teaser, even just as a pure abstraction.

Like imagine a Hans/Ludwig collab on a Batman score. How far he’s come with Hoyte on pushing what can be done with IMAX. A Batman Beyond type of story with Nolan leaning more into his sci-fi side. It actually stings a little for me to think about the potential.

Watching someone react to it for the first time on youtube got me thinking, it's one of those crazy unpredictable things of them not knowing Joey King would later on become a big star and celebrity because of that shot of her climbing up while the movie is trying to convince us it's baby Bane throws people off so much.
