After revisiting The Batman in theaters this week, it kinda hit me what was missing from it that the Dark Knight Trilogy has in spades.

Soul.

There's this intangible heart to these three films - with characters you connect with emotionally, rather than ones you analyze. There's moments of heartfelt reflection in each of these films that just endear.

These might be among the most 'human' of films in Nolan's filmography.

The Batman is very cerebral for a big budget film intended for a four quadrant audience. Nolan’s films never forgot to be sweeping blockbusters even if they pushed the envelope a bit.

The Batman (2022) really feels like what these fans were speculating about what the sequel to The Dark Knight was going to be.

Very unpopular opinion: I always felt that this variation/arrangement of the theme was a little too bright for Batman.

Even in the context of heroic action, it still feels slightly (very slightly!) off to me and always has.
I remember listening to the soundtrack before the movie came out and getting curious right away about the context for that piece.
I know, I know...

To be clear, I'm not saying it doesn't sound good, it sound f***ing epic!
But... yeah.

I've always preferred the Batman Begins motif (heard in Molossus if I remember correctly) and I wish it had been used more in the trilogy beyond the first film.

Oh I did the same thing. In hindsight I can only imagine that it was either an alternate take of the scene near the end where Batman fights the SWAT team or it was intended to be used during the Tumbler/Batpod chase scene since that scene largely has no score.

Totally agreed about Molossus not being reused. I wonder if it's because that motif was a James Newton Howard piece and he had less involvement on TDK? Not sure.

It’d work in Nolan’s universe too. Maybe swap Carmine for Alberto Falcone though—Alberto was even rumored for TDKR at one point

To me, it's pretty much the Zimmer-ized version of the Shirley Walker theme, or in that vicinity at least. I enjoy a more heroically-tinged Batman theme so I'm glad it exists, but I guess Nolan may have agreed with you since it was used extremely sparingly in the movie. Though it's still the main theme that gets used for the endings of TDK/TDKR though. Just the softer, less bombastic version.
