The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion Thread - - - - - - - Part 156

As much as I love The Dark Knight Rises, a line that's always bugged me because of how cheesy it was is Bat's response to Bane at the end during the big fight.

"So you came back to die with your city."
"No. I came back to stop you."

Like...really? That they were standing in broad daylight, somewhat awkwardly I might add, makes the moment a little comical to me.

The only bad moment of the film, or the series, for me.

Even saying nothing would've been better.

I'm definitely gonna end up grabbing these figures, but I'm unsure how soon. I've run out of room for collectibles haha.

popped in my 4k copy of TDK for like the millionth time. Even after all these years and viewings, I still have trouble turning the movie off halfway through when I got stuff to do. Just a perfectly paced film.

I don't mean to make this a 'Nolan VS Reeves' thread, but.

I'm really, really fatigued of Reeves' Batman fanboys. Again, I like The Batman - but the ones super into his film are starting to remind me of Snyder fans.

Mostly because they're spending so much time going out of their way to tell everyone how much better his depiction of Batman is than the Nolan series and how much better the film is. That Reeves is the only director to ever do a faithful Batman film.

And that his film was so much more emotional than any of the Dark Knight Trilogy. That's a big whopper, for me.

It's this beating of the chest "RAH RAH IT'S SUPERIOR!!!!"

I just don't get it, guys. When Nolan's films came around, I didn't even want to bother slamming the Schumacher films. I was just content with what was currently happening and I still loved the Burton films. Was that so hard?

Why can't we praise Reeves without having to backhand Burton and Nolan? Can't Reeves stand on his own?

Jeez.

Also, what's with this "Reeves' Batman film is so much more emotional and deep than the cold and lifeless Nolan trilogy"?

Not trying to slam The Batman - but Bruce has one emotion. He changes through nothing. And there were no emotional beats at all, really. And the one they did try (hospital scene) didn't land because we know nothing of the relationship.

Nolan's Batman films are an emotional journey - especially Rises. Which is the only Batman film I've shed tears watching.

How can anyone say these films feature no arcs or emotions or characters? Like...what?

It just feels like when I talk to the "The Batman is the best Batman movie ever!!!!!" crowd about why they love it that much, it always ends up feeling like they're gaslighting me about how all other Batman films prior didn't do things they actually DID do.

Because The Batman has now done them either for the first time. Or better.

Especially the Nolan films.

Sometimes they tell me and about how The Batman did things it actually did NOT do, too.

Literally none of us do that.

Hell, I'm one of the most vocal about The Batman being my 'masterpiece' in terms of Batman on film, yet I still rank The Nolan Trilogy as follows...

2) Batman Begins | 10/10
4) The Dark Knight | 9/10
9) The Dark Knight Rises | 7/10

...out of my top ten Bat-films.

Three long-ish posts in a row just tells me you have an ax to grind, tbh.

A bit maybe. Mostly because I'd rather not compare films but article after article and every fan space I go to, it gets a bit old.

And yeah, I had a rant - apologies.

The comparisons and flame wars about Nolan vs Burton were constant and a lot more aggressive than Reeves vs Nolan tends to be. It’s standard operating procedure.

Hmm.

I guess I just don't remember. I wasn't really clicking on those, maybe.

To me, each director is so different that it's almost pointless to compare.

I'm so glad for each flavor and style of each era of Batman films, even the bad ones. And it really bums me out when fans have to slam Rises or Begins or Returns or '89 and so on to prop anything else up.

I'm so glad Batman is my favourite hero and not Superman because Batman fans are so spoiled (in a good way) with the media/films.

You know what, it's Friday, I'm off work... I got nothing really to add except peace and love to all the Bat-fans lol, whichever denomination. We all have versions we resonate the most with and as long as we can mutually respect one another and not try to act as if one is more of a "true fan" for having a certain preference then who really cares?

My only thing is I feel like it's flirting with trouble to go all-in on the hero worship thing with Reeves. Because regardless of whether The Batman is your favorite movie ever, he will inevitably make some choices that aren't what you hoped. I think that's part of what happened with Nolan in the end with the fans. A lot of fans starting building head canons about what his series would be and it inevitably veered in some different directions. He was put on a pedestal, especially after TDK to the point that any missteps or unexpected choices became "betrayals"....you either die a hero or live long yourself to become the villain, etc etc. I'm already seeing some warning signs here, like with the whole Robin thing for example. I have no idea if Reeves is gonna adapt Robin or not, yet some seem dead-set on it happening. I'm glad I don't have too much of a dog in that race. I know fandom stuff tends to go in cycles-- I just would hope those of us who have been around the block can learn from the past a LITTLE. :funny:

We're the most spoiled fanbase, for sure. Gotta keep that in perspective.

It is the inevitable cycle with CBM directors, at least in the age of the internet. I first saw it with Raimi, then BIGTIME with Nolan, then with Whedon and then the Russos. Reeves fans are just the latest in a long line.

Just love the movies you love, folks. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s wrong. But it’s just important to remember, none of these movies or filmmakers are infallible.

I didn't know that - guess it's much better off to just ignore the noise, then.

I'm thinking of biting the bullet and buying the whole trilogy in the 4K box set versions -

I have Returns and it is an incredible set. These are the definitive versions of these films, if I can get them.

It won't be cheap.

I'd also love to have the '89.

These sets are absolutely the version of all 5 films I've been waiting for.

However, and this is me being OCD, but those UK rating stickers bother me lol. I also would rather be sure that there are no region-related playback issues with them before I drop the money on them.

I'm in America - and no issues with playback. They're region-free.

Also, if you're referring to the stickers on the front of each case - they're removable. They come off super gently with no residue or issues.

Me to my bank account right now...

edit:

Actually seeing those versions of the trilogy on Amazon now for about 40-45 a pop. Not terrible...

Don't see 89 and Returns though.

There is the rating system printed on the discs, but that doesn't bother me.

Just be careful with the Amazon orders - the reviews make me confused if you'll receive what you expect because it says those versions but reviews are for normal Blu Ray.

The prices these go for on eBay makes me suspect of the Amazon prices.

Blegh, lol. I wish WB would get more behind this release and make everything clearer. The artwork for the existing 4ks was so half-arsed, these are the releases it should’ve gotten from the start for 4k.

I very much agree.

I don't get why these weren't released in America officially.
