The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion Thread - - - - - - - Part 156

I'm thinking of biting the bullet and buying the whole trilogy in the 4K box set versions -

I have Returns and it is an incredible set. These are the definitive versions of these films, if I can get them.

It won't be cheap.

I'd also love to have the '89.
I want these so bad, and I might just have to do it. I am curious though why the UK seems to be getting the best versions of certain 4ks haha. Like im pretty sure they got an insanely cool set for the Raimi trilogy too.

They gave the same treatment to my favourite film too - Casablanca. Glad it's not just comic book films.

Damn. I have the Nolan 4K collection which includes The Dark Knight Trilogy, but I'm tempted to buy these ones as well.

Oh man, seeing the MTV bug there made me have to dig up this gem.

This trailer (or I guess sizzle reel really) was and is still friggin' fire. Such a shame we don't have a proper full quality version of it.

Man, that final bit with selina saying "that you should be as afraid of him as I am" followed by Bane walking and the fade to white still gives me goosebumps.

I'd bite if I didn't have my Beast Kingdom Batman (Dark Knight Trilogy) and Beast Kingdom Heath Joker.

Both of which are awesome with some killer accessories.

I hope so. We are all eagerly waiting for the Coleman Reese collectible. :o

I'm betting there will be a 2nd wave with the first Bale Batsuit and variants of Joker, Bane, and some additional characters.

They did an Arkham wave and then did an Additional Riddler and Earth 2 Batman so maybe we get Catwoman and Ras like that

I just love how many connections Begins and Rises have between each other.

The exact same music plays in Begins when Gordon puts the coat over young Bruce's shoulders and when Batman gives him the coat speech in Rises.

Both Ra's Al Ghul and Talia die in the exact same way (driving a vehicle pointed to a specific direction, that eventually crashes) and again over the exact same piece of music in both films.

Both Begins and Rises have the same musical cues in the beginning of their end credits as well. TDK's end credits are a bit different and deviate from that.

Lucius and Bruce have "it comes in black" dialogues in both Begins and Rises.

The Batcave is present in both Begins and Rises and missing in TDK.

Ra's' "I once had a wife" scene from Begins is shown in Rises too.

The Molossus track is present in both Begins (tumbler chase) and Rises (police chase of Batman), while missing from TDK.

I got the old Hot Toys Catwoman figure the other day. Got it for a steal on eBay and surprisingly, she came brand new, box wasn’t even open!
I’ve wanted her for a long time, but I never liked her eyes. Luckily, I found someone locally who does 1/6 repaints, so I sent the head sculpt over to get her eyes repainted. She also repainted the brows. Night and day difference. I am absolutely in love with this figure and she is easily top 3 in my collection.

I want to put together some Nolanized versions of other characters. So far I got a Harley and currently workin on a Poison Ivy.

Yeah, I know at the time some fans were let down by the similarities to Begins and felt Rises was just a Begins 2.0 but I think the connections really help the movies gel as a trilogy, as TDK was really its own beast that pretty much dwarfed Begins in a lot of ways. Rises went a long way in bridging the gap and closing the loop. Even if it does so at the expense of being as strong of a standalone film as the other two. It really prioritizes being an ending which means it has to embrace the other movies, especially Begins.

I enjoy some good symmetry in storytelling though. There's even more subtle stuff like Batman walking on the ice that feels like a bit of a callback to his training. Or when Selina gives the kid the apple it also reminds me of that moment with Bruce in Begins ("first time I stole so I wouldn't starve..). A lot of full circle moments all throughout the movie.

Even Bruce/Alfred's fallout after the big chase sequence feels like a follow-up to the similar beat in Begins (which is the first time Alfred shows his concern that Bruce is getting lost in the monster). That's the thing for me, it's not just a matter of repeating stuff, it's referencing itself but for the purpose of tracking the characters' journeys, while adding new layers.

The way the Bruce/Alfred relationship is handled in the whole trilogy is so good. At first glance it almost seems a bit odd how openly supportive Alfred is of Bruce's mission, and downright militant in TDK about what Bruce needs to do-- but as the layers peel off, you realize he really never wanted any of this for him. Didn't even want Bruce to come back to Gotham in the first place. TDKR just does an amazingly good job at delivering emotional payoffs to everything in the first two movies. Begins and TDK have their emotional moments, but I think in general they're a bit more emotionally reserved. TDKR really opens up the emotional floodgates just by naturally following through the consequences of the previous movies. The scene of Alfred crying at Thomas' grave hits so hard, yes because Caine is giving an incredible performance in that moment but also because of all the groundwork laid to get to that moment.

TDKR is a great film and the more I watch it, the more I love it. It had the impossible mission of following TDK, and I think it was as successful as it possibly could have been.

It gave us a really nice closing chapter and feels like a completed story. I do think there was still room to explore a bit more if they wanted to, but they gave us a very satisfying ending.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s underrated, but I definitely think it’s slept on. So many great performances in this one. There really aren’t many trilogies where all 3 entries are this strong.

Those opening titles go hard... happy we got something simple again with Reeves.

Just throw me in, I don't need 3 minutes of opening titles.

Even though they've gone out of fashion, I do enjoy opening title sequences in older films as a means of basking in the score.

But there was also something really simple and powerful about just starting the movies with the bat-symbol filling the screen in an interesting way and then book-ending it with the title reveal at the end.

I love them in Bond, of course... and if they built them into the narrative in a way (can't think of any at the moment sadly).
