The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion Thread - - - - - - - Part 156

I honestly doubt the validity of that.

Nolan seems to be a very much one project at a time. At least with the Batman films, he seemed to take awhile to come around to another one then thinking of a new plot.

He says he made the first two thinking they could be his last.

Agreed. You either take Nolan at his word that he wasn’t thinking about sequels or you don’t, and I would say especially with Knight there is ample evidence that he wasn’t. If he was there’s no way he would’ve put the full Harvey to Two-Face arc in the movie and then killed him off at the end. So I think the conjecture around Joker’s hypothetical role in the third film is overblown. I have no doubt he would have been in the film had Ledger not passed but I also don’t think there were any concrete unalterable plans to include him mapped put beforehand. As Rises exists now there really would be no place to put him; the entire narrative of the movie would have to be changed.

This. He absolutely would have been in TDKR had the tragedy not occurred but it wouldn't have been TDKR I don't think, it would have been a completely different story.

It's actually sort of bizarre to even imagine another movie with Heath's Joker in it. It's such a legendary role that the thought of more is so intriguing and so deeply sad.

I wouldn't want to see Bale in the muddled mess the Flash film seems to be. I'm even conflicted that this is Keaton's return.

Someone said it better than me about The Flash -

“DC is such a mess. DC: 'Here’s a new Flash poster. But it suggests Batman. But not the Batman from our last Batman movie. It maybe has the Batman from our first Batman movie. But also the Batman from 5 years ago. Also last year we brought Superman back from 5 years ago. But Superman will inexplicably be absent from Flash. And also we’ll have a brand new Batman soon. And a new Superman.'"
I am really excited for this movie, cuz misbehavior aside, Ezra was very good on the SnyderCut. Plus, freakin' Michael Keaton returning, + more Batfleck, + Muschietti being a great director, + cameos madness (who doesn't enjoy it?) I think it will be a very good adventure afterall.
Have been said that, this is really a mess of universe, and Gunn's future slate doesn't clarify at all... Really doubt Bale will be involved with this.

I loved Affleck as Batman. Though, I find the fans who keep advocating for him to return and troll Pattinson fans regularly are insufferable, at this point.

That said, can I really blame them for not letting go?

We're years removed from the Whedon-Cut, a year into a new Batman series with a new actor - and Affleck's Batman is yet again relevant and in an upcoming film.

It's hard to move on when the Snyder-Cut and now a Flash film keeps bringing Affleck back.

There's been no clear break and WB keeps flirting with Affleck's Batman.

It's no wonder certain fans can't move on and give up hope.

I feel like a curmudgeon lol and probably in the minority but The Flash trailer was...weird for me. Hearing Keaton say "Yeah ..I'm Batman" is cute and does bring a smile to my face but at the same time it is was pretty goofy having him bomb the camera in closeup, almost giving vibes of Kilmer's smile to the camera. It just felt a bit...hollow for me.

Based on the trailer there's just no trace of anything resembling the mystique of his Batman from the Burton films here when his Batman is on screen. CGI Keaton is gonna take some getting used to too. The other problem for me is it's just hard to see how the emotional stakes are going to work when I have a hard time taking Ezra's dramatic moments seriously. These were all the things I was concerned about from the start.

I still am looking forward to the movie and
hope it tells a great story that's able to overcome all of the stuff that is working against it for me, but sadly that trailer didn't get me more hyped. It made me dial back my expectations. I am sure I will have fun with it, but when you start throwing around terms like "one of the best superhero movies of all time" like Gunn did, it makes me wonder how it will warrant that description. I really want the movie to win me over because if this is the one movie Keaton is returning for, I want it to count.

I feel like there's so much hyperbole these days when it comes to the "one of the best superhero films ever" statement. It's like people are trying to will that into becoming true instead of letting the movie actually do it. Honestly, I don't think any superhero film since 2017 can really be considered one of the best comic book movies. I'm tired of hearing "best since TDK" too, which it's said about everything haha.

As for the movie, as I said in the other thread, I think it's gonna be a lot of fun, and dodgy cgi aside, it's working for me overall. I got really hyped seeing Keaton! But I think people putting the "one of the best ever" label on it is just wrong, especially without having even seen the movie. that's starting to speak to a larger problem within the genre where most of the movies don't come close to that quality and people are in denial about it so they hype it up. Move comes out, it doesn't measure up, and then you have the defenders of it trying to tear down the best, blah blah blah haha. But will The Flash be one of those movies? who knows. I just want a good movie at this point and if the trailer is anything to go by, at least it'll give me that.

It just gave me a greater appreciation for Rises. Placing Batman in a well lit environment and making it look good is insanely hard to do. And the flash proves it. Batman looked so dumb in some of those shots. And Rises had Batman in broad daylight. Well done Pfister.

This is just how it's been for a long time.

Something is either S-Tier, mega-hype worthy perfection and the second coming...or it's the 'worst of da worst evurrrr' F- - - 'GARBAGE'.

I think this is relevant to Rises, too.

I understand Gunn is basically a spokeperson for DC now and has skin in the game, but it kinda rubbed me the wrong way that he said that. As you said, let the movie do the talking. Cause that's a very big claim. And I kinda let that inflate my expectations, especially in terms of how it relates to how I would prefer Keaton's Batman to be handled and the trailer just showed me something very different. That's on me, but it's just an adjustment I have to make.

As I said in the other thread though, glad you dug it, I'm keeping an open mind but I'm definitely shifting back to more of a "this is gonna be dumb fun with some nostalgia" expectation vs. expecting this to be an amazing film top to bottom that I'll want to rewatch for years to come. Which is probably for the best. I still hope the movie is better than I'm expecting though. I think the only difference between me and you with the trailer is you were probably being more realistic with your expectations.

On that topic, Id say this shot is the one that I'm perplexed on. I don't think he's the part of this shot that looks off, it's supergirl when she hits the guy. Plus the slow mo makes it more obvious I think.

Porn doing a good thing.

It looks like a video game and it shouldn't.

The whole shot feels a bit "Matrix Reloaded" to me, haha. And I say that with love as I'm a fan of Reloaded, but considering this is 20 years later...yeah. You're right, he's not the worst part of the shot but I think it's the combo of seeing him in sunny mountainous location in a shot where everything else looks super video game-y...it's a tough sell for me. It feels a LOT more like Snyder than I'd like. Still hoping that the movie is good enough to overcome that though.

To be fair, that scene in Reloaded was pretty bad even then.

Yet all of the cgi in Oblivion still looks great 19 years later.

Funny that DC_Cinematic suddenly cares about quality when Zaddy isn’t the one directing. That sub….

I said this in the flash thread, but I actually dig the almost camp like delivery of Keaton's line. The presence of the blue and grey suits present for both Batman and all of that is a nice contrast to the dark and serious approach that Reeves is doing. I don't know, it feels kinda refreshing for that kind of movie.

Christian Bale Batman retired at the end of his Trilogy and was replaced by the Police Guy with the name of Robin there were implications that Robin would be the New Batman in Nolan World maybe if Bale Batman appears in the Flash he will be a "Variant" he will not be the same Batman from the Nolan Movies similar with Hugh Jackman Wolverine in Deadpool 3

I don’t know, I have a hard time believing that Bruce would stay retired for the rest of his life. But maybe he could have come back to Gotham in a mentor role to John Blake?

Maybe this is just me trying to convince myself that there are more stories to tell in the Nolan world hahaha

He could mentor, yeah. I can see that.

I love this trilogy. But I also love it because it had the guts to conclude. To end.

A rare thing, these days.
And I'd rather it stay the amazing trilogy it is.

I agree. It’s nice to have a solid beginning, middle, and end.
I would have loved to have seen more of Catwoman and some other villains, but I am happy they ended on their terms.
