The Xbox One - Part 3

They won't unless they want an Xbox thrown through their office window.

They probably have to do it with a patch since they've already started mass production. Presumably the next lines will just have the new settings already set up.

I say give it a month or two. Microsoft said they would never change their mind on DRMs. If people still speak with their wallets & still dont pre order & Microsoft sees the numbers. That $399 no Kinect will come in the long run

Doing my Preorder this Sat.

Used game- do not care, I do not buy used and do not care about them when I am done.
Internet connection - do not care, I have good internet.
500 price tag- $500 for something I will use for 3-5 years (I spent more fixing my car in each of the last 2 months) .

I'm curious, for all the people who were outraged by the Xbox One, how exactly were they worried they'd be affected by it?

For me, the DRM and always-online were annoyances and things I just found wrong. I can't say how great an impact they would have had on me, but the fact that the option to buy used and play offline weren't options really bothered me. Still, what's keeping me away from the Xbone is the Kinect and the price-tag.

I just find it interesting since many of the people I've personally interacted with who were outraged didn't actually have any personal reason to hate on the Xbox... In fact, many of them are people who would have benefitted enormously from Family sharing and being able to resell your game license digitally. I find it interesting because I think the war of consoles that's happening across all the social networks isn't quite an accurate reflection of the reality of the paradigm between the two consoles.

I don't know about that. People still seem pretty pi**ed.

Have there been any fun quirky games announced yet for the Xbox one? They seem to be all shoot em ups at the moment

There were a few, I thought. There was one about a boy who has to save his brother or something that looked charming. There's project Spark, Minecraft, Fantasia and that one called 'Below'.

And I know people are 'pissed' but most of the people complaining about things like always online clearly have the internet to go online and *****... So I wonder whether signing in for 30 secs once a day would have truly affected them.

My point is, most of the outrage seems to be on principle rather than as a direct reaction to being genuinely affected.

And I hope Kinect is something MS continues to push and develop. Like I said before, we've been connected to controllers for decades. If the only evolution we can bring to gaming is adding more buttons, that's pathetic.

No need to fix what isn't broken. There's nothing wrong with buttons and it works for a reason

Except now gaming is becoming alienating. Telling a new gamer the functions of 10 buttons is a turnoff. Casual games with motion control have an audience that shouldn't be just be ignored or looked down on. Kinect has a lot of potential and the best way to develop for it is to promote it. Can't think of a better promotion than having one with every unit.

I think it's much more likely that they will develop ways to integrate things like the disc install and digital sharing alongside the DRM free discs, just add it gradually the way it should have been done.

I don't see that as a problem. The people who are turned off by buttons aren't playing the games that developers are making and throwing in motion controls doesn't work. I've yet to see a traditional game function with just Kinect. I've seen it with Move and Wii and they tend to be barely passable. And those don't eliminate buttons; just add a bunch of gestures to memorize which bring on their own level of complication and alienation. Only unique titles seem to somewhat be palatable but publishers aren't going to pour millions into Kinect development bc the profit return isn't there. A Dance Central is rare. Shovelware tends to be the norm and basically done to fund their bigger non-motion centric games. Besides the attach rate tends to be low with "casual gamers". They tend to be satisfied with a few games and then move on and aren't buying games in drives like traditional gamers. They aren't were the money is at

"Shovelware" has an audience. People like workout and dance games and sports games they can play with people actually in the room, not online. That's how I plan to use the Kinect. When I have people over and we all wanna play together. Bowling, tennis, archery, etc. That type of gaming shouldn't be frowned upon like a step back.

I don't know about me being outraged. But, I was really turned off by the always online. Internet where I live is ******. Every now and again, I wind up with no internet for a day or a little over a day.

The truth is, though, Microsoft did a horrible job of explaining things. They never sold people on the benefits of what they were giving up. I mean, someone must have gotten fired for the PR disaster, and just the really horrible messaging they delivered.

They never even tried to clarify things for people at E3, for example.

Microsoft changes Xbox One policies after intense outcry

EW YORK—Microsoft rolled back a much-criticized requirement that its upcoming Xbox One gaming console be regularly connected to the Internet and made clear that there will be no limitations on sharing games.

Microsoft Corp. has been criticized for vague statements about whether it will allow Xbox One buyers to play second-hand software. Gamers also expressed distaste for a requirement that the console be connected to the Internet once every 24 hours.

Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment business, said in a blog post Wednesday that an Internet connection will no longer be required to play games on the Xbox One after its initial setup, and users can share and play games like they have on the Xbox 360.

Mattrick said the changes are in response to feedback Microsoft received since unveiling plans for the console in May.

“You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you,” he wrote. “Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.”

In a shot aimed at Microsoft, rival Sony Corp. announced during last week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles that its upcoming PlayStation 4 will not require a regular Internet connection to work and that the company won’t try to restrict used game sales.

Both consoles will go on sale later this year, the Xbox One at $499 and the PS4 at $399

So I wonder if all they had to was flip a switch to turn some of these features off or not, haha. Nice to hear they actually listened to their fans but I wouldn't be surprised if fans still refused to buy one considering those policies being there in the first place.

Yeah, I think a lot of the damage has already been done to the Xbox brand thanks to this snafu. While it's good for the gamer that Microsoft has done this, in the end, it's very hard to earn forgiveness after they essentially gave a big middle finger and "**** you" to the consumer base with their initial Xbox One plans. IMO, Microsoft really needs to do some Sony styled hardcore ass kissing.

Have any of you read some of the comments on Kotaku about this switch...Or..Anywhere else?

People are CRAZY! They're whining because they can't share their digital games with 10 people now and they had the crazy idea that the digital purchases would be cheaper like Steam. This is a step in the right direction. I'm still going PS4. They won't have much time to work on software and kinks and the price is still 100 dollars higher. It isn't ruled out for me in the future completely now though. All I will need is a price drop and possibly a Halo.

Agreed. I honestly think the "Well...Go buy a 360" remark was far worse than Sony's "You'll work TWO jobs to own a PS3."

Cliffy B the guy behind Gears of War doesn't like the 180 by Microsoft. Saying that he doesn't like money going to gamestop instead of the people that actually made the game. He also said that in the future games that can be downloaded to your HD at launch instead of a physical disk, will likely offer special things. So that means you get a digital version so you won't have a physical one you can sell or lend to someone.

We all know the future of gaming is digital...But there's no need to FORCE that yet. It still needs time. Someday everyone will be on Fios and that will be possible..Until then...Give us choice.

I'm sure the people who were defending Microsoft, developers and fans, probably feel betrayed.

The future is indeed digital. But all of the restrictions Microsoft had in place was not needed

Turn on Console
Download game with Disc
Play it

Maybe have some different rules with this stuff. But everything Microsoft did was wrong. The digital future does not need to be anything like that
