The Xbox One - Part 3

Honestly there is just no real reason for them to offer a $400 Kinect-less model at launch. Both the PS4 and the Xbox One will sell out of their launch quantities, it's guaranteed. Neither will have to reevaluate their strategy until after the Holidays.

Yes but very few gamers are buying both consoles at launch. Many gamers will buy one early and that will mean they are stuck with their early choice for the generation or they buy the 2nd one for a much cheaper price a number of years later. The Kinect-less verision should only represent additional sales on top of what they were already going to sell at $500. They're not losing out on guaranteed launch revenue in the way they would be with an actual price reduction.

For this reason, I honestly didnt think they had to do a 180 on so many of their policies/features. I think the main thing keeping gamers away was the whole used game debacle. Once they reversed that, things started to look up for the system and I think it would have sold out as well. You are right in that they dont need to drop the price just yet bc people are willing to spend $500 for it. A drop likely wont happen till sales start to slump

speaking of Kinect, have they said if Kinect will function like a Webcam or video cam recorder?

say you wanted to record yourself doing something to post that video on your site or Youtube.

would you be able to use Kinect to record yourself??

But, developers would know for certain that everyone has one and would develop for it. Otherwise it'll just get the same shovelware that Kinect did.
Even with Kinect being put in every Xbox One, developers still will ignore it. Every Wii was packed with a Wii Remote and look at how well they treated that. Developers so far have shown complete and utter disdain for peripherals like Kinect, and the PlayStation Move, and the Wii Remote and the Xbox One being packed with Kinect 2.0 isn't going to change that.

And frankly without the PlayStation 4 and PC having a Kinect like devices, publishers aren't going to be willing to invest in it either. Third party publishers tend to develop for the lowest common denominator and typically want to put out the exact same version of a game for all platforms. Unless Microsoft or Sony throw money for some extra content or to support their peripherals, publishers don't really go the extra mile in taking advantage of the special features that a console exclusively offers, only first party publishers do so. And think about it this way why would publishers want to invest in features that will only show up on one version of a game on a console that is looking more and more like it will be the #2 next gen console? It's just too limited.

Yeah but its not like its going to be way behind the ps4. Theyll both be neck and neck all throughout this generation. You're acting like its going to be the Wii U. There'll be more quality games for the kinect this time around just because it works ridiculously better this time around. Developers can actually work with it now and make what they want instead of being restricted by what it can do

I don't think it'll be way behind, but if you're a publisher do you really want to be investing money into taking full advantage of something that has a limited audience? No. Publishers didn't want to invest in Kinect because only 1/3 of Xbox 360 owners had it. 2/3 of 360 owners didn't have it and no PC or Wii or PS3 owners had them.

If Kinect were a platform that had support on all platforms, then I think that it would have had a much more successful run. And I see Kinect 2.0 having the same problem, with no PS4, PC, or Wii U support. The Xbox One being the #2 platform only makes the idea even less receptive.

I have no problem with Kinect being only developed by first party studious. Just another benefit of having an X1. Unique titles. The fact that it can scan your actual appearance into a game is reason enough for me to use it.

Does anyone know how extensive MS's deal is with the NFL? I just saw that Sony lost Sunday Ticket. If I can watch football on X1, I might actually be willing to cancel my cable and have just internet. Live sports is really the only thing keeping me from doing so. I assume Hulu Plus would cover most of my scripted show needs.

see......that's the stuff that bothers me.

I can see the advantage in some games, but I just feel stuff like that is too invasive.

that's why if I do get the X1, and it still includes Kinect, I will just leave Kinect in the box.

Just do what the East Germans did, put a tablecloth over it.

I still love that joke about it shutting down your Xbox if its sees you watching a movie with more than four people.

We'll see. Remember when you could scan your skateboard with Kinect and use it in-game? Yeah, that never happened.

That's actually a really good idea.

Here's some info about what you asked for, I didn't watch the video, but it might explain some things:

I've had my 360 going on 5 years this fall, and I've never experienced the red rings. (knocks on wood)

Microsoft Reduces Xbox One Launch Territories From 21 To 13
At E3, Microsoft announced that the Xbox One would rollout in 21 different countries this November. That is no longer the case.

Eight countries have been cut from the list. "While we wish we could launch Xbox One simultaneously in these markets, there are many factors that determine the timing of specific market launches," reads the announcement on Xbox Wire. "This includes work to localize the Xbox One dash, incorporate additional voice and languages, and build partnerships to bring apps and meaningful local content to each country."

The launch countries are confirmed to be:

  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • France
  • Germany
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Mexico
  • Spain
  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • New Zealand

The countries that have been bumped to 2014 are:

  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Russia
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

Those countries will be compensated with a free packed-in game. That title has yet to be identified. We've reached out to Microsoft to confirm that residents of these eight territories can import a console without ill effect.

Im guessing that they want as many systems as possible in their biggest market the U.S.

Xbox One Season Pass Guarantee

Today, Microsoft has announced the Season Pass Guarantee program. It's a fairly straightforward concept: if you purchase a season pass for any participating Xbox 360 game, you also get the same season pass for the Xbox One version of that game at no charge.

The key in the above statement is the word "participating". Yes, it will be up to publishers if they want to join this program. Key publishers who are already on board for this include Activision, Electronic Arts, and Ubisoft. More publishers and titles will be announced as we approach the Xbox One release.

For some of you, this may not matter. If you are planning on buying a particular game for both systems, then you stand to benefit from this new program. Let's say a game is scheduled to release for the Xbox 360 before the launch of the Xbox One. You've got your new game, bought the season pass, and are all set for any DLC that may come your way. Later, you become the owner of an Xbox One and decide that you'd really enjoy owning the same title for it (achievements do stack, after all). If that's the case, you don't have to buy another season pass.

Microsoft offered Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts as examples of games you may consider buying for both consoles. Both will be included in the Season Pass program.

As an achievement junkie, this is exciting news for me.

I know Sony is going to have their Gamescom conference online, is Microsoft going to have theirs online too? If so, where can I watch it?

Looks good but with Kinect stuff I need to see/try it in action. Looking forward to what Kinect 2 can do anyway & the 1st Kinect Sports game was a lot of fun.

CVG Sources: Microsoft to reveal 'major game' comes free with Xbox One

At moment this would be for Europe only though.
The free game confirmed to be FIFA 14 in Europe for XB1 preorders. Was going to buy it anyway but probably not near launch.

How Xbox One's self-published game pricing works - Microsoft determines final RRP

How does this affect you, the buyer? Well, Microsoft's retaining control here will allow it to adjust game prices should the games in question become cheaper on other platforms. Developers won't be cheated of their fair share in the process, because Microsoft will always pay the higher of either the wholesale price or a standard industry revenue split, thought to be 70-30.
"Microsoft's store uses a retail model, so we set the final price of the game while developers set the wholesale price," Charla told CVG. "When a self-published game is sold, developers get either their wholesale price back, or a standard industry percentage of the retail price, whichever is higher."

"Let's just say you, the developer, set your wholesale price at $5, and we decide to set the retail price at $10, for each sale you would get the standard industry split [probably 70%] on that $10. But we really want to work with developers to make sure the prices are where they're meant to be."
