The Xbox One - Part 6

If the Wii U's discs are anything like the Wii's, it's probably a custom disc of some kind with the specs of a Blu-ray disc. The reason is easy. This way they don't have to pay patents to other companies, and they eliminate the cost of a Blu-ray player from the console's manufacturing price. They did the same thing with the GCN with the mini-discs, and the Wii with their "optic" discs. It's a cost-cutting measure to keep their manufacturing price down. It's only really indirectly related to Sony. Even if another company, like Sanyo or something, owned the Blu-ray patent, they'd still probably do the same thing.

Anyone else appreciate the ironic fact that the Xbone went from being the DRM box to the pirate box with matroska file support?

what gives you the idea sony & nintendo hate each other? wasn't the first playstation the result of sony wanting to try things out for themselves after helping nintendo out here and there?

No, it's more complicated than that. Sony worked with Nintendo on the SNES (I forgot exactly what their role was). The idea of the PlayStation originated as a disc drive for the SNES, but it evolved into the idea of a partnership between the two for a new console. Nintendo ended up passing on the PlayStation design and went with cartridges over discs, and signed with Panasonic to help design the N64 as Sony went out onto their own.

There's conflicting reports about what actually happened. The most common story you hear is that Nintendo back-stabbed Sony by signing with Panasonic without their knowledge and was based around a last minute decision to go with cartridge instead of CDs. But I have read before that Sony did actually submit a prototype to Nintendo for the PlayStation, but Nintendo was so unimpressed with it that it made them doubt the potential of disc-based gaming.

Do they hate each other, though? Eh, I doubt it. Their businesses, and that kind of stuff is generally impersonal. Even if there was animosity, it's been so long ago it's probably just a footnote to both. But you never know, I guess.

Fun fact, this causes some issues with porting the SNES games to the GBA. Guess who made the SNES sound chip? Sony.

Yes, that's right. I'd forgot, Sony designed the sound chip. I want to say that maybe there was something else, too, but I can't remember now.

From what I recall, Nintendo and Sony originally agreed to making a disc add on for the SNES, which then evolved into an actual console, the "Play Station". The Play Station apparently actually had quite a few working prototypes (more than a hundred), the fate of which has never been revealed.

The deal fell apart due to licensing disputes, and Nintendo tried to work out a similar deal with Philips. As a good will gesture, Nintendo licensed Zelda to them, for their CD-I ... "console". The relationship never really went anywhere though.

That, coupled with Nintendo's insane fear of piracy drove them to stick with cartridges.

I think the licensing issue was something along the lines that Sony wanted to get the rights to the SNES CD titles that would be released while Nintendo retained the rights to the cartridge games.

But really, my guess as to why it all really went apart was cartridge vs CD. Licensing issues could've been worked out or Nintendo could've kept developing it's own CD-ROM tech, but if the story about Nintendo being unimpressed with Sony's PlayStation prototype (or one of them), and the bombing of the CD-i (Philips lost over a billion on it), I can see where they may have bailed on the idea. In retrospect, a horrible decision despite a lot of good stuff that came out of the N64, but you know, that's retrospect.

Also, there was a Mario game for the CD-i.

I thought the X1 could already play CDs??

by the way, i'm pretty sure I heard the titanfall bundle selling a million units the first week - I don't see how those types of sales are considered "diddly squat."
How did it sell 1 million bundles in one week when MS confirmed it did 311K for that month?

As you can tell from the link, the PS4 still outsold it that month, which is the comparison you were making in terms of what will do better in an upcoming month where both see new releases. So yes I stand by my statement that bundling TF with the X1 did diddly squat to change the sales outcome

well, the fact that the bundle is $450 instead of $400 just tells me that the game isn't free in the bundle. I don't get why they would get a percentage in a situation like that.

and yeah, it's likely Sony paid destiny a certain amount which is a first for them; they lost exclusive after exclusive last generation and didn't think for a moment it would be important to pay one or two developers to keep some. however, i'm pretty sure the exclusive DLC is also timed.
bc its a bundle and its a bundle that contains products made by two different companies. Sony doesnt get to just keep all of the $450 (minus fees associated with getting it to a retail space). Bungie gets a cut of that, depending on what their agreement is.

well I guess that was some lousy nintendo judgement, because that was the first of 2 straight generations that playstation crushed the **** out of the competition.

and yeah there may still be conflicting stories but yours sums it up good enough. i think nintendo is far from becoming the next dreamcast but i welcome the idea of mario being on xbone & ps4

okay so the xbone bundle sold 311k the first week, but according to this, the game itself probably counting the bundle sold a million in the month. speaking of which, i don't know why EA or whoever published the game would be unhappy with those numbers.

it's fine if you still think that is "diddly squat" but if the game sold 1 million, 30% of which through a bundle... to me that ain't diddly squat man. and it's the middle of august now, the xbone has a bigger install base so I think the so bundle will do okay.

yeah but how is it any different than buying a ps4 and buying destiny separately? you're saving $10, that is all. I don't know man, I don't think this bundle will be as popular as the 2 xbone bundle's coming out in the same time frame.

so, if you hook up an external drive, can you set that as the default storage for the system? so, when you save anything, it automatically saves it to the external drive?

Yea I wondered that same thing myself and Bensta is correct, you can set the external as the primary HDD. Iv even seen where people said their games and apps are loading faster off their external HDD.

ah, good to hear. thanks.

but the OS/UI is still stored on the internal drive, right?

also, if I get one of those small/slim portable external drives, would it be ok/safe to plug it in the back USB port and then rest the drive on top of the X1?

I'll probably rest mine along the sides.. The X1 is super ventilated but I'd still be too nervous about setting anything on top of if, haha.

Yea, to my knowledge it is.

Yea, I don't see why that'd be a problem.

Hah, i leave the Kinect on top of the system without any issues, but its at the front, rather than the rear. Im assuming theres more heat towards the back of the console. Ill do what your talking about and just let the external sit behind the console.
