Is there a chance you would buy Scorpio at launch? In that case it would definitely be worth passing on the S and waiting for it (even more so as you don't care about 4k media at the moment).

it would depend on the launch price of the Scorpio and my situation at the time.

If it's $500 or more, then I'll probably wait for a price drop.

If it's heavily dependent on owning a 4k display and/or a VR unit, then I'll probably wait until all that tech drops in price.

And, if I've already upgraded to the Neo and/or bought a NX before the Scorpio launches, then I'll probably wait on the Scorpio or pass on it if I don't really need it.

I'm analysing my budget and it's either the Scorpio, 4k monitor, VR set and home theather or a new little house of my own.

I'm kinda disappointed that the HoloLens didn't make an E3 return, I hope that's compatible with the Scorpio too or does that not need a device to work?

good conversation between Major Nelson and Phil Spencer about the X1 S and Project Scorpio and the new "family approach" to the consoles.

[YT]QtFUTiwPcQs[/YT]

at around the 6:00 mark, Major Nelson asks Spencer the key question: "Why should someone buy the S now when Scorpio is coming next year? Who is the Scorpio for?"

Spencer basically replies that the Scorpio will be their high end machine for those who want 4K gaming, who own a 4K tv, who want to get into the high end VR.

You choose which console in the family you want based on your budget and needs.

So, it seems, if you ( like me ) don't even own a 4K display ( and thus can't play 4K games anyways ) or if you don't own a high end VR machine, the Scorpio really isn't for you.

also, a video look at the new Slim.

I'm glad to see that there are still 2 USB ports in the back in addition to the one in the front.

Yea that's key. I wouldn't want my 4TB HDD taking up a front port. Granted im skipping this for the Scorpio, but iv claimed I'd skip certain consoles before and I ended up buying them

yeah. the front port can be used for something that you plug/unplug frequently, like a media USB stick. I used the side port on the original X1 for that purpose.

the back ports can be used for more permanent fixtures, like an external drive.

oh, and it seems the Slim does NOT have a dedicated Kinect port. you have to use an adapter to plug Kinect into one of the USB ports. seems like owners of Kinect may be able to get that adapter for free.

yet another sign that MS ( and X1 ) has pretty much abandoned the Kinect, which I still think was the biggest mistake of the X1 launch.

Add in the fact that with the new update you don't need Kinect for the voice commands. You can use a headset.

yep.

anyways, I really do think the Slim design is a thing of beauty. The white color just makes it pop and stand out more than just boring all black.

If the Scorpio wasn't coming out next year, I think I'd be all over that 2TB model come August.

However, I'm not so sure right now. Kind of want to see what the Neo will look like and learn what it's official specs are and when it will be released. Same with the NX.

Not a fan of the white. I prefer black, as it matches the vast majority of electronics out there. My TV is black, my sound system is black, my Wii U is black, my 360 is black, and my cabinets are black. This thing would just look odd, standing out like a sore thumb.

^^^^Im sure they will sell different color/pattern variants down the line but it would have been good to come in two colors to start. People went crazy when they first had the white as a limited edition bundle with some games, so Im sure they probably are trying to make the black a coveted item

LOL..I remember back in the early days when Mattrick tried to act as if it wasnt possible to do voice commands with a headset and the Kinect was what made that experience possible

The death of the Kinect is a good thing for the future of Xbox. It was fine as an optional extra but a disaster when pushed into being an integral function as well as the extra $100 it put on the price tag for the weaker console.

another interview with Spencer where he basically says if you don't own a 4K tv, the Scorpio isn't for you.

if this is all true, then the more I hear about this, the more I feel confident in buying a Slim this year and not upgrading to Scorpio and a 4K tv until around 2018 or later. By then, the price of the Scorpio, 4Ktvs, and VR units will have come down some.

I wonder if this will also be true for the Neo, where it's not really for you if you don't own a 4K tv.

Unless the oculus drops in price from $600 to at least $400, I've lost interest in the scorpio because I don't even have a 4k tv to enjoy 4k gaming and my biggest interest in VR right now is the HoloLens.

I'd go with the slim but as I've said before, I'll only do it if my current normal xbox breaks down and my insurance on it ends.

^ yeah, if your current X1 is working fine and you still have insurance, I'd stick with that.

The key for me, now, is to see whether the Neo will offer any significant performance boost for a non 4ktv owner.

You're losing one of the main selling points of both Scorpio and Neo without a 4k TV. But by the release date 4kTVs will be much cheaper.

I think those comments are aimed to support the "no one left behind" motto, that regular X1, X1 S, and Scorpio will run the games in the same way and that is not stupid to invest in a system now when in a year a replacement will be available.

There is no way that the Scorpio with its powerful hardware won't at least improve framerates, or loading times. Not sure if devs will be allowed to add better effects to games in Scorpio though (looks like they won't be allowed, as with PS4 Neo)

yeah. but the Scorpio itself will most likely be quite expensive at launch. so I don't see myself getting that at launch anyways until that drops in price. So, I'll probably wait a few years. So if I get a Slim this year, I won't upgrade to the Scorpio for another 2 or 3 years or so.

and if the Neo will offer a performance/visual boost even for non 4K tvs, then that would be a selling point for me to get a Neo instead of the Slim. Since the Slim is not meant to offer any kind of performance boost.

How many consoles do you think you'd have the budget (and will) for? If the Slim has enough to justify you buying it I would hold off on the other 2 till you have a 4kTV.

right now, I only have the budget for 1. maybe 2, if/when I trade in my PS4. The 2nd console will probably be the NX.

If I get the Slim now, I won't be getting the Neo. I may still get the NX next year. Then in 2 or 3 years or so, I'll trade in the Slim and PS4 for the Scorpio.

so at most, only 2 consoles - MS and Nintendo or Sony and Nintendo. but not all 3 and not both MS and Sony.
