Ah good, you've done your research properly now.

This is useful to me too as I don't need the 2nd 4K Player and you've made me appreciate my 4K player more as I hadn't even tried a blu-ray disc in it before. Only the HDR gaming and slight graphical upgrade while playing Gears and Mass Effect might have swung it for me but I don't feel in a rush to make a decision. And the longer I leave it the more likely I just wait till Nov next year and double up on Scorpio.
Do you think you will keep your 4K player? I initially thought you had only bought it to test out your upscaling theory with the intention of returning it straight after.

I bought the 4K player with the intention of returning either it or the S.

and at this point, I'm strongly leaning towards keeping the Samsung player and returning the S. Cuz right now, the S doesn't do all of what was advertised and it doesn't meet all of my needs in a 4K player. Though I like the X1 exclusives, keeping it alone for the gaming aspect isn't enough for me, because I say I valued it's all-in-one media function more than the gaming.
So, I'll probably return the S tomorrow night or Wednesday, and then upgrade to the Pro next month. Which is what my initial plan was when I got my 4K tv........lol.
As for the Scorpio, well, I'm less likely to get it now. Clearly, I haven't had good luck with the Xbox One.......lol.
I mean, 3 different years ( 2014, 2015, 2016 ), 3 different models, and 3 different technical issues ( noise, flashing lines, network issues ). Plus, this last time is even more disappointing because I really love the look of the S but now I feel mislead about it's features. and that false/misleading advertisement really bugs me.
But in each instance, the initial joys and elations of using the system turned into headaches and frustrations with one issue or another.
So, you can't say I haven't given the Xbox One a chance.....lol. I know I may take some heat from the posters here given my past history with the X1.
But I think I've truly, honestly, most definitely learned my lesson now. No more Xbox for me. If nothing else, I don't think I can take this string of bad experiences with the X1 anymore.
For me to be interested in the Scorpio, it now has to almost be a "clean break" from the X1. Most likely it will run on Windows 10 OS. But, the UI, backend system, the overall "experience" of the Scorpio has to be different from the X1 even though it will run all the same games.
For example, downloading updates and digital games was painfully slow for me on on the X1. That's always been my biggest beef with how the console works. Yeah, as I discussed before, I know my internet speed isn't that fast. But my PS4 is tied to that speed, too, but it downloads updates and digital stuff much faster and more efficiently than the X1. The PS4 can even download multiple things at once - the X1 can only do 1.
So, that's more the nature of the X1 and how it operates. And that's something that needs to change in the Scorpio for me to get interested. If the download/install process is still the same as the X1, then the Scorpio is a definite no-no for me.
And in your situation, at this point, I'd now recommend skipping the S and just wait for the Scorpio. If you current X1s are working fine and you are happy with them and you can't get a good trade in deal, I don't think the upgrade in HDR and graphics with the S is worth it, especially as you already have a 4K player and don't need a 2nd 4K player.
It's not like there's a whole host of HDR ready games out now or in the near future. And if your tv is like mine, it may have it's own "color boosting" feature to enhance colors regardless of HDR. My Sony tv has something called "Living Color" which does make the colors more vibrant, and that's a separate setting from the HDR settings.
