From Modern Myth Media:

"The success of the superhero film genre, while inarguable, has felt incomplete. The original superhero and thus the character responsible for the entire concept on which the genre is based, Superman, has not been a part of that success in decades. Along comes “Man of Steel,” a relentless film full of awe-inspiring heroics that finally allows its title character to claim his rightful place at the forefront of the genre, and the audience’s collective imagination."

Was just about to post this. Those guys are hella goofy, but really cool people at the same time. They're into great comic movies. Not just one way of presenting them *cough*Faraci*cough*, and they're into both if the "Big Two".

Link for anyone interested. No spoilers:

RT starts fresh with 7 reviews all positive. 5 or 6 other RTcritics positive - guardian review is lukewarm, 3/5 goes either way on RT probably a rotten.

Good God. :funny:

I remember the absolute s**t show that was last year's Dark Knight Rises RottenTomatoes vigil.

People were going absolutely (forgive me) bats**t that it was probably going to sit at an 87%. . .when an 87% is actually quite exceptional of a score.

Are we going to need a new version of this?

Ahhh, the days of "Snyder is a hack." It wasn't so long ago.

Wow, so Devin didn't completely bash it after all.

So the major criticism seems to be the romance is fairly weak... I'm okay with this.

53 metacritic score. variety and indiewire both negative. 40 on variety and 58 from Indiewire

1 Negative up:

"Instead of making a blockbuster Superman movie, Snyder has turned the Superman narrative into yet another modern day blockbuster." -indieWIRE

I guess a modern day blockbuster is a bad thing? Lol I didn't read the actual review.

40 The humorless tone and relentlessly noisy (visually and sonically) aesthetics leave much to be desired.

indieWIRE
Eric Kohn

58
While certainly the most dazzling Superman movie to hit the big screen, the 143-minute Man of Steel is also the longest, and it only justifies that heft because it leaves room to keep the effects coming.

Grab the pitchforks...

:p

So if it's too funny it's campy, and if it's not funny enough it's humorless. Yeah.

Weren't they the ones that included Man of Steel as an honorable mention in some "Top 20 movies of 2013" or some such list ?

Oh well. :oldrazz:

So if it's too funny it's campy, and if it's not funny enough it's humorless. Yeah.

And many of the reviews dispute each other on the humor, but humor is subjective.

One thing to keep in mind for many critics - nostalgia is hard to overcome. Many likely grew up watching the 1978 film and have a warm place in their hearts for it (and I do get that as I'm the same way), but it may leave them expecting an adaptation of that film with just some modern enhancement - or an adaptation of Superman II. So the big fight scenes might not go over well, like in the indieWire review.

But if the crowds love it and, more importantly, if each of us as individuals love it, then what do the critics matter? You'll listen to your friend/brother/cousin/whatever over any critic anyways and critics are paid to be critical and nitpick a bit.

Personally, I'd think it could ruin your appreciation of film.

Humourless...that's what they called Batman Begins back in the day, and aesthetically dull! I remember people hated that there were no gargoyles or Elfman choir.
