TMOS Reviews Thread - Non Spoiler Review and Discussion - Part 3

This is absurd. Roeper is one of my favorite critics. He gave Fast and Furious 6 a 4.5 and Iron Man 3 a 4/5. I'm at a loss for words. I really think people are reviewing this thing unfairly.

I don't get why people keep going "but this critic gave X movie this rating?"

Critics rate films on an individual basis regardless of genre or what film series it's part of.

I say we just steel some positive reviews from Superman returns and throw them in with Man of Steel... I don't think anyone will notice... :ninja:

Darn it All!... GO AWAY Bryan Singer! stop smiling at us! STOP IT! :cmad: :csad:

The obvious is that the movie isn't being received as well as everyone hoped early on.

Highly debatable how much of that is really indicative of the movie's quality so it's not really a strong possibility. It's still early. Most people haven't seen it and the majority of reviews still haven't come in. It could go either way still.

It could but there's a theme emerging. A theme that frankly I've worried about since day one of Snyder's appointment.

“Man of Steel” is the most ambitious and occasionally the most impressive take on the Superman myth we’ve ever seen, but it falls far short of the bar set by the “Dark Knight” trilogy or even the “Iron Man” troika.

Someday they’ll get it right. Maybe they can even do it without taking us to Krypton and showing us how Superman became Superman.

That is from Roeper...Relax guys, he just is tired of seeing the same story (Zod and Krypton)

I mean come on, not a big deal...It will resonate with general audiences, and that is the key for sure. Next film I am sure we will get Brainiac...Probably no Lex

This is a shame as I usually agree with Roeper :csad:. However, I remember that he did not like Watchmen (which I LOVED :atp:) so maybe he does not care for Zack Snyder's style. And maybe a lot of critics don't :cmad:. I hope the general public loves MOS though. Critics and general audiences sometimes agree, but not always. :yay:

<---I'm not alone :)

I'm fine, Drew McWeeny, Empire and IGN all gave this glowing reviews and I very rarely disagree with them when it comes to films. So chances are good I'll like it, just kinda sucks I probably won't get that sweet franchise validation and bragging rights I so enjoyed with the Dark Knight trilogy.

Can we just PLEASE hit the ground running with the next superhero reboot instead of going back to the origins story and a familiar villain?

^ Yeah. I feel like he wouldn't have liked it, even if it was better.

This movie is still at 70%! That means 7 out of 10 critics approve. That is solid. You guys are acting like it's in the 40's!

Roeper is someone I almost always agree with and he really likes Comic book movies.. He loved Begins, TDK and TDKR he also really enjoyed all 3 Iron Man movies.. The fact that he did not like MOS is a concern.. This is the first time I am worried..

Yeah, but he's objecting to the film based on what he wanted to see, not on whether the film is actually good or not. It's not very objective.

He also says things that there's not enough character development to care about what happens in the action scenes, so it's a little more than that he doesn't want an origin story.

I don't really know about that many American critics so the Roeper review got my attention more than any other this far. Still I don't base my expectations much on reviews, although it can never hurt to go in with lower ones as expectations never help anything.

Fine but it seems that a big issue with him is that it goes over his origin again with Krypton. Is that a problem with you? I doubt hardly anyone here is upset that we are seeing Krypton again.

I love how he complains about Zod being a familiar villain as though a majority of today's moviegoing audience has seen Superman II from back in 1980. And Shannon's Zod is in no way a retread of Terrence Stamp's either.

Oh my God... Thank you! I've been thinking this for awhile now.

I'll be glad when I see the movie so I can gauge whether I agree with the critics or not. The emotional seesaw in this thread is killing me. :funny:

From what I just read, he thought Snyder is talented, and he even used Watchmen as an example of why he is.

Roeper said:
Based on the talented Sndyer’s track record (“300,” “The Watchmen”) and the trailers, “Man of Steel” held the promise of being the richest, darkest, most grown-up version of the Superman story ever put on film.

So you were pessimistic from the start. Okay.

Man....no offense to Snyder and Goyer, I think they're both talented but I couldn't help but to feel a little bit of concern with those two handling the franchise and Nolan not having that much, if any, involvement. I mean Snyder doesn't have THAT good of a track record(when it comes to critics anyway, I loved watchmen) and Goyer is more of a hit or miss type of guy. Just kind of wish the reboot was in the hands of a more......reassuring combination of people.

I'm still looking forward to seeing the movie and I think it's gonna be fantastic, I for one love Snyder's style of filmmaking and I have no doubts I'll enjoy this film, but things like pacing, edits, etc., are things that I've been worrying about since day one and I think the pacing, above all else, might be hurting the thing that's hurting the film. No, I haven't seen it so I know I'm getting too ahead of myself, but when watching the trailers I just had a bad feeling that there was a whole chunk of story in the Man Of Steel that we wouldn't get to see because of the length. I kind of wish Snyder just went 'forget it, I'm making this three hours whether you guys like it or not...'

If you haven't seen the movie stop criticizing the critics who have.

Stop making assumptions about the quality of MoS.

Once you've seen all 3 movies in question then go ahead and give your opinion.

I was eagerly anticipating some action after about an hour and a half of character development. Both of the major action sequences are saved for the last 45 minutes of the movie, and when it does cut loose, it's not one fight transitioning right into another. There's plenty of character moments mixed in.

On a sidenote...is a B- really considered rotten? That's weird.

MOS according to RT is not as good as Thor or Captain America.. Whoa...

Though this beginning is lengthier and richer in detail than most of the Krypton-set scenarios in previous “Superman” endeavors, that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Maybe they can even do it without taking us to Krypton and showing us how Superman became Superman.

Why is he so against Krypton being shown ? :csad:

hmmm, here comes the snyder doubts. last week it was omg, he is God.
