TMOS Reviews Thread - Non Spoiler Review and Discussion - Part 3

Here's the thing, pretty much every other negative review placed the Donnerverse as the benchmark of what a Superman film SHOULD be. The film MIGHT be too dark, but most of the earlier films get downright CAMPY at times. I expected critics to crack down hard because unlike Batman, he didn't have a goofy reboot as a point of comparison. The last film before Batman Begins was Batman and Robin, so critics didn't care as much about bringing to life the Burtonverse as making a good BATMAN film. SR was supposed to reboot Superman, but Singer created a tribute film instead.

And the ironic thing is that if S:TM was made the exact same way today, it would have around 80 percent on the Tomatometer. This isn't a diss on S:TM. S:TM is downright INCREDIBLE considering the fact that it was the first big superhero movie. But now the genre has evolved significantly.

As far as MOS goes, it might be as flawed as they say it is. Or it might be ahead of its time, combining drama, action, and sci-fi into a movie so big that critics don't know exactly how to respond to it. I'll give my thoughts on the movie when I see it, without spoilers of course.

ha ha. good, GOOD. thats what I wanna hear. That Makes me even more hungry.

Yeah, I think the previous movies, L&C, and Smallville already milked the "Clark secretly using his powers" idea completely dry by this point. It's frankly a cheesy device that I don't think we really need to see again.

I look at the reviews from Nordling on Ain't It Cool, and Drew on Hitflix, and I'm just not worried. This is a movie that will, I think, appeal to most fans, and the general audience will enjoy the action. I never thought that mainstream critics would rave about MOS.

Most the negative reviews are 3/5.......
Some positive reviews are 3/5.....

Iron man 3 is at a 78% but the average rating is 6.9/10
Man of Steel is at a 71% but the average rating is 7.3/10

HUH?

5 out of the 10 negatives comes from Top Critics... so, if you looked just at top critics, it's only 44%... not sure what that means?

Top Critics = More critical of the story and character development?

It's over. They blew it.

A lot of the things mentioned in the negative reviews sound like legit concerns, and the fact that the movie is at a 71% after only 35 reviews is not a good sign.

"Huuuur! There's 200 more reviews to go!"

Doesn't matter. Tomatometer's rarely continue to climb through a negative score. It's also a pretty good sample of what it's gonna be once most of the reviews start rolling in. It's looking like they'll be 3-4 bad reviews for every 10 that pops up. So while not a "bad" film, it's still bad given how much is riding on this film for the future of DC films, and because of the insane amount of hype and promotions this film has received. So even if it manages to stay in the 60-75% range, it's still a disappointment.

This will quite possibly affect it's box office intake and MoS probably won't see that huge intake that everyone and WB was hoping for. It may end up being a decent film, but decent is not enough.

So once again, they dropped the ball, and DC will continue to look like the poor man's version of Marvel from the average movie goers eyes. Bravo Zack and Goyer. Bravo.

This RT scoring system is baffling :whatever:

The reviewers themselves decide if their review is fresh/rotten. On the other side, the headline of that review still is that the movie takes some smart chances and then squanders them, which surely isn't something positive.

Over-exaggerating much?

This RT scoring system is baffling :whatever:

From what I have read, it seems that the reviewer assigns a rating (number or grade based) then that same reviewer determines if he feels it is fresh or rotten. The fresh or rotten is not being decided by RT.

I just don't get how a reviewer can give it 3/5 or a B- and then go ahead and consider it rotten. The reviewer should assign a lower rating then if they feel it is rotten.

Man, I think it's time for me to leave this thread till I've seen the film, the negativity is starting to get stifling.

Re-read my post. See the part where I explain it doesn't mean it's bad? It's in the middle of the largest paragraph.

71% is not bad. But it's not good enough for a film like this.

The Blind Side is currently sitting at 66% and that received a best picture nomination.

Stop worrying.

Is it at 74% or 71%? Either way, I'm still holding out hope that it will reach 80% and stabilize around there.

You don't like my opinion? Fine. I'm just being a realist here. If it climbs up to the mid eighties and stays there, i'll eat my own hand.

You got all that from a RT score..
