I'm not familiar with RT. I was wondering if the audience has any say in whether the movie gets a fresh or a rotten score, or is it solely up the the critics?

I will say this much.

I highly HIGHLY doubt it's worse then Returns. Gimme a break on that one.

Avatar received incredibly positive reviews that surely played into its insanely strong WOM. It was an Oscar contender even. MOS isn't even approaching Fast 6 levels of acclaim according to critics.

I remember reading the review and Critics said it lack originality because the story was like Pocahontas. If i recall it was down in the 70 or even 60s before it finish at 83 RT score.

But these critics, some of them still pine for S:TM. Go look at their reviews of SR which was pretty much a tribute to CR and a sequel to that universe. Tell me, how many Marvel films had to compete with their own legacy? This is just an example and not a bashing towards Marvel.

Batman, yet another that had to compete with its own legacy (Batman 89) but that film was followed up with terrible sequels. BUT, Batman didn't have a film like SR before Batman Begins.

With that said, much of the reviews are attributed to complaints such as pacing, lack of character development, and too much action. For a runtime MoS has, the film does go by pretty quick but too much action?? Hah! I only wish it had more action.

Yeah, the legacy is the problem. 75 years and Superman The Movie is the big one, and Man of Steel has to struggle to change the perception of Supes being flawless. There are other versions of Superman in the media (Lois and Clark, Smallville, TAS) that show that the character isn't perfect. Superman Returns did try that (The Kid!), but it was still a nostalgic love letter to S:TM. But audiences didn't take to it.

The deciding factor is not the critics, but us and the public - depending on the quality of the film - if we want a new intreptation of Superman. But in a way, we have decided 7 years ago, since Superman Returns wasn't that popular (Superman doesn't punch!)

Well, that's good to hear. How's the story? Is it really glossed over for action? Or is that an invalid complaint, you think?

IMO, MoS achieves what a lot of films don't and that is balance of story and action. I knew going in that this was going to be about Superman, the origin, etc. The final act has a ton of action, destruction, super fights with OMG moments. The acting is superb as well. Some characters do have less screen time than others but there are some that you don't expect to be in the film as much as they were. I think the story is great and I had no complaints with pacing. The movie is far from perfect and does have its flaws. Can't go into details without spoiling the movie and I'm not one to spoil details to people because I am a box office analyst and am kind of handcuffed when it comes to spoiling movies.

All I can say is you guys really need to see it ASAP. You won't be disappointed and you will feel like you got your money's worth.

That's good to hear. Thanks, man.

Can't believe some of you are monitoring these Critics review as an elections. Go see the movie this weekend and judge it for yourself. If you come out loving it or hate it you'll know where this movie is. Word of mouth is what got Avatar to the highest grossing film all-time.
Groundbreaking special effects got Avatar to be the highest grossing movie of all time.

But you'd be celebrating MOS if it got around a 90 percent fresh. You know you would ;)

Well I'd argue that my anticipation levels would likely reach an epic level of proportions but ill just say for myself that these mixed reviews have done nothing to deter my level of excitement.

The only thing a 90+ score would have done is made me even more hyped.

Which was lead by word of mouth. People telling people you have to see it in Imax 3D. This is why. Plus from those that have seen it... the Action in MOS is something we have never seen done with any action movie...

I've seen it plenty of times before. And done better too. It seems that people are confusing "never seen in a Superman movie before" with "never seen in an action movie before."

MoS action sequences are incredible and groundbreaking if one was to compare it to Avatar.

This is a confusing juxtaposition.

Friday needs to get here so I can see what is causing such a weird split in the film's viewers.

So you have seen the movie?

So you have seen the movie?

Yes. In 3D and 2D. I found the effects to be very poorly done in the larger set pieces. Lacked depth and realism. Felt like video game cut scenes.

What the hell is this guy thinking?
That review was incredibly ignorant, borderline racist.

He's basically complaining, first, that its too dense basically, and then turns and basically catagorizes it as mindless transformers level action flick, but without humour.

So he wants a dumbed down, fun(ny), but smart, not so actiony, Superman movie?

excuse my ignorance, but could u clarify about the movie blog scores on RT ? i imagine those would only come in after wide release ?

SlashFilm, Collider, etc are all movie blogs. Just because it's a blog doesn't mean it's not RT accredited. the term "blog" has changed drastically in the past decade. Seems when people use the word now they are inferring fansites.

Yea it sucks this movie won't get the critical acclaim. That's what I really wanted. I really wanted to see the high scores and accolades along with the commercial success.

The actors spoke so highly of the film like they really believed that they had something special here. I've never kept up with films like I have with this so I don't know how often pre-screen reviews and early reactions can really throw people off.

But itll be very successful nonetheless as an entertaining summer blockbuster and I'm sure they will still move forward with a sequel.

How are you able to watch the movie in two different formats already? Well I'll have to wait until I see it myself to judge.

Rex Reed had a rant on how the budget could have went to help combat cancer.... but with that logic.. you can say that with EVERY movie! :o

I liked how he said "the whole endeavor appears to be the work of grown men who never outgrew puberty." :joker:

Yeah this could very easily get a 'rotten' overall score...

It's going to be close. The worrisome thing is that I know of several negative reviews that are out there, like Richard Roeper's or the Forbes review that have not been counted. Now there will be other positive reviews for sure, but I don't see the ratio of positive to negative changing, if anything it's getting worse.
